      Day2... Matiana - Nako in 11hrs covering 300kms approx

      Day2

      Monday the 28Sep of 2009
      MatianaNako
11 hrs ride covering 300kms approx

Anshul and ArjunAnshul opened the door and with almost in a pitifully annoyed tone said

Courtyard of HP Rest House at Matiana

Bikes parked at HP Rest House Matiana

At the breakfast table Anshul told us about a Spring water outlet usually called enroute and not very far from Matiana. So we decided to fill up our drinking water from there. I was keeping an eye for this Spring outlet, I was expecting a nice waterfall or something on the likes and after riding for like 5 or so kms Anshul suddenly honked and stopped us all, then we realized that on our left on the previous turn there was a pipe protruding at about 4.5 ft from the ground from the cliff and water was pouring out continuously. None the less water tasted amazingly fresh and sweet, surely worth the effort.
Anshul suggested to turn the engine off and just let the bike roll. Looking at the road conditions and lesser traffic it seemed a nice idea. So we tried a little what I called Free Riding, I kept the ignition switch on so as I could still be able to use the horn and indicators. In this free riding the crux is to use as minimum possible breaks and lean appropriately on turns, so just be able to maintain a good speed on the descend. After a little while it was just Arjun and I in the front, rest of guys were a little behind us. Now Arjun is really great at leaning at corners and he use to overtake me on almost every time I pressed my right foot on breaks even a bit, but fortunately my P200 overtook him on straight lines coz it has a heavier front and better aerodynamics than
      Amazing Roads to Narkanda

      Free Riding

      River Satluj

At the foot of this descend we reached a place called Sainj and started towards Rampur, with river Satluj on our left we went through some almost straight roads in the beautiful green valley, for once we all were doing 100+kmph. We crossed Rampur and halted at Jeori, there is a right from here to go to Sarahan (17kms), due to time crunch we decided to skip it. It was 11:30am and we decided on for an early lunch.

We were told that roads ahead are in really bad shape due to the construction work going on. Which we found out to be worse, it took us almost 4 hrs to cover up a distance of 80kms. It was all full of dust and trucks, dumpers & tractors. And just not in air, there was a thick layer of dust lying on roads too, in fact even at a speed of 20-30kmph I could feel dust flipping on my ankle when front tyre of my P200 was passing through it. We all had our head lights ON and still it was at times difficult to see anyone in the rearview.
Once we had a Maruti800 in front of us. It was Anshul in the front followed by me and then Ankur, so Kartik could see three riders in front of him at that time. While Anshul was trying his best to overtake that Maruti800, I was at his tail to just slip through along with him as soon as he gets a side. Not to mention that car was a nuisance for us for all the dust it was raising. Luckily we got side and all three of us zipped through to go ahead of that dust cloud this car was making. Later Kartik said that for once he was shocked coz he saw three riders behind the car and then for a second a dust cloud and poof all three riders gone.
Wish the troubles would have ended there, now as there are a lot of workers around this area and this dust surely causes a lot of health issues for them, they have deduced a simple solution, they drive trucks (water tankers) with water pouring from all sides onto the roads. But that makes our life tougher coz now we got slush and that made us even slower, with rear tyre running fish tail every now and then. We saw some magnificent earth movers and trucks there. A huge Volvo truck with parabolas, its tyre was much higher than any of us, and at any time all its wheels could turn, I am sure the power they have, they could just climb up anywhere.

We finally made it to Poari at 3:15pm. Porai is the last fuel station enroute Spiti Valley before Kaza. When we reached the fuel station we were told they are out of petrol and that we could get fuel at Peo, which is 7-8kms on left of the main road heading towards Kaza. We tanked up at Peo and stopped at a market place. The first thing ArjunAnkur
The view from Peo was awesome, with peaks of Kinnar Kailash covered in snow visible, straight in front and some small villages just at its foot were looking very beautiful.
      Mighty Kinner Kailash

which are just like Ghata Loops, we got some beautiful roads there and though it was dark, we were able to manage a good speed of 60-65kmph. Though majorly I was concentrating on roads but with the privilege of

Nice read there B2L ... Though its a pity that you rose to Nako in the dark as the ascend from Khab to Nako via the Kaza loops is one of the most scenic rides b/w shimla-kaza... The spiti seems like a very small rivulet from the top! I had spent a good half hour just adorning the mountain beauty, a kilometer before cut-off to nako

Good ride Nonetheless .. Waiting for more..

Wonderful pictures, but ofcourse. Also, reading your triplog in bits and spurs at the moment; I can't help but gawk at a few pictures. Lovely stuff. However, I see you guys didn't visit Kalpa, which is a sin in itself!

Kalpa is REALLY beautiful. The next time WE ride together, I'll make sure we stop over at Kalpa.
