  • An RD350 from the '80s for 12k - what say?

There's this doodhwala (milkman) 2 blocks away who rides a 350. Its run on kerosene (yes, you heard that right) and when asked about its last sevicing he replied, "What servicing?"
On detailing further he said he himself applied grease on "whatever sounded rough" which included on the cluth lever, gear level and the wheel axles.
The rear mud guard and the front are half existent. The other half's been chipped off bit by bit due to rust. The bike can be heard from a mile away.
    Indicators, what indicators?
The seats torn, the paint has faded. Tank has umpty scatches.
Overall the bike's like a dying horse.
The doodhwaala is getting the new Bajaj Boxer 150. Dont want this baby to go into the hands of a scrapdealer as what he claims he'll do.
When asked how he wanted for the bike, he quoted 12k.

I wont be able to afford the spares and parts for the rebuilding for atleast another 6 months. What do you guys suggest?
Also the bike is RJ (Rajasthan registered) and he'll have to dig up someone's grave for the Registration papers.

        .
So, it boils down to two things...
        1. You're a passionate (really mean, really really mean passionate)
        2. You intent to become or use it like another milkman

For #2, no obvious reasons required, just go ahead, negotiate with him & you might get a best deal

For #1, no say, as passion, love etc does not have its limit, simply go ahead & buy it

PS - Did I forget to say, Love hurts, tests your patience & sometimes leaves you bankrupt ?

Nowadays, you don't even get barrels for that price.

Oppurtunity does not come knocking twice my friend.

+ Pick it up for 10K
+ open her up work out a rough estimate to resore it
+ If its within your budget, set the documentation correct and proceed
+ If your pockets ain't so deep, you won't have trouble selling it for a handsome sum of money

But I really am a total novice when it comes to opening an engine. Will need the svc for that.

i would say rather leave it unless you want a rd badly.
and the question remains why do i race?
every finishing line is the begining of a new race.

#i have learnt to manipulate my own adrenaline and the perception of biking is different.
                #overkill is underrated.
#how random roads may appear there is always a destination.sigpic
#i don't subscribe to co-incidence,either it is the rider or the other moron on the road

(:)people keeps on saying add spark to life, bajaj got hold of that idea and added an extra spark to bike.

I would say pick it up my friend. The RD350 is a legend and for 10-12K you won't lose much even if you don't plan to work upon it. Rather it may fetch you more money while selling than what you will spend while buying it. Fully restored RD350's in Bangalore are going for 2 to 2.5 lakhs. And elsewhere for around 1.5-2 lakhs. So I would say better take the plunge. Not many get this oppurtunity. I would have been blessed to get such a chance to fulfil my boyhood dreams. Get the RD my friend !!

An RD is not a bike, it's a legend. I'd strongly suggest you go for it. Where is this bike located?

But be prepared for problems later because quite obviously, this bike has taken a lot of abuse. Be prepared to shell out a decent sum on getting her restored.

So do the simple thing. Negotiate hard and get it slightly under 10k. Spend what you saved in getting the bike restored. She'll be an amazing companion, given you're obviously passionate about motorcycles.

I'd say buy it, restore it (this should cost you 20k-30k) and sell it (for 1.5lakhs-2lakhs maybe). Damn! Making money was never so easy.

Buy it! 12k is nothing actually. You may have to shell about 20-40k for parts and repair. A fully restored bike fetches not just value, but when you ride it ppl will look at you! I guess the papers can be redone if you have the registration number atleast, you may have to shell a bit and go around at the RTO but then the bikes worth it.

There are no short-cuts to any place worth going. So ride safe when you are treading uncharted roads.

My honest advise is to stay away from this RD350. Parts are extinct. You might have end up ordering parts from ebay or abroad. Giving an idea to restore it completely and making money is nice to hear. I don't want you to come back stating the pain in getting the bike restored. Well, the cost that you would end up is not anywhere near 40k for sure. But bomb!

What you need to have if you still want to go ahead:-

                              1. First you should know about RD.
                              2. Need to have good contacts for parts.
                              2. Money.
                              3. Eye for detail.
                              4. Sleepless nights.
                              5. No heart related problems.
