  • Good bike for commuting 80km a day

Please help me in choosing a bike for my below needs .
Commute : around 45km one way.
Type of roads : Karnataka state Chikmagalur to lingadahally (Ghat road mostly smooth roads with 3 hairpins)
Mileage : can compromise but shouldn't burn my pocket.
Comfort : must as am a banking service professional so comfort mandatory
    Maintainance : almost nil

Please advice me on a bike which fits the above. Right now I have only Honda Unicorn, RE Thunderbird 350 on my mind

Don't look further than honda dream yuga/neo.
Or you may try centuro but if o were you, I would've brought yuga as 80kms per day is a lot

Go for unicorn mileage is around 55-60kmpl.otherwise get tvs star city plus it had coated piston and best mileage of 86kmpl claim but u will get 75-80 easily 110cc bike.bedt in comfort and quality and engine. Durability.if u r looking for the sale figure than go and get the Honda dream yuga 110cc but the mileage is less around 65-70kmpl

Priorities should be 1.GS150R 2. Unicorn(personally I like it better than Trigger) and 3. Pulsar 135.
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

Thank you all for the quick response, its really great..

            Height/weight : 5'8 and 72kg.
            Pillion : Generally no
budget : well can compromise on the budget (max 1.5L)

Also my route is mostly a ghat section with climbs and descents and 4 hairpins. So would a 100-125cc bike be enough?

Re: Good bike for commuting 80km a day

80kms daily would mean that the bike should be pretty comfortable.
Do check the new Karizma. Like the previous models, these should also be very comfortable and would give decent mileage.

              Ride safe and have fun.

No way a 100cc or 125cc bike can climb ghat and hairpins with ease, for smaller engines you have to get down in lower gears to climb steep slopes ,which in turn will drink more fuel plus lots of strain on the engine, you should buy minimum 150cc bike or above it. Unicorn is nice choice but the only problem with honda is ASC.If you can stretch your budget to 1.5lac, then why not look at RE electra also.

ZMR should be a great option of doing distances in comfort. Got good service support too.

Something from the RE stables maybe?

Plenty of bikes to choose from... Can check this out for a basic comparison of a few roadtripping bikes - Roadtripping Motorbikes in India (June 2013) | Life on a Motorcycle

Have fun being confused about and figuring out your new bike... ... good confusion

                  Cheers.

I would suggest you with Karixma ZMA or ZMR. ZMR is good on F.E figures and would give you around 45kmpl on highways. Has enough torque and power, and comfortable as well..
Would never suggest an RE for daily use, as it has severe reliability issues.

Re: Good bike for commuting 80km a day

If you can get your hands on a previous generation ZMR, look no further(remaining stock). Very comfortable, reliable and has plenty of low and mid range torque to make hill driving easy. The bike is also stable around corners. No bike in the 220+ cc category offers the fuel efficiency the ZMR offers(40-45+). Unless you have a bad fall and damage vital components(fuel pump, sensor etc), the maintenance is very cheap for a bike of this size. Hero service is decent generally. I can't comment on the 2014 ZMR.

An alternative could be Pulsar 200NS. A very good all-rounder. Ride height is a little tall. Bajaj service varies from place to place.

I would not recommend Royal enfield since they suffer from reliability issues(even new ones) and you are asking for almost nil maintenance.

PS:Test ride the NS and ZMR.

Thank you all for the awesome replies Never expected so many options
So finally with sadness, have to leave my thunderbird (yet again ) as reliability is an issue and I have got an opinion that the beast cannot be ridden for 80km daily on 6 days without some snags.

So finally I am left with these options in respect to mileage, comfort, power, reliability
                        The Karizma ZMR .
CB Unicorn (yes even though outdated I do love this bike) and this one would give mileage of 50-60

But the tyres of the zmr are a bit thin. Would it be able to handle the ghats section that is always wet.? The road am using daily is the SH road from Chikmagalur to Shimoga (Karnataka) from Chikmagalur to lingadahalli...

I would say the tyres on the Karizma are perfect, as increasing your tyre width would affect the mileage a bit. The company stock tyres make the bike perform at max in Indian road conditions. Although if you are still keen on upgrading the tyres then try to find Micheliens M45 series tyres.

Appreciate all the replies here. So finally the only bike worthy of 80km commute daily through hilly region, with good mileage and zero maintainance and good comfort is the Karizma only?
The previous generation hero honda zmr was also mentioned as being suitable. However I m doubtful I can get the bike as its old stock. How is the new Hero Karizma and zmr? The looks are ugly but does it live up to its predecessor's reputation?

By backup plan is the Honda cb unicorn and cb trigger

There shouldn't be ay issues with the newer generation karizma although engine is almost same, on the bike's appearance it's the personal prefrence which matters most,

your back up plan is good both of the bike's are good, but i would say go for unicorn in case you opt for your backup plan.
