  • Re: Engine Oils

I wont put anything in the engine compartment except engine oil.

When I would consider an engine flush:
If I had over delayed an engine oil change interval by something like this -
The normal engine oil change interval is 3000 km for bike and 10,000 km for car. If I 'unintentionally' took the bike to 10,000 km or the car to 20,000 km with one mineral oil (which I dont think would happen) I would opt for an engine flush.

Why this wont happen - 10,000 km on bike is two years. 20,000 km on car is 2 years! I cant live without fresh blood for that long.

Engine flushes can be safely used, I've never had any bad experience with them either in cars or in motorcycles.
My friend had a pulsar which was not used for almost 9 months. We had put 1/2 litre of diesel and idled the bike for 10 minutes and drained the oil.
It was like free flowing TAR. The next day the bike was opened for clutch plate replacement and all the internals were very clean.
Call us idiots, but it worked.
The engine flush products mention that they should be used for less than 3 or 5 minutes and should not be revved or driven.
we once drove Indica with 3M flush for 5 kms to the service station.
Engine failure using flush! I believe our engines and oil filters are not that bad.

Last month I've seen my friend's bike opened up and was astonished to see the amount of sludge in the centrifugal. It was almost the size of a small Dairymilk chocolate. Ofcourse he doesnt take care of the bike well since Oracle sends him offshore atleast 2 times a year.

As a point of fact I've never noticed any advantage of using engine flush on an averagely maintained engine.
I've experimented with cyclo and 3M only, since only these are available at my place. yeah Cyclo sucks.. It just feels like scented kerosene.

If one wants to use engine flush let him use it and after 2 or 3 times, he will stop using it automatically just like me as there will be no advantages. But don't intimidate him with bad consequences because nothing serious can happen.

            I agree 100% with Muztariq.
Instead of using a flush, a cheap mineral oil can be used and drained hot in a short period of time(say for 50-100 kms). I would not risk putting anything in the engine oil which deteriorates its lubricating properties.

            Check these pictures
1.My 8 year old splendor (clutch cover removed to clean centrifugal filter and clutch plates.)(Used in Hyderbad city traffic, drain intreval of 1800-2000kms)

2.My passion's crankcase and piston. (Thoroughly abused with a drain interval of 3,000kms ,95% highway riding)

Similarly,I had opened the oil sump and tappet cover to replace the tappet cover rubber gasket and oil pickup strainer of our Indigo at 1,40,000kms and I found no trace of sludge.

After months of searching for HDEO (Heavy Duty Engine Oil), I managed to find Shell Rimula R3X and Shell Rimula R4. Planning to get either one of these though I'd prefer to try Mobil Delvac. Any thoughts on this? Anyone tried both of them and can give me any infos?

Absolutely spot on Muztariq, well it all dept on ones own discretion. As I've stated before, flushes are meant to be used at really long interviews. Period.

Sandeepfc, check some videos in YouTube where a guy uses diesel engine to flush his car twice and lets the engine run for a combined 1 min and the drain pan is nothing except something similar to what you've mentioned.

But again knowing how to use things has an altogether different perspective on what it does to an engine.

                  Cheers!

Blackthorn'Jee , it's been since the last quite a few posts , I didn't get even half of what you said . Remove the longish thing about the bachelor guy trailing your post . We have read it over and over .
Also my humblemost request to ALL , please do not quote the whole of a previous post in all details and all the pics . We have already read that ... no need to repeat it in total . Just the line important to the context is sufficient to remind us of the topic at hand . All these just junk up the threads , wastes everyone's time , wastes bandwidth and most importantly makes the thread difficult to read and follow . I don't know if anyone would agree with me on this , but this is what I felt .
PLEASE TRIM YOUR POSTS GUYS !!!

So guys, finally changed the engine oil and oil filter today. It was around 2000 km old, but I completed 4 months on it, hence changed.
Used same old Delvac 1300. As preventive maintenance, I did replace the spark plug too. I am a newbee to judge spark plugs. May I request any expert reading this to tell me what does this spark plug tell you about engine health? Its 14000 km old, was using diesel engine oil from last 7-8K kms.

2011 - Thats a very nice oil to have. Dont worry about it. Keep the oil in re-sealed condition under shade and it would be fine for atleast 2 more years.

I envy you - you got that too cheap!

Yes Rs220/L. I was looking for Rimula 4 but can't find it in small packing. One of distributor selling the whole drum and another retailer 15L pack @Rs 4200 (Rs280/L)
