            • Mumbai to Ladakh route planning

              Hi Guys!

I'm Anish from Mumbai. I own a Yamaha FZ S. My Bike is around 2 yrs old and its in good condition. I'm planning trip to lLadakhin the month of September. I have 3 route options. Here is the link to the map https://goo.gl/G0ZBVh

Which route would be the best considering its my first trip.

Once the route is decided, I would like to plan the route. As in Day 1, Day 2 etc. Therefore, I created a custom map using Google maps. https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?m...A.k_sFgVRCeRZ8

Here I would need help from experienced bikers. You all can edit the map. Once its complete, we can share a view only version with all XBHP members. It will surely help many newbies in future as it would help me now

Looking forward to your kind replies and suggestions.

              Thanks in advance.

6/6 --> Are you staying at Amritsar or not ? In the evening you can go to Wagah border. Note: Leave most of the riding gear at the hotel. Otherwise Golden Temple and Wagah will be a boiler room hell apart from extra checking.

6/7 --> Amritsar - Srinagar --> Start early.. say by 3 am as the taxi traffic from Jammu towards srinagar is a nightmare. Or if you are not planning to go to Wagah then reach Jammu the previous night. You will get hotels just before entrance of Jammu Bypass. (Avoid Samba bypass despite what many might tell you. Its not worth it now unless you have an Impulse and love offroading)

6/8 --> Why keep the buffer. On the previous day be done with the Shikara ride (good after a long day of riding). In the morning visit whatever places you want to visit near by and move towards Sonmarg and Drass. There is not too much to do in srinagar unless you want to savour authentic kashmiri food and visit over crowded gardens.

6/9 --> Depending on what you do --> Do keep atleast an hour for visiting the Drass war memorial. Kargil is a dull boring and slightly unfriendly town. Roads are awesome so I would suggest night stays at Drass/Mulbekh/Lamayuru (my fav! GodFather Beer and the continental cuisine waah waah!)

6/10 --> I believe permits are not needed for the route you plan to do. Just check for the Agham-Shyok route. I am not aware if permits would be needed there.

6/12 --> Diskit to Pangong will be tough. Specially if Agham Shyok is full of water. You need some buffer in hand if you want to take this route. Also, doing Diskit - Leh - Pangong will also take quite a lot of time and is actually pointless. The idea is to enjoy the ride and not reach the destination. Think of staying put somewhere closer to leh in nubra valley or don't reach pangong. Maybe stay put at Tangste.

6/13 --> Ensure that you go till man/merak villages. Too many people just go till spangmik and miss out on the real beauty of Pangong. I will attach a sample of what people miss at the end of the post :-)

6/14--> You could also go through Chushul and reach Changthang instead of retracing on the same road. Note! This requires the chushul permit and is not too easy if China starts having fun early. Last year saw more than above intrusions and many were turned back. Try to get the permit and try to go through that route. If they don't allow, turn back and retrace to Upshi. Won't take more than 6 hours at max. Refer to the team-bhp ultimate guide to research more on this route.

6/16 --> Will be a stretch. Target Pang or leave very early to reach Sarchu. The leh manali stretch should not be done in a rush. Better to enjoy and take in the beauty.

6/17 --> Sarchu to Manali is doable most times unless there is too much snow.

6/18 --> Manali to amritsar doesnt need you to go through shimla. refer google maps. Roads are decent.

6/19--> Check what time bike loading is allowed ?

Overall a decent plan. Ideally I would drop night stay at Nubra and keep the plan a little less cluttered. This will keep some additional buffer in case leh manali stretch is slow progress due to snow (not too likely though)

Oh and here is the link.

No we are not staying at Amritsar. We will be reaching Amritsar at around 6 on the morning of 7th June and leave as soon as possible. Though I have mentioned it in itinerary, I don't think we can visit Golden Temple in the morning and leave for Srinagar and reach before night. We'll skip Golden Temple and Wagha Border and leave for Srinagar as soon as we get ready. Thank you for the Samba bypass info.

Thought of keeping it as buffer as previous days ride would be hectic. We leave Amritsar the previous day at around 8 am I believe so we'll be getting late for Srinagar. Can we start from Srinagar late afternoon and reach Drass? That way we can checkout Dal Lake in the morning and save a day as well.

The picture you have shared is amazing. Won't miss that place. Thank you.

Thinking of the same. Let us land in Leh and then inquire about it.

You are right. If we are able to save a day after Srinagar, We can utilize it here.

What alternate option do you suggest if we skip night stay at Nubra? Getting back to Leh the same day would be hectic I believe.

                    - I have forgotten the name of the place just after crossing Khardung La. You could stay there. Leh - Nubra - Leh is what most taxi drivers do. Its not too hectic. If you leave your stuff at Leh hotel, you just have to leave early and can be back by late evening. Nubra pales in comparison to Changthang and the beauty of the Spangmik to Chushul route (in my opinion). Set your priorities ;-) . Leh to Spangmik is around 5.5 hours leisurely riding.

Mumbai - Ladakh. I have made a route map using Google maps.

                      Route 1:https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?m...A.k_sFgVRCeRZ8

                      Route 2: https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?m...A.kVdOPAm3nFmw

Please do take a look at the map and feel free to correct me. You can also edit the map.

I am looking forward to your replies.
