A friend wants to move bikes between two terminal stations, so the bike will be loaded from the station where the train starts and unloaded at the terminating station.

My bike has been transported on a train twice as luggage.
Short Answers:
1. The rates depend upon the freight traffic on that particular route.
2. A copy of RC and DL. No other documents required.
3. Zero
4.1 On high freight traffic routes, the brake-van may get full before your bike gets loaded. They then load the bike on the next train. Bad idea if you were planning on taking the bike as luggage.
4.2 They may place objects over the bike(which may or may not cause damage depending upon how well the bike is packed)
4.3 The only remaining packing wala fellow refuses to pack the bike because he is too drunk (happened to me )

@Praful: I had bad experience with GATI. Like you said since they transport by road, they load and unload the bikes quite a lot of times between trucks and motorcycle getting damaged is on a higher chance. Railways are the best bet, but it all depends on luck!

Ok.

For booking your bike onto a train without being travelling with it.

Catch an agent at the station. Get form and fill up. You will need to give the RC and DL copy of whoevers name the bike is in.

Make sure the bike is packed properly. They will give you an option of trains which the bike can be sent on, but you never know which train it will eventually go on. It depends on available luggage space on that particular day.

Courier the receipt to the person who will be collecting the bike at the destination. He will also have to give his ID copy and receipt of booking and collect it from there. Make sure you collect the bike after three days from the time the bike reaches the destination station. Or they will start charging you demmurrage, which can work out to quite a bit.

If you are sending your bike to Bombay, get ready to pay Octroi as well. Also pay little extra but make sure you tick the box in the form for insurance.

When I sent an Activa from Kanpur to Bombay by train (around 1200 km), I paid 2000 odd rupees. But that was last year.

Finally, there is no guarantee that the Indian Railways will not damage your motorcycle, even if their is damage, they will not bother accepting their mistake, forget about compensating.

Agreed, we had tank damage on one our bikes when it returned from Ladakh. And that's what worries me because this an all plastic Duke :-/

Gati, also has equally bad reviews as railways for damage, also they charge almost 3X of railways and to top it off since they are road based transport they take almost a week to 10 days even if the destination is not mainstream.

If you are taking your bike along with you on a valid confirmed ticket, then you will have almost no problem.

You can pack your bike yourself, or you can get it packed at the station by random hangers on. Remember to cover the seat with a sack if you are packing the bike yourself.

Documents needed are ID Proof and ticket at the time of booking and at the time of delivery.

You don't need to give any bribes. Just walk up to the luggage office, take the form, fill it up. Pay the mentioned fee. Expect your change not to be returned and get into your train and forget about your bike.

Stay far away from your bike once the booking is done or else those guys handling your bike will pester you for chai pani!!

Finally, prefer a train which starts at your boarding station.

If I pay road Tax and drive it for 2 years will it be any problem in that(As Bike is on my Brother's Name)?

As I would be going to Delhi and Want to come back with my Beast in Train.
Please Give me some tips on getting it properly from Delhi (NDLS) to HYD(Nampally) as Luggage in Train

Hi people,

i need urgent help over a concern. I am bringing my 220 from bokaro, jharkhand to navi mumbai.
Me and my dad were planning to get it through Indian Railways freight, but then a friend of mine, gave me a piece of his mind and advised against it. His dad, being in railways, he says that bikes are literally thrown here and there. So am scared now.
As for the packers and movers, i talked to a few of them, they are quoting around 4000 for it. Is it the right price for it??
Also, to my disgust, he said that at nakas in Mumbai, Octroi will be charged for bringing in this bike. Is it true?? And if it is, how much would the Octroi amount??

I already have the NOC in my possesion and i am very well planning to get the MH registration done. What actually is bothering me, is the following

1) How do i keep the papers with the movers and packers guys??
2) the octroi rates, as of mumbai, is 5.5% precisely, which would turn out to be 4000 for me, thats seriously a pain to even think of
3) If not by packers, then the railways has its legacy to prove the mishandling of bikes, footpegs bent, fairings cracked or even dents on tank.... i am in no intentions of seeing these, i will kill 'em. The bike has hardly done 5k kms.
4) about the movers and packers, i ahve heard the same about them too, they are not completely reliable, (save few, like i heard about agarwal packers in this regard a lot). So bro i am finally so messed up in this dilemma that i am thinking oh not bringing it, save it over riding it in a damaged state.

I am in such a sorry state man.
Please let me know if you have any other reliable contatcts of packers and movers, and you have known them of good service.

Query2) as far as I know navi mumbai does not have octroi, but please validate it.
Query3) I had transported three of bikes (royal enfield, Kawasaki RTZ and a yamaha) from Bhubaneswar (home town) to Pune (for studies) and back after 4 yrs. by train. The experiences were good. Here is what I did 1) remove the breakable fibre parts and use hay-straw between two layers of gunny bags. 2) Choose the train whose last stop is your destination, my case Pune. 3) make sure it is booked as luggage that means one has to travel in the same train hence the ticket/booking for the vehicle is also Pune, so railway has to unload it there 4) i loaded the bike first into the luggage compartment, so it was at the corner hence moved least during transit for loading and unloading of other luggages. 5) finally after reaching Pune I stood without requesting anyone to unload the bike or showed any kind of eagerness, railway folks unloaded it on there own, without spending any money.
Query4) have to risk it. Either railways or mover & packer.

Unless you are moving for longer time, you need not change to MH. NOC will give you 6 months time to check for yourself. And keep the railway receipt handy at all time to prove those 6 months.

HI Atul, I missed out your post and I would like to share my experience in transporting a scooter from Kacheguda to Bangalore. I hope this could be of help to someone


I had to send honda activa scooter from Kachiguda-KCG(hyderabad) to Bangalore City Junction(SBC).

I took a lot of soft material used for packing and a couple of plastic material ( used to package by movers and packers) and reached the Luggage booking office at 11 in the morning. Took a form and then started filling up the details. The form is not very complicated and there is a form with some reference data written that is pasted on the couter for newbies reference.

I was told that I have to get the scooter packed and one agent/tout/hamali offered to do it for me for 200 rupees. I started from 50 rupees as I had all the necessary packing material etc and the guy was not ready for anything less than100 rupees ( stating that people pay him 100 just to load the vehicles in the train!). I did not bargain hard as I did not want any damage to the vehicle hence 100 was mutually agreed upon. The packing guy asked me if all the petrol was removed ( I replied "yes" even though I left about half a liter in the tank to be used once the bike is received) He finished the packing within 10 minutes and then left immediately after pocketing the money.

I now went to the booking counter and then handed over the filled form
Note: Different people at the counter have a different way of assessing the vehicles weight so check with them if you are not sure with what to fill up as the weight of the vehicle. I simply was asked to note down the weight as written in the RC book/card. I attached a photocopy of the RC card with the form and paid 420 by cash. The value of the bike was declared as 15000( the higher the declared value the higher would be the insurance component in the bill) I was handed the receipt and was told to get the reciept number and some details to be written on the bike packing.

Meanwhile another tout showed up and wrote down the three simple lines which were like

KCG-SBC ( which means Kachiguda to Bangalore city Junction)
12XXX( THE receipt number)
P01(THis is just one parcel)

Now he started asking for money as he was going to load the vehicle( I knew very well that this guy would not go beyond the luggage booking office,but dindt want any scratches from the scum!) so paid him 20 rupees.

All this took about an hours time and I completed all the formalities. I went to see off my sisters in the evening and since I had time on hand, I just made sure by going to the luggage office that the bike has been loaded onto the train. I was assured by the hamalis that they had loaded 4 two wheelers one of which was the one I booked. I thanked them and there ends my part.

My sister picked up the bike the next day afternoon after contacting the booking office. She just showed the receipt and paid 20 rupees to the guy who wheeled the scooter out from the platform to the booking office.
