These are just my personal feelings of the engine in my personal riding experiences ,mostly in summers in calcutta , when it is very hot nearly 50C max on road and humidity competes at 95%-99% . Winters are short & sweet .
My riding conditions are pretty bad . I live and work in the very congested southern fringes of Calcutta (jadavpur-tollygunge area) .They dig up roads just for the fun of it around here. I need to move 2-5 kms at a time , through meter-by-meter advancing and stopping traffic , cows , cycle-rickshaws ( hundreds of them ) , auto rickshaws ,bicycles, bazaar right on the street .. veggies poultry fish and all ...(often tread on the stuff with my tire) , then I got to stop roadside ( no one cares about parking here ) and get some work done there and speed off again to next . Think of me as your pizza delivery guy .We got a traffic police force here just last month (yahoo!!) , but they aren't serious yet cause they are too careful about their brand new white uniforms . Upto now we had steep pointy speed-breakers every 20 meters or so doing duty instead of policemen . If you have about ten friends who come to meet at some spot regularly & support the ruling party during elections, you get a speed-breaker there all for yourself .
My usual speed is from 5kmph - 30kmph , mostly in 2nd & third gear ; brake, clutch and shift every 10secs or so . Even then I ( and most riders here ) remove the left rear-view mirror since it keeps knocking down pedestrians or gets stuck in someones bag or saree or umbrella and drags him/her (you can imagine what ensues). Remember to ask me for some pics sometime .
Sometimes I get a "server-down" call from salt-lake area , twice-four-times a week , and get to escape all this on the longer stretch of the EM bypass road where I could open full throttle to 80-90+ kmph and have some fun at last x2 while returning late at night after the server gets fixed . But even that road disintegrates into pebbles & deep-potholes & puddles every long monsoon and traffic is become too bad on it nowadays (they are building a flyover on it now so it's reduced to half width now) . Plus damn the guys who put up a ten-head jerky-jerky-jerky-jerky.... speed-breaker , both ways (up & down) on the only particularly speedy & long stretch there was on it ( Chingrihata to NICCO park ) . Sometimes I wish for quicker server breakdowns . Quite frustrated by all this, last year I've got myself a splendor+ too and I genuinely believe I have taken it to 70kmph last week on this road . I am amazed I still love to ride bikes and have been at it for about 25years now , dunno how much longer I can take it . With all these feelings pent-up within for long , glad that you asked .
In short, consider it severe-service for an engine & it's oil .
I use mineral oils & usually drain an oil in 1500-1700 kms max nowadays , unless I am too burdened otherwise to think about an oil-change .

      • Friends,
My GS 150R has clocked 21k in my odo and i am using Shell engine oils once my gs crossed 6k.

        1) Shell Helix 5w-40 (fully synthetic) was my first , i changed this after 7500 km. Then got to know that it is used for cars.Hence dint try second time
        2) Shell Ultra 10w-40 (Fully synthetic) was my second and i used that for around 15k km (2 times)
Shell gave top notch performance to my bike and now changed to Castrol power 1 racing 1 fully synthetic 15w-50 or 10w-50 (dint check the viscocity) and i drove for 50km.
what i observed is, i dint find the engine smoothness so great ,but gear shift is smooth as usual, may be because of the different brand after long time.

xbHpians in bangalore, in which area i will get all types of 4T synthetic engine oils .Please let me know in your replies.

          • hey msn1,
thanks a lot . Will i get only motul there or other brands too.
my concern is already shell ultra is 750. I am planning to look for a brand which performs decently in between 500 and 600 rs.

I feel Motul is more costlier than Shell Ultra. If you have any idea of any brand, do suggest me please ?

if i wont get , I will settle with Shell.

              Krishna,

in our city environment and riding condition using FS as well as using mineral oil doesn't makes much difference in terms of performance, but makes alot of difference when it comes to cost

buying 1 ltr synthetic oil at 600 rupees and use it for 4000 kms doesnt makes sensible when it comes to using a mineral oil which costs you 220 or 250 bucks and goes good till 2000 kms at-least.

i have used gulf, castrol, shell, elf, motul and most preferably using motul
              its smooth and good

i used only mineral oils and and once tried semi synthetic.

felt mineral oil is fine for GS
My GS150R is 12 k old and doing well with mineral oil

recommending you to go for either motul 20w-40 or gulf

              • hey msn1,
i do lot of touring and this made me to change to synthetic oil.
what you said is right, any mineral oil will do..but now i cant go back man, i tried it once by going back to mineral oil ,but i changed it immediatly as engine was not coping with that.

Hence i will stick to synthetic, but i usually change the shell ultra once in 6500 km and never faced problem.

With the method you've used to break-in that bike , never switch it to mineral or semi-synthetic or trick-synthetic oils(like the Castrol) . You'll have problems if you do . Synthetic oils come in many classes by pedigree & upbringing .Try motul 300v factory-line (double-ester) synthetic oil .

Since you tour often as well , it's not useful to look for a cheaper synthetic for the long run (pun intended) . They cost less mainly because they are derived from the same old mineral oils in some exotic way , retain some of the defects of a mineral oil, and therefore doesn't perform as well as a pure double-ester base synthetic would , for your intended usage .

                    Thanks for your reply.
After i poured in Castrol Power 1 racing synthetic, i went on a short ride of 100+100. Still i am not satisfied with the performance of castrol.
Some times i feel engine is smooth ,but gear shift became tight. After some time vice versa happend. Its wierd .Hence cant make out what is happening.
It seems like I have to go back and pour in shell ultra.

New Castrol Power 1 racing 10w50 is not as good as the old 10w40.
Revert to Shell synthetic, Motul is overrated.
Hey find the distributors of oils; usually one person for one brand for each town/city, you can get great discounts. I got it for Rs.550 from the distributor. whopping discount of Rs200. Also got discount of Rs.150 on ELF synthetic.

                        @pinaki and others...

Today i bought two cans(900ml each as 1 l was not available) of motul 4t plus 20w40(aug 2010 manufacture date). The mrp was 204 and got for 170(180-10coupan). After coming to home just searched for motul 4t plus 20w40 images in xbhp to verify its genunity. What i observed is my can does not have the "HC TECH TECHNOLOGY" at the top front side(as shown in pics uploaded by you in the below given url),instead it has "guaranteed protection --bikes engine, gears and clutch" and"cash coupon behind the side label"(cash coupon)as shown in the pictures attached.
Please have a look at this and let me know if its original or not

sorry for really poor quality pics,as my Nikon cam is not working at this important moment

                        • Sorry bhaiya ... I can't be sure . Firstly I've never seen or known 20w40 motul 3000 4t to be available in 900ml bottle , even if we ignore the HC-tech thing . But mine was the March 2011 lot , yours an earlier Aug 2010 lot.. so it's all possible they were making it like that then , and changed later . Companies do that all the time .You got a very good bargain on the price too , current 1lit bottle is selling for 220 Rs .
Generally I find it a bit unusual just because of the pack volume . All 20w40/20w50 oil I know in the market comes in 1-Lit packs , which is the traditional size for motorcycle oil-pack here . All 10w30 I know of comes in 900ml .. cause they are targeted towards HeroHonda bikes and herohonda's own oil is in 900ml pack . Some Honda-genuine oils come in 800ml packs , an exception I know of .
So the best thing for you to do is call up the motul official (like I did once) and confirm with him if the shop you bought it from is authorised/supplied by them . There is a list somewhere on this forum "motul distributors" whereby you can find your local motul official's name & number . Try this .
If in doubt , return it .. go to your nearest Yamaha ASC and buy 20w40 yamalube SG or SL from their parts counter . That's motul oil and no headaches about genuineness too .

Edit : just saw this website Motul , by which the motul 3000 4T plus 20w40 is also available in 900ml packs. So the bottles you got looks ok by me now .

I have to get my CBR 1 service done at 650KM
I am looking for good engine oil during run in.

                            1. If i go for Mineral oil at 650 KM, when should i replace oil again (owners manual says it will end another 5000KM )
                            2. Is 20W40 is best for Bangalore?
                            3. Will GULF mineral oil be the best for CBR? or what else will be better??

                              • Help me with synthetic oil

Mine is a Honda Dazzler, I have done a 10K kms. This is wat i experienced. It gave a mileage of 55-61 Kmpl (city 50% and suburban 50% condition, Daily Avg 70 kms). Installed iridium spark plug (5% mileage increase).
then i ripped the engine a bit and it dropped likewise 50, 47, 43 Kmpl stuck der.
Then i thought iridium plugs are messin with me n it was black soot covered always.
I asked honda guys, on my 9K Kms service, to tune the carb to stock setting N reported low mileage
As soon as i got back from service, i filled it wit Shell Ultra fully syn. Engine became smoother than ever

From then on in typical city traffic (Chennai), easy on d throttle (56-63 kmph) I gotta whooping 63.5 Kmpl

I think The iridium and syn combo in my Dazzler is doing wonders (Avg 58 Kmpl)

                                And now my query?
What is Shell Ultra fully synthetic drain period? some say 6500 kms?

Is tat Gulf Pride with 10K drain period fully syn? available in Chennai? As good as Shell Ultra full syn ?
