As others pointed out, it is still a risk. Request your friends not to run their engines when lubing.

I remember reading a story right here on xBhp about a rider who lost his finger when it was stuck between the sprocket and drive chain. Always turn off the engine and disengage the gear when lubing.

It's a precaution to ensure the safety of the personnel. A running engine means the user has no control over the rotation of the wheel and under certain circumstances, our instinctive/careless reactions can lead to physical damage. Even if the engine is in neutral, there is a minute possibility that the wheels could be under a little power and that is enough to cause damage. When an unpowered wheel means the sprocket teeth can crush the fingers, imagine what a powered sprocket can do. Several mechanics have lost their fingers due to this running engine style operation.

its not that bad as of now. get a old toothbrush and some diesel. and scrub all the chain links well. then wipe it with a cotton rag and let it dry.
once done you can use SAE-90 gear oil else chain lube. repeat every 1000km and lube every 500 km. if you ride in very dusty environment then you can follow the practise more often.


note : DO NOT EVER TRY CLEANING OR LUBING OR ANYTHING ON CHAIN WITH A RUNNING ENGINE. YOU ARE WAITING FOR A DISASTER TO HAPPEN.

use a car jack under the mono shock else one side of swing arm and other side being on side stand. this is just a make shift arrangement and be very cautious.
if you tilt it a lot it might just collapse at the other side.

paddock is a hassle free setup and once in 10 year kinda buy.

I will give diesel a shot, and see how that fares against kerosene. Is it known to cause any damage to the O-rings? And how do you deal with the fumes?

neither Diesel neither kerosene causes any issues with o-rings .
fumes ? after cleaning wipe the chain well with a old cotton rag and let it dry before you put the chain lube.

Diesel is actually much safer than kerosene or WD-40.

i am in the diesel wagon. never bought used wd-40...
try diesel works better than kerosene..

If this little experiment of his is any help, then you can see that apart from using a reputable chain cleaner / lube, kerosene is your best bet. Do not use WD-40, although I have seen guys who swear by it.

I personally clean my chain with a bit of kerosene and an old toothbrush (any trouble here?) and then spray it with TVS TruSpray.

I use diesel, motul chain cleaner and chain lube.

attaching pics of my Thunderbird 350's chain...was not aware of maintaining the chain and it ends up rusted :-( how to bring it back to shape??

Guys, what if the bike doesn't have a center stand? Are there any options apart from buying an external paddock stand?

Don't ever use this way. U will end up with a less finger. Very risky.

I don't think so. There aren't many points on the bike from where you could lift it with a jack.
