Re: K&N Air Filter Queries and Doubts
Is it a wise decision to install a K&N air filter in Hero Hunk??

Re: K&N Air Filter Queries and Doubts
OK so it has a fuel screw. You can tune it yourself.Originally posted by viper008 View Post@gyan_recl350 I think its a kehlin cv carb..
First warm the bike well, go for 2-3 kms of ride and warm up the engine well.
Now with the help of idle screw adjust the idle RPM to the RPM recommended for your bike(take help of tachometer)
Now turning the fuel screw clockwise would lean out the mixture (reduce fuel supply) and turning it anti-clockwise make the mixture rich. Turn the screw 1/4 to 1/2 turns clockwise (close the screw) and see if engine RPM falls or rise:
a. If it falls.
Then start turning the screw anti-clockwise (open the screw) by 1/4 turns slowly and the RPM should rise. Keep turning until the RPM stops to rise. You should reach a point after which RPM would not rise and should become constant and if you open any further the RPM would fall. Stop at this point.
b. If it rises.
Then keep turning clockwise until you reach a point just after which the RPM starts to fall. Stop at this point.
This is the correct number of turns for the fuel screw depending upon if your fuel screw turns happen to be at position mentioned in point a OR B.
Now take long ride, if possible push the bike till WOT and see if it runs smooth and there is no flat spot, or missing or misfiring. If misfiring, flat spot etc are still there then probably time to re-jet the carb as you have gone for a less restrictive air-filter and fuel screw is not enough to get the A/F mixture right.
Do keep us updated

viper008 Oh yes, you can very much tune it yourself. First tell me which carb is there on your bike?

Thanx for the reply.... Also can I tune the carb myself if yes then how, can you throw some light on it...

Ok so here it goes.Originally posted by viper008 View PostHey guys kindly help me out just fitted k&n rc-1060 air filter on my zma but the problem that I am faceing right now is that, when I accelerate on any gear the bike misses out and then gains acceleration.... First try with carburetor tuning. Tune the carburetor properly and see if the issue remains. If the bike is still missing a bit and then collecting again and carb tuning doesn't solve the issue then probably your pilot jet is lean, means it is small and you should go with a bigger size.

Get it jetted asap or risk engine damage

Is upjetting required after fitting k&n rc-1060 on zma...

Re: K&N Air Filter Queries and Doubts
I own a 2014 RE C350.
I am thinking of fitting pipercross universal air filter in it.
AFAIK air filters don't usually decrease the mileage of bike, because it helps to breathe engine more comfortably than stock air filters, and some people hav experianced rise in their mileage.
Can someone clear the confusion whether AF decrease or increase the mileage?

Re: K&N Air Filter Queries and Doubts
Put it anywhere, directly to the carb or in the air-filter box, it will alter the AFR, as it will take more fuel into the engine.Originally posted by jenimu_kanna007 View PostWhat will happen if i fit in air filter box if i done so ..... it will flow air in carb in to the engine ..... or the mod won't work...... RC 1060 or RC1100 ..... ?
Kindly first read all the posts of the thread and then post a query. Many question have been answered perviously in detail.

Though I've lots of my clients who get better mileage after fitting a filter. Mileage will depend more on your riding style & the overall condition of your bike. Whats the point of improving performance if you are going to ride below 60kmph to save fuel?Well yes the mileage has increased by about 2 kmpl, earlier i was getting 38, now my ns gives 40 and sometimes 41.Originally posted by gyan_recl350 View Post
How your mileage has increased can you explain until and unless you are running lean or may be too lean. Now if you are running lean (not idle A/F mixture) then how your power has increased?

The reason for increase in mileage is becoz the engine has to do less work in sucking air, which in case of stock air filter is a comparitively difficult task and hence the suction stroke of the engine now requires less work.(less energy wasted)
This is the reason why engine is more reaponsive.
And yes the sure difference i felt was in the low end of the engine, earlier as per my riding style i had to go 4.5 k rpm + to get good response from engine to suit my riding style, but now the engine has gained decent responsiveness from 3k rpm plus, so that is another reason for the slight increase in fuel efficiency as i can ride at the same speed in higher gears.
Its not just me, Some friends too installed k&n on their bikes and have slightly improved mileage.

1.directly on ns carb, the carb will come out and u ll need a modified holder to support carb (i suffered from this). But i got my mechanic to use specialized rubber strips to give stability to carb instead of a holder. Cheaper and better option
2.directly on carb - air filter tend to get a bit more dust. (not a big issue,u should anyways clean the filter after5k kms)
3.But direct on carb makes engine more responsive
See the increase in air intake is not monstrous. A 250 cc volume will suck more or less the same amount of air, bcoz it cant fit in more than 250 cc of air(ignoring fuel) bcoz its normal air and not compressed air, as we aint talking about turbo-chargers. Same goes for 150 cc engines. But yes the fact is universal air filters should be used in 200 or + cc engines.Originally posted by Team Torque View PostI have a small query here. How can a single universal air filter be a fit for multiple bikes????. Yes I know that IT SAYS UNIVERSAL. But for instance: the 153cc of Yamaha FZ will not share same technical characteristics and output with that of a Unicorn or HUnk or anyother 150cc. Considering that, how do you THE UNIVERSAL FILTER is advantageous???
You are wrong my friend. The afr screw only change the ratio for pilot jet, after 25% of throttle the main jet comes into play and at 40% the pilot jet of the carb completely goes out of the picture.Originally posted by vvk1987 View PostDon't consider any of the above statements while reading the below written explanation
See in carburetor fitted bike you set a particular af ratio by adjusting af screw so this ratio remains same throughout the rpm range of bike whatever may be the environment condition or riding style until you change the af ratio screw settings.

Re: K&N Air Filter Queries and Doubts
Its better to use a foam type filter like uni which doesnt loose its filteration ability like wiremesh filters down the line.Originally posted by abhi7013 View PostPrecisely the reason why i shifted back to stock! You get only little increase in acceleration which is not worth it considering the damage that your engine will have to face..
Another thing is, without properly dialed in jetting and good spark strength and timing increased airflow is useless.
