Now that would be a sneaky round about way of playing the system. Me likeee Please do try it out and let us know the consequences!

If someone with a reserved seat doesn't board the train, that berth will be allotted to another passenger, rendering your seat booking null and void, while on the face of it that doesn't seem to be a problem, there is one thing that could happen.

TTE when doing the rounds doesn't find the registered passenger travelling. Gives the berth to another passenger and at the next station (Change of TTE) the new information is fed into the booking system. When such information is found that passenger is not travelling with his luggage, you have the Anti Terrorism Squad and bomb disposal guys rushing to your package to see why such sneaky plan had been made in the first place. This is of course based on the hypothesis that the duration of the train journey is long enough for the slow sarkaar to figure out that you aren't travelling on the train and your package is therefore unattended. Chances are none of this would happen and you can happily and safely collect your bike at the destination.

But... Sirjee you are IT guy, why save money Just book the bike and make sure agent gets the bike on the train you desire. Problem solved. Just a few extra monies will be involved which is in any case good for the economy

    3. How are charges calculated for #1 & #2 ?

    4. Is there some wait period for which the items are kept at the station, before the discard them OR start charging for the duration of stay ?
    1. AFAIK booking a bike on the train you are travelling happens at that point of time, not in advance. Though not sure of this.
If you are sending only the bike (i.e. you are not travelling on the same train) then you book your bike and the cargo will be shipped on the first available 'empty' train. Of course agents get it loaded onto the train of your choice and your date, but if the luggage van is full, then even they won't be able to load it.

    2. That is playing Russian Roulette. You can, the question is do you want to. Luggage being lost by the Indian Railways is old hat! Getting unloaded at the incorrect station or carried over to the next station is routine work for the Sarkaar. Things like bikes and perishable goods (fish and meat stink if old) are normally better taken care of and thus are less likely to get lost or damaged.

    3. Separately AFAIK. If you are travelling then you get charged less, sent without travelling ticket gets charged more.

    4. 2 days they will keep it for free in their warehouse, after that demurrage will be charged. Demurrage can work out to quite a lot if they so desire! Also Bombay would mean Octroi to be paid as well!

You will be given a booking receipt, the original of which will have to sent to the person collecting the bike in Delhi. He/ she will have to go with the receipt and a photo ID to collect the bike.

Booking amount has to be paid in advance of course.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Transfer bike via train

    Hi,

I am planning to buy a new bike....250 cc upwards like KTM or Ninja.....but then I have plans to move abroad next year. So how can I get my vehicle transported to the other country.

e.g. KTM is lot cheaper in India then US or AUS...so i think its better to tranport the vehicle as I move? But then there are things I might have overlooked so would be glad if anyone has done this or knows about the process can share the information.

If you are travelling by train then your life would be much easier, you have to just book your bike on the train as extra luggage as an extension of your ticket. You need to ensure that your bike is packet well, so that nothing break while transporting.

If you are not travelling by the same train as your bike, then you want to book your bike on a train that starts in Guhawati and ends in Delhi. So that your luggage is not overcarried. Transporting my bike to Bangalore.

Request to Mods: if a thread already exists regarding this type of query, could you be so kind and direct me to it.

Hi Guys,I live in Dehradun Uttarakhand. I am a software engineer and I have a job offer in Bangalore, therefore I am going to shift to Bangalore by the end of March 2015. I have a year old R15, that I wish to take to Bangalore with me. The bike has been registered at Dehradun. What I wanted to know is..

    1. What documents (other than registration) do I have to get from Dehradun RTO (any NOC,or any other document).

    2. What is the best means of transportation (trains or transport trucks or any other).

    3. After reaching Bangalore, what is the procedure to make my bike fully legal of Bangalore roads. ie. registration, road tax, any other tax.

    4. Is it necessary to change the number plate to KN or can I just pay all the taxes, get a paper stating the same and ride with my old registration and number plate.

    5. How much time does it take to get all the formalities done.

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, I read quite a few of the pages in this thread, so I know about the procedure I have to follow. After carefully going through the thread, I have determined that the best way to transport my bike would be to ride it . Also, I will be there for at-least 2-years.
Hence, asking you all to suggest the best route to take to Coimbatore.

Double bubble wrap for headlight, blinkers and tank. Thx amazon.in / flipkart - just preserve the packing materials.

    Card board for seats.

Gunny bag / tarp over everything.

Extra brake and clutch levers (dont blame indian railways)

    Remove mirrors

    And pray to your God.
