  • Need Help in deciding for a helmet

Hi All ... This has been on my thought of going for a new full face helmet. But the issue that I am facing is that other than the bigges from likes of Arai, Shoei, Nolan, AGV there are a lot others as well ... And I absolutely have no idea about how good they are as far as protection and comfort are concerned. I am referring to names like : Shark, HJC, Sumoy, Bell, Icon, Scorpion or KBC.
We probably find most of then in India but since I am in US currently, I want to get one from here as huge options are available. But I prior go for any one make or model, I would like to know if anyone has owned or has helmets made frm the second lists. I have a few friends who own Shark and KBC. But I m more keen to know about Icon, Bell, or Scorpion. They are relatively cheap and have lots of variety as well. But are they good enf to own one as primary helmet.

Mods : Please merge this with any existing thread if any.

    Thanks

I have only dropped the helmet once and that was the 2nd day after I bought it and it escaped with just a hint of a scratch.
Collisions with the pillion helmet a few times almost negligible.
That's it. Feel a bit let down here. It comes with an year's warranty. I'll talk with AH helmets about it

The ABS (plastic) air intake and exhaust vents that are fixed onto the top of the helmet shell form a (for lack of a better word) "superstructure" which are fixed onto the base shell. Under ECE and DOT regulations, there cannot be any protrusions from the helmet beyond a certain point in the basic shell shape of the helmet. Therefore external venting systems in certified helmets are designed to shear off in the event of a crash to prevent the helmet from snagging on any surface and therefore jerking the head in different directions, potentially causing injuries.

If you have dropped your helmet, and the part has been damaged or come loose, then the product has done the job it was designed to do.

My regular riding buddy, Ravi has an Arai Chaser V whose visor side plate cover snapped off when the helmet rolled off his bike seat when he carelessly put it there at a pit stop. Maybe a two and a half foot drop but it still broke off. I have a NEXX Diablo carbon-fibre whose mouth vent snapped off when I clunked the helmet against the rider in a hard braking situation (I was pillion).

The good news is that these things which have not damaged the basic helmet can be fixed. Spares of these components are available and I suggest you write into the contact-centre of the company for assistance, clearly specifying your helmet model, colour and size. The helmet having being dropped would not qualify for warranty, but you can get your helmet fixed.

Anyone having the same ? How good is it ? I mean at 1650INR it looks pretty good deal. Does it come with removable inner lining ?
Yes, Studds Scorpion does have removable lining.

Any of the helmets that you buy in the USA would have to be DOT approved. That means that they already conform to a specific safety standard. Since your basic concern of safety has been taken care of, the choice will simply depend on your taste, fit, and depth of your wallet!

                      • Bought Studds rhyno for Rs1200 last week. My primary concerns were low wind noise and budget. For this price it's a good buy. The sad part is that most of the models are available only in L size (in Ernakulam). They dont keep other size like M.

                        • Which is the best helmet i can get in a range of Rs.2000-2500? I was looking at Studds range which are around Rs.1600 bucks MRP but if better options are available then please suggest.

But please note cannot go above the said budget of Rs.2500.

@akshay - you can purchase through the webpage already - hundreds of helmets have been delivered all over the country in areas not covered by resellers. Simply write into the contact centre with your requirement and they will guide you. Bank transfer is preferred so as to avoid the 7.5% transaction fee of cc's.

The Spartan ProGear website is almost done - but you can get a glimpse of the FB page in the meantime.
