I have a bad memory, so better make it 20k, just for safety's sake, or better, wait for Psr sir's approval.

Yeah , that's the good thing to happen to release the excess oil pressure in the crankcase from overfilling, no harm done . Way better than blowing a gasket .
Yeah and it gets better. Unlike the old models the new ones have a transparent breathertube so it's easier to see whether its pinched or not.

LOl, I know the feeling. The first hint of fear comes when you try to accelerate and the bike doesnt respond.

Are they using too much red dye in it by any chance ? ... unlikely for any oil to remain clean and good beyond 2000 kms in our conditions . Ignore the colour and drop the oil IMHO . Please do report your experience with the Honda 20w40 , I saw the white bottle at my oil shop and am wanting to try it in march .
Will report asap, tomorrow might be a holiday for us, if so then I'll do the oil change tomorrow itself.

yeah go ahead. but keep checking it every 500kms because FS oils have a tendency to evaporate and also carry an extra can of same FS oil for top ups, just in case

Disclaimer: people say FS oils are so good in performance and feeling that you may not want to revert back

        • Went to Honda SVC (Second time, since yesterday they said their working time was up when I went there @ 2PM) asked them for Oil and they gave me a gray bottle containing Honda 10W30 Mineral manufactured by Savita, I asked them for 20W40 and surprisingly he said "We only sell Honda Oils here." then I said bro its the oil grade, then he said its not available and only the current ones were available and used in all bikes.

So decided to let it be and headed to Hero SVC and bought a 10W30 oil and according to the bottle it was manufactured by the same old Tide Water Company and packed on Jan 2012, so hurried back home and did an oil change, and to my surprise the Hero oil was 'Light Golden' in colour and not the usual Red colour. Started up the bike and everything was normal, the acceleration was peppy again and I sure loved it. So now using it, will see in a while whether its good or not. And how come they changed colour all so suddenly, I believe that according to the new colour coding standard Bike Engine oil's(J2MA something) are supposed to be red.

I have a friend who's got his own oil company. And according to him, all oils are neutral in colour and they add the colour so that people wont confuse between different makes like 2T & 4T etc.

              A few instances.

              • A while ago when I used to ride my Kiney the engine oil was always Gold in colour, but recently bought 2T engine oil for my ZMA and surprised to see that it was Green in colour.
              • I remember Psr sir saying sometime back that the Gulf Pride 4T Pride he was using was Golden in colour where as the one's me and Aneesh bro purchased were in Red.
              • (EDIT - One more.) Last time I purchased Hero 10W30 it was Red and now its Light Golden.

My question is, why the sudden change in colour coding???

              • Seems like Pinanki jee said the probable cause of loss in oil level will stick to the way you said during the next oil change.

                TO ALL

My bike is Karizma and it is currently running on 10w 30 oil from HH and planning to change to 20w 40 from gulf. My bike total has 1.2L oil in it and when drained through drain bolt only 900ml comes out. So when I change to 20w 40 do I have to open the clutch cover and drain entire 1.2L oil and fill again or just drain the oil through drain bolt and fill with 900ml 20w 40 and let it mix with the 10w 30 remaining inside the engine? .

No worries, whether 20W40 or 10W30 as long as both are mineral there's no issue in them mixing, I do this all the time(Since I constantly shift between 10W30 and 20W40) and have'nt yet faced any issues what so ever.

And dont you think its safer to keep away from Gulf for a while??? Try Honda 20W40 for a change i.e if its available. Else stick with the same 10W30 oil, cause the Tide Water company made one's are the best as far as my experience tells me.

My question is, why the sudden change in colour coding???
difference between 2t & 4t?? I dont believe that. They sell oil with the packaging right? Why color code?
                    .
Sudden color change that too from red to yellow (or natural) is good i guess (afterall color dont lubricate)
                    .
                    @ vishakh,
dont you tilt your bike while draining oil? I guess you can drain at least 1L.

Why bro? what is wrong with gulf? I haven't faced any problems rather than sluggishness and hard shifts for the first 100 km or so. But later on the shifts are smooth as butter and oil lasts upto 2-2.5k kms.

Thanks for the reply will try Honda showroom. Between I am a bit unpleasant about 10w 30 now. Its purely personal I hate when my bike vibrates at above 70kmph speeds .

Both are true, as many ppl reported behavior of gulf oil differs from one type of bike to another.

Actually I have tried a little tilting during one oil change. Yeah we can drain a little more like you said a total of 1L . And the reason I asked the question is that because different companies may use different base materials to make oil and contents may vary slightly so if we mix oils with two different grades it may be harmful to engine if the oil break downs. Well to be frank I know my bike is not a super bike to care about it this much . But I am always eager to clarify my doubts .

                            • Gulf pride 4T is Golden Yellow, and Gulf Pride 4T plus is cherry red...my thinking is that different colors are added to identify a technology, or temp grade, or application.....just a guess so don't ask me for any clarifications.
The HONDA 20w40 mineral which comes in a white plastic container with Red cap is good..

Yeah , Honda is suddenly shifted to supplying 10w30 (jus like herohonda) at it's services in silver colour bottles of 800ml . Their 20w40 is available at the independent shop in kolkata where I buy my oils however .

You can freely mix all engine oils as long as they are for motorcycles , of all grades and mineral or synthetic . No known incompatibilities between them . So don't worry shifting from one grade to other , no problem .
