@drumster: Gati will charge you around 2300 INR for a door to door service. Packaging will eb axtra. Railways will cost you around 1600 INR though you will have to take it to the station which means half a day lost. Packaging will be extra.

    Bike Transport in India

Hi guys, I just wanted to know the approximate charges of transporting a bike from one city to another. For example, transporting a bike from Mumbai to Delhi. If anyone has a rough idea of how much it would cost and who are the people (Railways, Gati, etc.) who do it, it would be much appreciated.

LOL! That was a good one.

Also, I know that when we tour, we have to pay a nominal charge when we enter a State at the Toll Booth, which allows us to be there for a week or so.
So my question is: Does this mean that for any period longer than a week we need to pay road tax?
I am not aware of the exact tenure for which you are allowed to remain in the state. Also every state has a different set rules, eg: some might allow you to remain for 45 days and some 15.

15 days would be the bare minimum for which one should be free of any hassles. But you need to have some sort of proof that can suitably prove your time period of stay in the state. Prolly fuel slips can be used, but who give fuel slips with registration numbers these days!!!

Additionally, you do not have to pay any charge to enter a state in your private vehicle. The toll you pay is for that particular road that you are using, could be the NH or a pvt. road. The toll paid is in no way related to road tax that you are supposed to pay!!

Cops catch coz they want chai money. So they will look for excuses to nail you for some reason or the other. They can even go ahead to the extent of cooking up new rules.

A cop once caught me and told me that we are supposed to pay road tax the moment we enter a state, so I asked him what do I do if I am on a multi state road trip. His answer was that I should pay road tax at every state.

PS: I have'nt paid the road tax and neither am I doing so till the Taxation sturcture is unified and not state centric!
Very true !! Once they stop you, they will not let you till they got some money out of u. They will cook something or the other!!
No offence, but in this regard I found the Bangalore cops the worst.
I've ridden in Kolkatta, Delhi, Cochin and a few other cities as well, but Bangy cops are so irrational and biased. They'll turn a blind eye on a helmet less rider, in persuit of a rich bakra if they smell a chance to pounce on him !!

I remember cupl of years ago, Overdrive had given a booklet with the rules. I used to carry it then. But have lost it now !!

Well cops are insatiable in their desire for some Gandhi's! So they resort to all sorts of creative rules!
