    • i have a PCI slot... so PCI-e graphic card..

and what are the advantages of DDR3 over DDR2 graphic cards?

AFAIK..DDr3 is bit faster than DDr2 ..they re priced extremely high compared to DDR2...this is not justified ..so what to choose?

i searched ebay , 512MB DDr2 were available within that price

      see that,

and whatz PALIT? is it nvidia associated or Chinese brand?

sorry for the noob question, itz been a long time since i had a grip on these almost 3-4 yrs with my old mobo

        i can tell u differences that i know between DDR2 and DDR3

basically what happens is that for e.g you might get 2 graphics card's of 256MB memory, and you find one of them to be faster than the other. now the question arises why??(as both of them are 256MB then how one of them can be faster),, itz because one of the graphics card (faster one) has faster memory processing unit than the other one, therefore one graphics card of 256MB is slower than the other due to slow processing speed.. and this is where the dfference lies between DDR2 and DDR3 , DDR3 has faster processing speed than DDR2 therefore graphics card manufacture's take advantage of this difference and price DDR3 heavily

so the bottom line is "memory of two cards may be same but their processing speeds varies which makes one superior over other"

no no!! PALIT is not a chinese brand , it manufactures graphics card chipsets for NVIDIA,ATI and look at itz website for more information Palit Microsystems

lol..that is what i said drr3 is "faster" than ddr2,but u explained in technical terms
the performance depends on many other rfactors like memory bandwidth, texture fill rate ..etc etc

aneways thx for the info, but u dint mention which card to choose..
          have u seen that link?

have a look at this this palit 9400GT PCi graphic card for 2600rs

          this also

u can see a wide range of XFX graphic cards available in or around 2500~2600

          but all r DDr2's .. what do u suggest?

It is not just about the memory. Rather, the memory would be a small factor in performance. The older cards used DDR2. Newer cards come with DDR3, and that's just for NV. ATI is using DDR5, and they don't price cards too expensive.

The GPU or the processor on the graphic card is the most important performance-wise. If you want to play games you should look out for the fastest graphics processor. This will (in most cases) coincide with modern tech and thus with DDR3.

Based on your budget, see the 9XXX series from Nvidia or the 4XXX series from ATI. In either series, try and get the highest model number possible in the budget. Around 3K means 9500GT or HD 4650. At this price point 1 GB and 512 MB versions will not have too much of an impact, so if there is a significant price difference take the 512 version. Also remember there are DDR2 and DDR3 versions for the same card sometimes.

Also, see your local PC market. Ebay is not too great with the warranties part.

thx very much for the reply, clarified my doubt

yes i will check with local shops, ebay is just for price listing
based on my budget i can see ATI HD 4350 as a possiblity and NVIDIA 9400GT

HD4560 is priced way to high around 4k ..and 9500GT is price around 3.5k ..anything l<=3k is good for me
i know that both ATI and nV are good, both have their positive and negatives in some games..
iam not a hard core gamer, just need enough memory to pull it off, idont play at high graphic details
so which one to go NV or ATI..are ATI's reliable?

there is another problem...i have a pretty old Mobo ASUS m2npv-vm bought some 4 years ago..came with a buiilt-in NV 6350 128mb garphic card..
now if i want to install new garphic card, ishould disable NV6350 isn't it?
but i dunno how to disable it.. as its builtin
plz help me with this issue also \
              thx in advace

i am using nvidia 256MB card and i can play games that needs medium graphics a decent speeds but when i tried to play GTA4 i was shocked to see that it was not even able to handle the graphics quality of the game,i know that gta is a modern game but my nvidia card totally banged ..
but it played well with crysis, prince of persia, ...
so in budget of 3000 u cannot expect much but still some of the best options are:

                NVIDIA GeForce 9400GT 512MB DDR2
                ATI Radeon4670

from above ATI has a better GPU, so is a bit better than nvidia...
but i have not seen people running ATI's, so cannot say much about it ,, but nvidia have good availability & greater range of models in INDIA and therefore are preffered here more...

                about your disabling problem::

i too had a onboard graphics ca.. and later on i shifted to nvidia 128MB and then nvidia 256MB(currently), you will have to disable the onboard card first turn ON your computer and press F2 or delete key to get into the BIOS setup menu, after that disable the onboard video card option, save settings, restart and dhan te nan you are ready for your external graphics card ..

                enjoy!

For the first, either of the two brands are good. Nothing like a difference in reliability. But there will be differences in performance (slight, and will vary from game to game). The selection part is up to you.

As for the disabling, you really don't need to do anything. Install the card and connect the monitor to it. Everything works automatically. You can disable it in the BIOS as suggested if you want to. Won't make a difference.

                  EDIT : 200th post YAY!

BTW the 8800... is a 512MB graphics card, 512MB represents itz aperture size but in actual only 50%(decrease with increase in A.S.) of the aperture size is used i.e. 256MB(if ur card is a 512MB one),, that was what i was trying to explain... and thus i said it tobe 256MB one....

Your graphic card will have a VGA output on its back plate and this will be seen on the case's back panel. It looks identical to the onboard video output port you have. Connect the monitor to the card's port.
