Yeah, it does take a lot of rain to get water inside, but the problem is, being a lace-up type (albeit having no openings) continues (read hours at a stretch) splashing of water causes water to seep inside and accumulate...

Being from HD, I believe they must be reasonably waterproof, but yeah test and post your experience...

I agree with you - in my observation, no lace-type boot can be truly waterproof, unless the tongue-flap is sealed and even then, its integrity is not always 100%. Another point of water entry is from the top of the boot - from water running down the leg, if the pants are tucked in.

Oh - and by the way, HD doesn't actually make any gear. All their gear is out-sourced from factories around the world and simply branded. This merchandising though accounts for roughly 10% of their revenue stream!

The standard for your reference after all the surcharges and additional surcharges, etc., are added up is approx 30% of ( invoice + freight and insurance cost ).

Unfortunately, the way the system works is still pretty much haphazard and much still depends on the whims and fancies of the Customs Officer on duty at that time.

Heaven help you if he's in a crabby mood!

I recently had my leathers held up as it was marked as a 'gift' with a very small invoice value. Customs held it up for a week while DHL got me to write a letter to the Supdt. of Customs explaining that it was for personal safety use, gifted to me by my cousin abroad - got slapped with just Rs.2500 as duty. My touring boots which came through another source two days later got slapped with approx 28% on invoice value.
        Sunny,

Thanks for the clarification. Im still having trouble understanding whats happening though. As per Satyen's post, duty free gifts are valid for orders below 25k now. Earlier it used to be Rs 10 k / $ 250 which is what riders discount has also told us. We got an order shipped without any hassles from RD and it was below the $250 limit. If it is 25k now (or even 10k earlier), why was duty charged on the helmet which cost 9k? Was it because the customs officials refused to treat it as a gift?

Sunny, Im assuming your orders for the leathers and touring boots were not through RD and from other websites where they do not take care of all inclusive shipping, right?

        • Hey guys i recently ordered some gears worth 12k from riders discount and it was delivered without any hassles in my home town goa. Also i would advice you all that dont order shift jackets as the armor what they use is for dirt track where if you take crash at speeds of 40 its ok, but on high speeds it doesnt give you protection advantage.

I ordered one and now i have to use my old DSG Falcon guards in the shift backdraft jacket as they are really good.

            Thanks SHRINATH,

Though I am already using SHIFT Racing Jacket bought a month ago but never knew this fact.
Mine one is Shift Racing Triton Storm Series Jacket - Street Bike - Motorcycle Superstore
Honestly it is my ever Riding Jacket so theoretically not aware of this nick picks.

But what is the scale or measure of knowing this.
Is something written to understand in other jackets?

Exactly the point! It's not because customs officials refuse it as a gift from abroad but because they are no more sent as gifts now.As per the RD sales guy, they now send an invoice along with shipped-box where every detail about the purchase is mentioned. The customs officer then decides how much duty fee is to be slapped on it.

                  • Rjays Rainwear reviews?

Has anyone here tried Rjays rainwear (jacket+pants)? I am looking for reviews. Has it left you bone dry after a torrential downpour?

i am going to purchase it tommorrow, most probably, i have seen it when i went there, last time, it is just like a simple raincoat, only difference is tape welding of joints is much better than normal raincoats, material is somewhat like some synthetic material, very similar to our indian raincoats but more reliable, there is no inner linning, have elastics at ankle and wrists, velcro over zip in jacket.

                      zulfi is himself using one.

i think it is perfectly waterproof. only place water can seep in is through jacket zipper, but it can be avoided by some ingenuinity.

overall much better than indian raincoats.

                          • @ Neil - The RD question was already answered a few posts back. They do not ship as gifts any more. My gear was custom from the manufacturer, so it came with proper invoices and hence the duty.

The point I'm trying to make is that you need to be prepared for duty - depending on the Customs official who checks your package. Sometimes you will get off easy and sometimes, you'll get scr##ed.
