  • Buying my second bike, help me?

This is my second post on this forum, first being for my first bike.

I had bought a Pulsar 180 in October 2013. Have clocked nearly 15k kms on it. Now, she is a bike. Best in the market for learners, affordable, and would take the beating. I had some pretty serious falls and near misses on this one, but she never let me get hurt, not even a minor scratch. Its like she protects me. In return, I take as much care of her, as much is possible for a student. I am very close to her. We have this ritual, for every 1000kms and for every time she would save my ass, i would pat her belly, as a gratitude, as respect. She, in this almost 2 years of ownership, never failed me.

Now, my dilemma. I always felt that she was underpowered for me, me being bulky (100+kgs). So, often I would think of upgrading to a more powerful bike.
This being my story so far.

I, one day, asked my dad to buy me a new laptop for my 21st birthday. He replied, son, there's a new launch by bajaj, how about that?
Now, he has always been a very strict dad, so i am not so frank with him. Back when I wanted a bike, 200ns to be precise, he refused saying it's not a VFM package, plus with so much power and equally inverse experience, you might just kill yourself.
So this offer of his was quite astonishing, and I didn't want to miss such opportunity. So I immediately agreed to it. Now the conversation goes on-
Papa- kitne ki aegi? (How much would it cost)
Me- Not much, just 1.2l, and after selling my pulsar, cost would be halved.
    Papa- ok, doable, fine, granted.
Me- (mann ke ladoo ko chupaye) thanks dad.
In the end, he also mentioned that if there's any other bike in my mind, i should buy that one, as that I would have to own for the next 4 years. I agreed to it.

So, now, I have to finalise a bike by 14th of May.
    My options are:

    1. Duke 390- for the complete package.

    2. Thunderbird 500- for the comfortable ride, but would like to know about the vibes.

    3. CBR 250R- again comfortable ride, but i have heard that it is not good for city.

    4. Continental GT- haven't heard anything from owners, looks killer.

Now, my typical ride daily is 40 kms. Half in city traffic, half on highway. I prefer a quick bike, with good low end torque. And after owning pulsar, I would like a bike which do not vibrates at 100, when I am doing my monthly rides. Comfort is obviously an important criteria. I haven't seen any ownership reviews for conti, don't know why.
I am 5'7", bit bulky. Please suggest me a bike, which would suit my build and my riding style.

    Thank you all in advance

You are a lucky son, irrespective of which bike you buy, make sure you give it all the TLC it requires

      TLC?
Anyways, thank you for approving so soon. I hope people advice me in the right direction.

      Update:
Took a test ride of T500 and Conti. Loved both of them. T500 has those RE vibes, but very less than C350. Although it was a short ride, took it to 80, performed quite well. The brakes were satisfying.
For Conti, what a performance. Didn't feel like an RE, the only problem was the committed stance, else it is a great bike.

I have asked for a longer test ride, will do it soon.
There was one issue with T500 though. The console was not fixed, and it was moving to and fro along the vibes. Salesman said it's the design of thunderbird, the company doesn't fix the console due to some weird reason which i failed to understand.

First of all, a Happy Birthday in advance.
Among the choices you mentioned, the Conti and the TB are a little overpowered for your intended usage. Both of them are not suitable for Kolkata roads.
Why not the RS 200 abs? Has ample power and abs for safety. And as you already have a Pulsar, you will land in familiar territory.
Other options can be Tb 350 and CBR 250. The TB requires a little care and pampering but while on a long ride, the comfort is unmatched. Yes, vibes are there but nothing in this world is perfect. And RE does not have any alternatives in India. The CBR is a capable and proven tourer. And not that bad for city usage. Both of these bikes have sufficient torque and any mechanic worth his salt can repair them.
        All the best! :-)

If I am given a chance, I would choose D390, best among the bikes in your mentioned list. I drive a CL500 and I know how difficult it is to drive inside city (Chennai). Highway is a bliss...but I dont hit the highways daily. IMO, D390 does its best in both city and highway world...

Going to test ride Duke 390 and T500 in peak traffic hours, till now, liked T500. Even I am partial towards ktm, but as we all have been there, i have admired RE from my childhood.

              Thanks barun da.
I am considering T500 for mainly two reasons, apart from the comfort factor. Extra torque and power over 350, and EFI.
Will soon take a test ride of CBR

Admiring is one thing, living with it is totally another. You have to be very careful on its maintenance, else it will definitely bite back. I guess RE TB doesnt come with a Tubeless (my cl500 doesnt). Its definitely P.I.A to have the usual rubber - tube filled tyres. Vibes is a whole different story, enough has been said about it.

It doesn't. Living with tube tires in this time is certainly painful. Vibes are love it or hate it. I am not a big fan of it.

But one thing I did notice. It has become a kind of a myth that bulky people should buy REs only. Today, 5 people advised me to go for RE and not duke, as I won't look good on it. :banghead:

Re: Buying my second bike, help me?

Nice say there. People who comments like these, tell them Marc Marquez weighing only ~60 kgs with a height of 5 foot 6 inches...and he is riding the fantastic yet monstrously powered Honda RC213V (Also inform them that this RC is not from KTM ). This whole concept of looking good is very funny and ridiculous.

Also, as per the mentioned riding choices and the overall road conditions of WB, here is my 2 cents:

D390 - Heats up very much in traffic, so much that the engine may get cut off (My friend in Pune had such a situation, keep in mind, traffic in Pune is much less messy than in Kolkata). Also, due to short gearing, pull in traffic will be good, but in Kolkata special traffic you can't take it above 2nd gear. But highways it'll be good rather fantastic. But as you're well built the seat may not be as comfortable for long rides. Also has a tank range of 220-230 kms. Above 130-140 kmph, you'll have to face strong cross winds.

TB 500: Fantastic bike for long rides, as it has good power and can easily cruise at 130+ kmph speeds. With a wind screen you can take care of the cross winds though. Not a big fan of REs as, personally, I think they're not that reliable, and there'll be a slight tension deep inside while going on long tours. But otherwise, too comfortable, OK brakes, good lights. But maneuvering a TB 500 in peak Kolkata traffic maybe an issue, which you'll know better. And vibes come free.

CBR 250R: If available, will be the best option to choose. Good upright seating position, enough power, high reliability, good lights. But, AFAIK, Honda has stopped taking orders for them, as they'll be launching CBR300R soon (again, as per my sources and not confirmed).

Conti GT: There are two options I guess. Single seater one will be good looking, but on long rides you can't take your saddle bag along. Perhaps the best RE till date with a good frame and Pirelli tires and mostly they're tubeless also. Overall the best balanced RE, thanks to the chassis, and a good bike to lean among the REs.

Other bikes that can be taken into count are: D200, TB350. Just remember, going for higher CCs will not give you a better bike than your P180. Rather go for a better bike whatever CC it might boast of.

Till now, T500 is under consideration, but a long test ride in peak traffic hours is due. Duke 390 might be out of picture, due to high cost. CBR 250R and RS200 are due for test rides.

Re: Buying my second bike, help me?

You want to check RE standard 500 which comes bulky and would also enjoy the ride. My theory is; if you ride a bike for while you will get use to it. Conti is good too but I did not like TB because of light weight. I own a standard 350 and I easily beat the Mumbai traffic with ease after a 100 km of ride. CBR has good look but I am not fan of plastic look (I mean no offense to CBR owners...just my personal opinion) but I have heard nice reviews of it. Hope this help...Happy B'day in advance... Ride hard and safe on whatever you choose... Not all may love you as P180 [emoji14]

Very true. It's all about getting familiar with the bike.

Completely your personal choice. I though love the plastic looks of R15, CBR. But you've to agree these plastics are better in aerodynamics when compared to metal naked ones, and hence providing a less tiresome journey in case of heavy wind blast at high speeds for long rides spanning a whole day.

It is not possible to know every bit of a bike within one or two single rides unless you own the bike or you borrow it from someone for over a month, which is a rare probability. So choose the bike which you think will be good for you keeping in mind your riding style, reliability and your choice. Also, in such scenarios, listen to your heart and not brain.

Give serious consideration to TB 500 & CBR.

That said I find the Royal Enfields to be for the hard core bullet fans. Not everyone's cup of tea.
Best option is to have a ride on both in traffic.
