Day 4 : Jispa to Pang

Extremely sorry for the delay. Friends got married, job got more demanding bla bla. We can throw in 'n' number of excuses but it still dosent make up for the patience you guys have shown in us. Only way we can try to make it up to you guys is by jump starting the thread. This time, we are not gonna falter (hopefully !! )

    Day 4 : Jispa to Pang - Part I

Gata Loops mark the ascent to Nakeela Pass. 21 loops form the Gata Loops and is quite a steep climb. The engines would scream for mercy as we take it up in second and sometimes even first gear. Feeling nauseatic or dizzy is perfectly normal in this stretch as the road keeps on twisting and rising at an unbelievable pace. Sudden losses of orientation would also present as a mis-shift in a turn, failure to maintain the riding line as you negotiate a hairpin curve. Although traffic is very sparse at this time of the year, but safety should never be taken for granted. So we would stop every now and then to reorient and acclimatize ourselves, rehydrate with water and glucose and manage to gaze at the scenery at the same time.

The conditions of Lachungla were exactly as expected. Cold and dull. But yes at 17,500 feet, we have now officially crossed the third highest motorable road in the world. And it sure was a heart warming feeling. We were now one step closer to the magical figure of 18,380 feet !!

    Tented accomodation at Jispa

    Thanks for not giving up.

The standard is doing great. Only thing i changed after the trip were the rear brake shoes. Its a great machine that can take up all the abuse you throw at her. Even i am surprised considering the tales of less than average reliability of a bullet.

I can't really comment on the reliability of caesar, as I have not done a long ride yet. But he surely is rock solid. I rode up the purandar fort here in pune, a complete dirt road, and it was effortless, the standard just keeps chugging along, INCREDIBLE!!!. And it is an extremely comfortable bike to ride.

I feel kinda bad about the demise of the sturdy CI engine, but at the same time, I'm happy that I finally own one.

                    Pang(s) of AMS

                    Pang(s) of AMS

Pang, best known as the “vomiting heaven” is situated at over 15,000 feet in one of the most inhospitable terrains in this planet. The high altitude, coupled with low oxygen levels are a perfect recipe for AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). When we were settling down at Pang the lack of oxygen was becoming more and more apparent with every breath. The adrenaline and excitement of the ride soon gave away to an inexplicable tiredness. Leave aside moving around, talking itself proved to be an ordeal. Slowly we would settle down at one corner of the king-sized tent, with all the riding gear (including gloves) and complimenting it with thick heavy blankets. But everything still felt cold. The blankets felt cold, the sweater beneath the jacket felt cold, the socks felt cold – man, it seemed that our blood itself has run cold. And if you are thinking of having a quick smoke to get away from some cold, you are in for a lot of pain. Firstly, the cigarette wont light properly. After wasting quite a sizeable number of matches even if you manage to light it, you will find it extremely difficult to pull. Your lungs are screaming for oxygen and the nicotine laced smoke makes matters even worse. Right after the first couple of puffs, you realize the mistake – you are feeling even more sick. Pretty soon the nausea and the headache hits hard. And then you know that the much feared AMS has hit. Every one gets affected by AMS, protection or no protection. Drugs like Diamox etc only reduces the effects.

We had been taking all the requisite precautions against AMS as per guidelines. Yet we could still feel the pain. Although in a much lesser scale than what others have been facing. But still it was definitely not a comfortable situation. As the night approached, we sat around the central core of the tent which has some stove burning to keep things a little bearable. A quick dinner of rice, daal and omlette later we were escorted to back of the tent where ‘chilled’ mattresses and blankets were waiting for us. I just took off my shoes and nothing else. Riding jacket, gloves even the balaclava – armed to the teeth I must say.

But it didn’t help. At 3 am in the morning I was rudely woken up with a splitting headache and a burning sensation in my nose. It felt as if someone was strangulating me. Complimenting the eery, heavy darkness all around was the wailing winds outside. i groped in the darkness and managed to find the led torch and what a shock it was when I switched it on. The small back room had accommodated 12 people whereas it would have been sufficient for 5-6 people only. And then I realized that my headache and the suffocation was not AMS. what a relief. But I still could not sleep any further. Desperately waiting for the night to get over I kept on tossing and turning on the bed for some more time – felt like ages. I would doze off now and then and again be woken up. The duet continued and finally at around 5:30 am I decided to call it a day.. err.. night and decided to get up and get out. I put on whatever chill-fighting-ammunition we had and stepped out of the tent. As I braced for impact, I was pleasantly surprised that it did not feel that uncomfortable. Infact it felt way better than last afternoon. The fresh morning air seemed to fill my lungs – although I was still having a little difficulty breathing, it seemed my body has acclimatized well with Pang. Gradually Indra and Rahul came out and they looked surprisingly fresh. We had managed to survive our first (and hopefully the last) encounter with AMS.

                    More coming up..
