    Arjun has been asking me about Spiti ride since the very beginning of the Himalayan riding season. He used to say, Brother just let me know the dates in advance so that I can get the leaves approved. Now being the sincere employees that we are, with two long weekends one after the other 26Sep-3Oct '09 seemed just perfect.
    But then we plan and what actually happens is Life… on 25th Sep, just a day before our ride was supposed to start; I got a call about my Grandmother being ill. She got a stroke ~ high blood pressure and doctors asked her to get hospitalized immediately. With a really heavy heart I called up rest of the 4 guys to inform them. What made me even more miserable was that one after the other they all just cancelled the ride. Spiti isn’t like a weekend ride to Shimla or Mussorie, but rather a major ride that takes lot more effort and planning. In fact Spiti jingle was on my head ever since the beginning of riding season. And as I was needed at my grannys, I so wanted these guys to go for the ride.
    Next day – 26th Sep I went to my hometown Meerut, and got to know the real situation. She was better than what I was told earlier, I took her to a Neuro Specialist and after a complete check up, we were told that there is no need for hospitalization and that she needs rest and medication. Two of my Aunts (Bua) were there so I was assured about my granny’s rest and care.
    It was late afternoon and I called the group if they were still interested to start the ride a day late. And being the great friends and enthusiastic riders that they are, it was decided that we leave from Delhi on Sunday the 27th Sep morning, but being the last day of Navratra’s we could only leave after the morning prayers, so 10 am.

    Earlier as a part of planning for this ride I met OldFox and Vivek, who like the perfect mentors that they are not just poured me in with all the info that I needed but also motivated me even further for this ride.
    Anshul did Chandertaal barely a month ago and as in mid Sep the route was closed for almost a week due to landslides and snow, I called him to find out any contact details to enquire about the current situation of roads there. To my surprise he wished to join us on the ride, I felt privileged, but as Spiti isn’t like a monthly affair, I asked why again now, he said he loved Spiti. And he indeed does, I am sure you can see the same in the teaser pictures below, which I am posting on his behalf...

    I'd rather be riding my motorcycle thinking about God than sitting in church thinking about my motorcycle.
    Ride often, ride well, have fun.

              @B2L: My PC has been giving me grave problems off-late. I am, at present, at a cafe to check out the latest updates to your thread. The pictures look beautiful and the write-up is crisp to go with the flow.

              Now, waiting for the rest to follow, especially, the pictures of the Nako Lake and the places in and around Kaza - specifically Kaurik, Losar, Kunzum.

                  Yup, Anshul does shoot beautiful photographs. And more importantly, he is one of the VERY few people who still use films!

                            Pre-Introduction:

                            I had written this blogpost way back in August.. so here I go again...

                            Am I becoming insane??? This question sprouted in my mind after watching the reactions I have been getting from people off late. I think I would've gotten encouraging reactions had I told them that I am planning to run away from home to become an actor in Bollywood :P.

                            Ever since I returned from the Rishikesh trip this May, I have had this unbearable itch to go on a bike ride. A really long one at that. Next month end I have a ride planned to the virgin (well.. almost) lands of Spiti. If I complete it, it'll be the longest I have ever done and will surely be the best ride of my life. It'll be one of those tales to tell your grand-children kinda things. More on it later and even more on it when I return. (Trip Log Alert!!!)

                            As a part of the preparation (read, making the back-side stronger), I am riding to Lansdowne this weekend. Lansdowne is a small, nondescript place in Uttarakhand, about 300 KMs from Delhi. It'll be the first experience of riding in the hills and also it'll be a test to see how much strain I can take. I know that it'll not even be close to what i'll experience in Himachal but some preparation, nonetheless. Thats all I'll be able to afford before THE trip, thanks to me working on Saturdays. Let me not get into working on saturdays again.

                            So what are my expectations from the Spiti Ride?? Well, let me break it down into Pros and Cons.

                            Pros:

                            * Beautiful Landscapes and Scenery
                            * 2000 KMs of riding - wonder how my bike will fare
                            * A feeling experienced never before
                            * Having great friends for company (Let me tell you, its more fun reuniting with Old buddies in real than on Orkut or Facebook :P )
                            * Time away from the mundane routine life

                            Cons:

                            * 2000 KMs of riding - As much fun as it may sound, it will be taxing and treacherous
                            * AMS - Dont know why but Acute Mountain Sickness worry is there at the back of my mind
                            * No Ride experience whatsover - This wont be much of a worry thanks to the Been-there-done-that company that I have.
                            * How much is too much?? - 2000 KMs in 5-6 days @ ~ 400KMs per day - need I say more??
                            * Toll on the body - this is inevitable

                            Well in such a long ride there are ought to be a few cons, but I would not like to ponder on them now and tackle them as they come. I know there will be more Pros than Cons.. :-)

                            So here's me wishing myself a decent enough preparation and waiting for the last week of September with bated breath. Oh well yes, I need to apply for holidays and they need to get approved too.. That aside I am all set and raring to go!!

                            __________________________________________________ ___________________

                            Well, I wasnt able to complete that Ride to Lansdowne as it started raining cats and dogs and I had to abandon my ride after reaching Meerut and my maximum KMs travelled in one go remained Noida to Manesar (~70Kms). I am surprised and proud of myself that I could accomplish what I set out to and I guess I have directly jumped a few levels of biking (if they exist) in the first shot!!!

                            cheers to the new beginning!!!
