  • Confusion regarding purchase of my first motorbike.

Hello mates, My name is Omkar and this is the first time I am posting in xBHP so excuse me for any mistakes. So here is my story.
I completed 18 years of age about 6 months ago, and in these months I have practiced motorcycle riding on a Yamaha FZS since I wasn't knowing how to ride a motorcycle. I applied for my motorcycle license and finally I've got it. Now the time has come for purchasing a new motorbike and I am totally confused between Pulsar 200 NS and KTM Duke 200.
My height is 5'6 and weight is about 48 KGs. Average is not much of a problem since right now I own a TVS Scooty Pep+ which returns a mileage of 25 KM PL (She is five years old though); but average should be at least 35 KM PL or better. Most of my riding is going to be in city, commuting from my flat to my college and classes (About 25 km).
Once a month I'll be visiting home (Mumbai) from Pune and occasional weekend touring with my pals. Comfort level is the main factor since even though I will be running from Pune to Mumbai then back to Mumbai once or max twice a month, I'll be carrying bags with me.
So all my expert friends, after analyzing the given parameters kindly suggest me motorbike perfect for me.

Also I would like to get some depth knowledge of why lowering saddle height of a motorbike is not a good idea.
    Thank you!! Cheers!!
I stopped checking for monsters under my bed when I realized they were inside me.

Pep with 25 kmpl?Man thats weird.
I wanted to get 200ns but was put off by its saddle height.I am 5'7 and 65kg.
You must be really comfortable with the bike you get and thats a must.If duke suits you...then get it.

If you really want an expert's advice, then, you can discard my post

        1. Dig out for old posts in xBhp to learn about braking, good riding skills, riding in different weather conditions & most importantly, what a motorcycle is all about. Learn differences between 4S & 2S, timing, carb tuning, ECM, FI, Cams, engine oils, clutch mechanisms & all those essential techs.
        2. There's no perfect motorcycle that is manufactured for anyone till date. Everyone has learned to live with close to perfectness or what they buy
        3. One can improve riding skills even with Scooty Pep or TVS 50, not necessarily with FZ1, S1000RR or GS1200; so keep riding your Pep for sometime. Until then, save your Dad's money (I assume since you study at College, your Father has to finance for your vehicle) & keep enhancing your skills.
        4. You'll know when you're ready for next vehicle, by then, you might be in a new job too. Check again, if your interest still align with motorcycling & then buy that "perfect" motorcycle that you're looking for. May be there're better models available at even rock bottom prices.

        Good luck

Skill is what keeps you on a Motorcycle
Awareness + Skill is what keeps you out of harm's way
ATGATT + Awareness + Skill means you might Live To Ride another day

well FZS is a good bike, but it would have been better if you had learnt riding bike with a 100cc or bikes like that.(but now that's not what matters).!! lol..!!

The 200NS and KTM, are beasts, and they unload a lot of power, so it might be hard for you to handle at this point of time, judging from what you have explained about yourself.!!

I see why you have the KTM and NS in your mind

          and as aargee suggested

these are real practical issues that u need to think about getting yourself your ride, so do think about them.

The bike I would suggest to you would be Pulsar 150 or 180, Fazer or even the FZS for that matter.!!

          Cheerz.!!

18 years!!!! My suggestion would be, get the FZ. Keep the powerful bikes for future(after you cross 21 atleast). I know, you wont care for our advices. Not until the Govt impose limitations of CC/BHP n all WRT age.

As for the fuel efficiency and the comfort you are mentioning and also about weekend touring... My suggestion for your first bike would be to go for KARIZMA R. This bike would suit all your needs and you are gonna fell in love with this bike once u ride it.

Re: Confusion regarding purchase of my first motorbike.

                Omkar,

Most of your deciding factors are common and can be seen on many modern bikes. Whatever interest you may have today in the bike you ought to buy, will dissolve in a couple of months down the line. You are just entering the motorcycling community - 18years and you have a long road ahead with great choices and technology. Trust me Omkar, you will lose interest in the current bike you may buy (200NS or Duke) very soon.

I suggest you to talk to your parents, set aside the money allocated for the new bike in a bank or FD and get yourself a regular bike (100cc/125cc) Get used to it. Easy to handle and light on pocket. Forget about friends teasing and all that crap. Be firm and think lateral. Learn the mechanism of how a bike runs and the beautiful maintenance techniques that lies within. Once you master it or have enough confidence, that is the time you could get yourself a big bike. Maybe a Harley - if you have enough funds by the time .

                1. Take time,
                2. Do not hurry,
                3. Visit as many showrooms as possible for best quotes,
                4. Negotiate the offers,
                5. Review all the topics in this forums on the bikes of your choice with relevant keywords,
                6. With patience, you might get a best deal if you wait until Diwali.

                All the best!

Re: Confusion regarding purchase of my first motorbike.

When I was in College 4 years back.. I used to take 3 bikes to college... Hero Honda Karizma, Bajaj Pulsar 180 and the Hero Honda Hunk (My Bros)..

Initially I was riding a fully modded splendor (not performance mods except the custom made FFE).. Yes.. I used to rock the college showing off, doing stunts etc etc which even landed me into trouble with the other dept guys..

but at the end of the day.. everyone knew me by who I am and not by what I owned.. the bikes were owned by Reneav and thats how people know the bikes..

All those bikes were from my dad's pocket..

Well.. What I am trying to say here is.. though I had all those bikes.. at the end.. what mattered most was if I am a good son to my parents..

yes.. I used to own one of the best bikes ever and the fastest at those times.. I had all the liberty.. My dad shed out money whenever I asked him.. but I never lost his trust..

All my friends booze by I don't.. not even a single sip of Hot drink/beer or any kinda alcohol and not a single puff of cigarette till now.. after boozing being careless riders they met with accidents..

no matter which bike you have.. you have gotta be safe.. to be safe.. learn the safety factors of riding a bike like what the other senior members mentioned above..

there are various parameters that you have to follow.. when you are riding fast/insane.. you are not only putting yourself at risk.. but also the other innocent people on the road... so learn to be a responsible rider/driver

I know this has nothing to do with the topic.. but get a small bike.. small doesn't have to mean a 100/110/125cc.. go for a 150cc segment and later once you are able to control your hunger for speed and insane riding.. though I was a fast rider.. I always had control of the bike.. can apply brakes on time..

yes.. I learnt from my mistakes.. met with a more than a couple of accidents and of course none was my fault.. and all of them were when I was riding slow.. so I learnt to concentrate as much when riding slow as I concentrate while riding fast..

I remember when I was in 11th std.. riding the splendor.. a CD 100 (completely big bored) raced me while I wasn't trying to race.. That maniac almost had me killed had it not been my control of speed and presence of mind..

Please for Gods sake.. ride a small bike first.. learn to control better and then go for bigger bikes

150cc - FZ, Fazer, Hunk, Xtreme
                  135cc - P135
                  125cc - ignitor, Stunner

if you still think about going for a powerful bike..

200cc - P200NS and Duke200 - Both these bikes are great.. but Duke 200 would be a better choice..
220cc - Karizma - R and ZMR.. both these machines are perfect for a weekend getaway..
                  Splendor - 2k to 2006
                  Karizma - 2k3 to 2009
                  P180 - 2k6 to 2k9
Hunk - Oct 2k7 til now
                  ZMR - 2010 to Forever
                  RX135(2k) - 2013 to 2018

@ Aargee :-First of all, thanks a lot mate for taking your time off and helping me out. Actually I've been researching as much as I can regarding a motorbike and it's parts. No matter how small they are.And regarding my pep. I've been riding it for last 3 years mate, you can say 'I am bored of it' LOLAnd motorbike.. Well I really want my first motorbike to be one of a kind, that is why I am urging you guys to help me.

Thanks a lot friends for replying to my thread.Well, forgive me lads, I was'nt able to control my urge to purchase new motorcycle. On 15th of August, my father is going to purchase Bajaj Pulsar 200NS.I test rode Pulsar 200, 150, and 135; Suzuki GS 150R, Yamaha R15 2.0, Bajaj Avenger and my mate's KTM Duke 200. Even though I loved Duke's low end torque, I rejected it because it was about 50K more than Pulsar 200NS.To tell the truth, this thread did not really help me in the fact of choosing bike, but it really gave me better understanding of 'The Art Of Motorcycling'.I will look after ever aspect of safe motorcycle riding, I promise.Absolutely in Love with xBHP. You people rock!Wish me luck lads! And in future if me and my sweetheart (Pulsar ofc) go through and ''rough patch'' please help me out!Cheers!Cheers!

Right indeed! But I'm sure somebody will certainly benefit from the trail of preaching .

I think, most of them already decide what they want and just want "obligation free" answers that will not only console them but also a pat on shoulders for their decisions.
People out here have shared out of their experiences. Time and money would fly away by the time these preaching sessions are recollected.

It's been 15 days since I started riding my Bajaj Pulsar 200NS, purchased her in yellow paint-job. And damn she's awesome. Though I don't ride it above 45 km per hour, still I love it. The feel is amazing. And guys I provided stupid info regarding my height, actually I was'nt knowing how much it is at that point of time.My height is 5'8.Guys I was wondering on my first service, what exactly should I get changed? And do those SVC guys clean and lube the chain or do I have to do it myself? And which Lube to use? I read here that 'Motul' is a nice product.

I dont see the relevance of preaching or telling him bikes like the P135, when he has learnt and mastered the FZ.
The guy's asked a question. Just give him the godamn answer.

And yes, from amongst the two, go with the 200NS.
The duke is a handful for a person with years of experience. The power delivery is just too mental.

But yes, when you are 18, and you just got your DL, you tend to just do what your heart says.

But then what do I know. I'm HyperRetard :P
