This was something that i was contemplating as well. My 2 year old R15 ( indo engine ), has done about 11,000 or so kms only. And now it will be used for commuting to and from work atleast 5 times a week. ( 52 kms round trip ). With my wife.

Now the R15 is one hot piece when you are riding solo. But with two up, it dies and becomes a normal 150cc commuter. Yes you can still hit 120+ kmph, but it takes ages.

I was/am in the same dilemma. To go for the full blown Joel'ed spec bike, with bigger bore, ECU, Cams, springs, exhaust, intake etc. Or sell the R15, add some money and buy the CBR 250.

After riding the Ninja 250 i do have the following points.

          - The extra power will give it more grunt for the additional passenger ( need info on comparo with a modded R15 ).
          - The dimension of the bike, makes it more stable ( the bigger cbr250 ) with two onboard
          - The seat is more comfortable ( 250 )
          - Better braking/stability under braking

Note - My arguments/points are primarily with regards to the purpose of riding 2 up and not solo.

I recently tested the CBR 250 once more and this time it was on a long highway. The bike feels extremely stable and really built for touring.

The power band is right from scratch to redline, but the fun factor is much much less when compared to an R15.

Though the chassis is designed diplomatically, it become almost impossible to flick the city traffic and with a Pillion on-board the bike resembles a Thunderbird, you have power but scared to use it.

Since you are married and a responsible man, I would suggest you to visit the Honda showroom,

I have done some touch ups to my Joel'd R15 to make it vibe free and yes I happy to say I have succeeded in making my bike much smoother than a brand new R15 with almost 0% engine braking even at 2-3 gears.

I will share it in detail very soon.

Right from bore/piston coating till exhaust porting everything is complete, last set of works help up with the Clutch bell, coz thats the irritating factor while idling.

Probably in this weekend all works will be complete and I will give a nice detailed review will pics and videos.

Thanks for the input Harish... i have swung my t-bird with my wife ( then girlfriend ) for many months in traffic, and on the ninja also it was pretty okay. The R15 was different ball game to be honest, its awesome with one rider, but with two the geometry is just not right, maybe coz its not supposed to be enjoyed two up. Any inputs on two up stability???

You are correct, the R15 is not designed for a Ride with Pillion, offcourse you can accompany one, but you cannot expect the bike to perform, handle and brake the same way when you do it alone.

So my suggestion would be the CBR, Joel'd R15 will be slightly better when compared to stock with a Pillion, but still its a 165CC and it will not have enough torque to pull a couple.

But nothing beats the feel you get on a R15 with you alone in it.

                    Now its your call.

Interesting thread though, R15 is undoubtedly the best in terms of agility, handling, sharp cornering, etc. But it really denies to pull when with a pillion. I had my R15 and now a ceeber. Ceeber can flick around corners close to R15 which a lot depends upon the skill but R15 is more genial.

When I test drove ceeber, I only felt it like a bigger R15. Power package is not bad at all. Who does above 140km/hr every day after all?

I have done 139km/hr with a pillion on my ceeber and it was real stable and not roaring at all. For touring, yes CBR is the best bet but for fun and extreme cornering , its R15 for sure. But it is only you who would have the fun, not your pillion or GFs.

+1 to the statement made by Pravu. CBR is a born tourer and has a linear power curve all towards the redline till the rev limiter kicks in.

                        However, i would say if anyone has a real thirst for speed and also wants the cornering capabilities of R15 but doesnot want to spend above 1 lac;
the simplest way to achieve that would be getting hold of a good 2nd hand R15 say around 65k, get the whole power up kit done from Joel and also replace inlet, exhaust valves and other parts to rebuild the engine to the new condition like mentioned at Abhimanyu31's R165 thread(All costs mentioned on his thread as well).

The result: A mean 'Pocket Rocket' which can literally outgun bigger boys and at the same time provide unbelievable FE figures based on the tune up done for the rider. In that true sense Joel has provided us something which was non-existent to the indian riders before.

So in terms of price point a souped up R15 makes sense. In terms of a bike for touring purpose, if one has the cash = CBR makes sense.

                        My two cents.

                        Cheers

I would say the CBR's riding position is strange, the same feeling you got the 1st time in your R15.

The handles are not as short as R15, it gives a kind of ZMRish Feel, but still I was leaning well to take a comfortable position, not as I do in R15. May be somewhere between an RTR and R15.

I guess, you need to lean almost the same amount, but the foot pegs are not as far back as the R15. This is what I felt by looking at the CBR at the signals.

So, should be slightly more comfy! But not as upright as the ZMA.
