11th June: Very hectic - assuming you are retracing. In case you are thinking of crossing Rohtang and back - a cannonball ride assuming Kunzum pass is open (which might be an issue)
13th June: Peak of tourist season. Not sure you will like it too much in pahalgam. Push to Aru which is further 15 km ahead. It will be relatively less crowded and much more pretty.
17th June: Do stack up with others. Doing this solo might be very tough if water levels are high.
18th June: Chushul to Loma even with permits are not easy on any given day. Last year the Army turned away many people. We got through since we had a Major riding with us too. Also, half of the ride will be tarmac.
19th June: Fuel availability is there in Sumdo in black. Also in Nyoma I think (not sure though)
22nd June: Cannon Ball run. You might consider anchoring before that (many little places abound with home stays)
23rd June: After all that Ladakh, I doubt you will like the heat of Dharamshala :-)

Buffer days should iron out any delays. Sounds like a lovely plan. Do see if you can accomodate Zanskar too(2 days extra). Also, in case you have already taken the Kargil - Leh route last year, you could take the Batalik Route this year for variety.

    Hope that helps!

I still remember the Chanshal Pass ride. I keep telling my friends about the ride, experience and the beautiful place and the privilege to ride with you. Are you planning Leh this year? if yes, then please let me know if i can tag along (having an experienced rider has its own advantages )
You in touch with Thyagraj and Bipin? How are they?

By the way, i am planning my ride after the Central Police Forces (Assistant Commandant) Exam.

Finally i have 83 earned leaves and 60 half-pay leaves, i will utilize half pay leaves for this trip. I will leave after office on friday and take monday-friday off (5 half pay leaves) + 2x2 (Sat & Sun) = 9 days (you know why i cant expend the trip beyond 9 days ).

are 9 days enough for delhi-leh-delhi trip?

Will be leaving for Chandigarh on friday, 4th June.
4th June - Stay for the night and party with cousin.
5th June - leave for Manali, stay for the day and acclimatize

and from here i will follow your 2014 itinerary.

    P.s.

Anyone interested in these dates is welcome to contact me.
hell, contact me anyways, i can prepone or postpone my dates (conditions applied: dates should not clash with my UPSC Exam).

Yes Sir. Let me know your dates.
    Hi Sukhi

Happy to see your riding plan for Ladakh, it is a bit tight but doable. I know your endurance very well. You can cover a lot in and around Leh once you are there.

I know you have to check your dates for this ride. But I am afraid Manali route might not be open by that time. If all is well, then you can do it in 9 days as planned.

As for myself, I will decided in the nick of time when the Manali route opens and might join you somewhere on the route. But can't say about my plan right now.

All the Best for your ride.

    Hey guys,

We plan on doing the ladakh road trip late July. We come here seeking travel advice. This is our first motorcycling trip in India and we're basically clueless about a few things.

Our flights are booked to Srinagar on 17th July 2015 and we fly out of Srinagar on 4th August 2015.

Since we will not be able to rent bikes from Srinagar, we would be taking a bus to Kargil for an overnight stay and from there-on to Leh.

We have made an initial list of questions which we hope you could help us with.

    1. We intend on renting Royal Enfields, Where do we rent from in Leh? Any trusted establishments?

    2. What gear should we carry? Should we rent any gear?

    3. Physical preperation?

    4. I will be travelling with a girl, who is fully confident of handling the Royal Enfield (Not ridden one before). She happens to be a bit short but has some good experience riding an Avenger. Do you guys think its a good idea?

    5. Should we be wary of flash floods in July?

    6. Will the Srinagar - Leh highway be open in July?

    7. Lastly, we need some help with an itenary. Since we are flying to and from Srinagar we lose a few days. Can you guys suggest a suitable itenary for Leh considering the dates?

    Thanks
Let me take a shot at few of the questions

    1. Lots of renting options all over Leh. Take your pick after checking things thoroughly.
    2. IIRC, they only provide standard helmets. Better to carry your own gear like proper fitting helmet, riding jacket/pants or at-least elbow and knee guards.
    3. General physical fitness is fine. Take things easy initially and let body acclimatize. No heavy running or sudden climbing. Plus SRI - Kargil - Leh is decent for acclimatization.
    4. I personally believe lighter bikes are much better for that terrain and bullets are a liability (bracing for brickbats from bulleteers :-P ). But I have seen the occasional girl handling even BMW Adventure bikes deftly there.
    5. Unless bad luck is really bad, no problems in the region you are going. Floods are more of an issue in himachal and low lying areas. Ladakh doesn't get much rain as it is. Only in 2010 there was a cloud burst which caused havoc.
    6. Yes.
    7. SRI - KAR(try to stop in Drass to take some time out to visit the War memorial - Its an experience like no other) - LEH - NUBRA - LEH - PANGONG - TSO MORIRI - LEH - back to Srinagar. This should be easily doable in the days you have. I would also suggest Hanle if days permit. Check out the multiple resources (maps/relevant links) in 2014 leh planner thread to plan more in detail.
