Slept at 1 to wake up at 4 but woke at 4:30. Started at 5. Tanked up and started driving cautiously until it was dark.
Took first 10 minutebreak at Pune at 7:30 to ask for directions and to have a tea.
Took second 10 minute wada pav break at 10:10 AM at 10 kms. from Tembhurni (326 kms done. approximately)
Third and final break was for beer at 12:50 at Umarga (513 kms. done)
Reached Madinaguda, Hyderabat at 4:00 pm.
Original plan was to drive back on Monday but unfortunately I had to come to the office due to some urgent work. Came by flight. Bike is in Hyderabad.
Would bring at some other weekend

    That's where I stay.

Good... less brakes so 11:30 hours. It took me similar time from Madinaguda, Hyderabad to Powai, Mumbai and return.

Can anyone please tell me the condition of the road from Mumbai to Mahabaleshwar for bike / car use. I am planning to ride/drive over to Mahabaleshwar over the weekend. I have two routes. One is Nasik-Pune-Mahabaleshwar (somehow try to bypass pune), the other being Nasik-Kalyan-Mahabaleshwar(i.e. Bypassing Mumbai). Mapmyindia says that there is 10km difference in both routes. Personally i like the Nasik-Mumbai stretch to the Nasik-Pune stretch (for both bike/car rides). I am completely aware about the Good road from Pune to MAhabaleshwar, but i just wanted to try another route. So, asking. Please reply guyz.

The other route from mumbai is via NH17. The road is mostly single lane. you need to take the right from poladpur and climb the 40km ghat section. Its a narrow road with some bad patches, but its more fun than the pune route and has some pretty good views as you climb up. watch out for speeding ST buses on the corners.

Thanks mate.. made the trip last week.. (By Car)and you were actually spot on about everything in the post. Everyone was so fed up of the traffic on the Nasik-Pune road that we chose this route over Nasik-Pune-Mahab for both to and fro journey. I was so fresh after returning that i even went for a 3 hour Nasik-Saputara-Nasik ride at midnight, returning at 3 (distance travelled 170km) and then had some gr8 food before finally dozing off at home.

P.S.: The road is currently closed due to heavy rainfall / landslides.. lucky me...

Has anyone done Pune-Shirdi by bike. The distance is around 200kms, so seems doable. How are the roads, both by Nagar and Rajgurunagar route?

Help with South/South-west ride from Bangalore

= Mods please let me know if this needs to be moved to its own thread =

                  Hi,
I am planning to meander around on a solo bike trip from Bangalore for 8 days. I do not have a fixed destination. The plan is to head South/South-west from Bangalore and meander along for 4 days; possible hitting the western coast. Sleep where night falls. Ride again in the morning. After 4 days turn around and get back to Bangalore using an alternate route.
This is to be my first multi-day ride.

There are a few things I need help with:

                  • Suggestions on the roads to take. Looking for route where I can enjoy the ride; i.e., good road and picturesque drive. Some options:
                    • Bangalore - Hasan - Mangalore - follow the coast south
                    • Bangalore - Mysore - Waynad - Calicut - follow the coast south
                    • Turn around at Kochi or Kollam or maybe as far as Kanyakumari.
                  • Places to stop by. Anything interesting would help.
                  • Places to avoid
                  • Recommendation for overnight stay.

Bike Help (Reading through the "A Guide on Essentials of a Long Drive". Some questions?) I have a Unicorn with around 20K on it.
                  • Will get it serviced before leaving.
                  • How to tie my bag on the back seat? I have two 36" stretch cords with hooks attached. Do I need special hook holders attached to the bike?
                  • Clutch Wire - need tips on how to change (links/forum threads would be nice)
                  • Front Brake wire - need tips on how to change (links/forum threads would be nice)
                  • Punture Kit (Do I really need this. I don't know how to use it. Does one of those pressurized air cans they sell for cars work for bikes?)
                  • My last long ride was a day trip Yercaud (around 500Km). By the end of the day my bottom was on fire. I have heard that gel seats helps. Is it useful? If yes, where can I buy it in Banaglore and for how much?
                  • What else do I need to take from the bike perspective? Currently the following is on the list - All Papers (Reg, DL, Pollution), toolkit, torch.

Any other tips recommendations would be great.

                      Rishikesh - Lansdowne Route options?

Hi.. I have noticed there are 3 ways of doing the Rishikesh- Lansdowne ride.

                      1. Rishikesh-Haridwar-NH74-Najibabad- Kotdwar- Lansdowne (I have done this partially)
                      2. Rishikesh- Devprayag- Pauri- Lansdowne

                      and the 3rd option-

                      3. Rishikesh - Lansdowne ( as shown in RED in the map below)

What's the best option and how good/bad is the road marked in RED?

If you are a sucker for hills don't miss out on Ooty and Munnar.
Try Blr - Mysore - Wyanad - Calicut - along the coast till Kanyakumari - Kodaikanal / Munnar - Coimbatore - Ooty - Mysore - Bangalore

How you want to plan your trip is upto you. Spend a few days along the beach, spend a few days and nights on the hills.

Don't know which bike you have, but .. as long as it's serviced and all cables are in good state you don't need to carry all cables, or even a puncture kit if you are not in the mood to fix a puncture by yourself.

If you have a lot of space, at max carry one tube.

                          Pack light. Really light.

Gel seats are damn expensive. If you have any cyclist friends ask them.
For a ride like this, space your ride out. Ride only about 250-300 kms and stretch it through the day. Plan on sight seeing without the bike etc. The butt won't hurt as bad.

A friend of mine spent rs.450 odd on a cycle seat in Pune. Given such a small surface area, it could prove expensive for a bike seat .. but do check around if you get lucky ..

Another option would just be to add an inch or more of extra foam over the existing seat. Bike will look a little ugly with a bulged seat, but does save some butt pain..
