  • Help Me Out - Bike Purchase

    Hi All,

I'm starting this new thread since I am in a dilemma on which bike to buy. I have gone through several threads where members have posted their queries and clarifications on a specific bike, but my case is a little different and hence the reason for starting this new thread.

We'll I'm 35 years old, have a lovely family (wife + kid), more or less settled with a decent job and moderately luxurious life. As you might have guessed by now, this is a typical middle aged professional's story. I'm sure 9/10 people in the age bracket of 35-45 yrs would have the same state of life. But we are not here to discuss the about different phases of life so let me get straight to the point.

The last time I rode a bike was in college (about 15 years back) and the bike was 1st generation Bajaj Pulsar 150 which I had named 'YAMDUT' !!! We'll it's a long story on why the name YAMDUT and besides it's out of scope for today's discussion. I still have that bike, though it's in my native and used by my cousins.

Off late I have been gripped with a very strong desire to purchase a bike. It was not the case for the past 15 years and I was very happy to graduate to a CAR and loved the comfort it provided against my bike. But i guess "once a biker always a biker"!!!. So i started researching and went through various threads, reviews, ownership reports etc on multiple bikes and their variants. To be honest all of this got me confused.

So one day I sat down and noted down my requirement and expectations from a bike. I have listed the same for your reference:

    Requirement & Expectations
90% city commute & 10% highway or long rides
Monthly run limited to 500 Kms - Since, I would be using my car along with the bike
Pillion comfort mandatory - Otherwise from "being happily married" it would be "was happily married"
Will not be used for racing or track days
A notch above standard 150 CC bikes. I'm looking for atleast 250 CC
    A fun bike to ride

    Budget - 2.5 lacs Max

Based on the above I shortlisted a few bikes and I would request you help and guidance in choosing the correct one

    KTM DUKE (200/390)

Overall an exceptional VFM Bike. Crazy Power and highly popular among youth.

Why it doesn't work for me?
Not very fond of Orange. Doesn't go with my age (again it's my own prerogative)
    More tuned towards the youth
Too much power and doesn't like sedate driving or cruising. More race oriented
Pillion comfort has very low score in 99% of the reviews I have gone through

KTM RC(200/390) & Why it doesn't work for me?

All the reasons for not choosing Duke + Riding Posture

    NINJA 300

Exceptional bike. Very good riding dynamics, showstopper looks and that envious green color.

Why it doesn't work for me?

    Price, Price and Price!!!!

    Confused Between (See Below)

    ROYAL ENFIELD

Well I don't need to write anything about it. Superb brand, cult following and the Thump. Enough Said!!!

    Why I like this

SUITS My Physique - I'm 6 ft tall and weigh 88 KG
Durable - This bike will age with me and would suit me even when I hit 60.

    So where's the Problem

Niggling royal enfield issues, Hell lot of maintenance, sub standard After Sales Service, Outdated technology

    MAHINDRA MOJO

Heard a lot of Good things about this bike. More Cruise Oriented and solid bike. Riding Position is upright. Power flows in linearly and doesn't go into beast mode right from the word Go.

    Good Price

    So where's the Problem

Not sure about Mahindra's capability as a bike manufacturer in the first place. The bike has not proved it's mettle as yet. After Sales service remains a question. Design is a bit quirky (again it my personal opinion).

    BENELLI TNT 25

Read good things about this bike in XBHP ownership reviews thread. I have checked it personally in the showroom and it looks great in flesh. Fit and Finish is impeccable.

    So where's the Problem

I feel it is overpriced for a 250 CC bike
Not sure about DSK. They where with Hyosung earlier and now Hyosung is nowhere to be seen
After sales service and spares are bit expensive based on the information present in various forums

I would therefore request all the fellow XBHPians to help me in making a choice based on my requirement. Any suggestions, guidance will be highly appreciated!!!

    THANKS,
    BAJRANG

    Query Approved

You can remove all KTMs out of your list, or remove 'happily married' out of your marriage

The Mojo is good, pillion comfort is suspect again. The Benelli doesn't score fantastic marks for pillion comfort either!

Which leaves you with the RE.

Which leaves you with the Hornet 160! Unfortunately, not a lot of bike manufacturers care about pillion comfort.

Buy whatever she feels comfortable on, i know that sounds odd, but well you are a married man
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Why don't you include cbr 250r in your list.I agree that it's outdated but it's still a good bike and has good pillion comfort along with good cruising speed.

I'm no expert in bikes but just want to tell that it's awesome pillion comfort in Royal Enfield. I love being a pillion on my friend's Classic 350. The cushioned seats are just relaxing.

Any reason for leaving out CBR250? Because it's a tried and tested bike with good pillion comfort.
TNT25 commands the price because of the quality and performance it offers as compared to some European and Indian bikes though its still far as comapared to the Japs in quality and refinement department.

Why CBR250 is missing in your list ? RE will be best for pillion, but if this two do not make it your list.

You should go with TNT 25, I really liked the Pillion and i am happily married with that pillion comfort

              Hi,

Well if we exclude the ktm and the benelli then i think RE's fit the criteria nicely.
If maintained nicely then it shoudn't be much difficult for you; as per your requirements ( city riding ).

How about a second hand ninja ?
As the only deterrent is the price; 2.5 l should bag a decent baby kwacker ?

P.s :- How do others feel about second hand KAWASAKI's ? ( mind you NOT second hand ktm/hyosung/benelli etc)

I mean even if we pay up for a few consumables, isn't it worth having a complete package ?

Hey Monk, Thanks for your inputs. I did consider Hornet 160 initially and to be honest liked it as well. But there were a couple of reasons why I have sidelined it. The first being it's a 160 CC and I'd like to move up the power ladder to at least 250 CC. The second being it doesn't have an engine kill switch. But overall, I agree it's a good package.

Being married has it's own Pros and Cons. The biggest Pro is being married to someone who doesn't know a lot about bikes. Well that's the biggest con as well since the lady would never appreciate the cowl of an RC 390!!!! So the choice of the bike is entirely mine as long as I can find one with good pillion comfort.

HEY motomonster, I still have honda cbr250r in my list but didn't mention it in my post as it would have lead to too many options and that's where it becomes confusing. Well the reason it's at the bottom of my list is because of the following:

                1. Pretty old. Honda has just launched some face lift variants with new colour schemes. Not sure if Honda has it's priorities set in the 300-500 cc segment.
                2. Not very fond of faired vehicles and prefer naked over them

                Thanks,

Thanks viksp94, RE scores high in my list as well. In RE I'm thinking of Standard "BULLET" 500. Any feedback that you can share regarding the same.

                Appreciate your help!!

BikeLover, Indeed TNT 25 is a pretty enticing package and I did take a test drive (albeit short one) to get a hold of the bike. There is a little vibration the refinement level was also a concern. But the exhaust note was awesome for a 250 cc single cyclinder.

It's the aftersales and the promoter DSK that I'm worried about.

The typical middle class mentality comes into play my friend. Paying 2.5 L for a 2nd hand Bike..... I hope you understand !!!! I have to listen to my DIMAAG along with my DIL

Did you ever get to burn the rubber of your shoes/sandals :P I have had Hawt RE rides during summer where I had to get off the pillion seat every 30 mins due to the torching heat from silencer.. oh yeah, had to remind myself not to rest my feet comfortably

Jokes apart.. Why not consider the CBR250R.. it is a wonderful piece of machine which suits all your requirements.. Yes, I agree to your point about it being aged.. but it does its job.. it is reliable.. it is comfortable and hey.. you get ABS as an option.. which is what I would prefer first

Hey rreneav1987, Thanks for your inputs. So far,I have received maximum recommendations to consider Honda CBR250R . I shall visit the Honda Showroom this weekend for a test ride.

Please keep throwing ideas at me, as I have shortlisted the following bikes based on all the suggestions I have received so far.

                      1. Royal Enfield Standard 500
                      2. Honda CBR 250R
                      3. Mahindra Mojo
                      4. Benelli TNT 25

This is a wonderful group and I must thank Monk for approving this thread!!!

Re: Help Me Out - Bike Purchase

The CBR offers better mileage, top speed and reliability than the bullet. I was in a similar situation in 2012, where I was stuck between the Thunderbird 500 and the CBR. I felt that Indian roads can never be peacefully cruised on - some clown will suddenly cross the road, requiring powerful brakes or some situations will require high speed overtaking, and the bullet will not be able to stand and deliver in real life situations.

Then comes reliability - how often will you be stranded at the side of the road because some part fell off your bike? It happens to many Enfield's, no matter how much love you show for it.

Final thing which made me go for the CBR was the fact that modern bullets use petrol. Now, it may seem funny to senior bikers, but once I had the opportunity of seeing a diesel bullet in action, and I loved that sound so much, I ended up following that bike mindlessly, and got lost on unfamiliar streets. 😸

Compared to that diesel, petrol bullets sound like toys. So CBR it was. And 3 years later, its quite fun to ride. Brakes so powerful, the bike has thrown me twice, at low speeds.

Reliability wise, my front right fork seal gave up at 6k kms. Cost is 800rs total. Back brake light gave up twice. Cost -10 per bulb.

Both bullet and CBR are solid pieces of machinery - but if speed matters, if slicing through two trucks at 110kmph is your thing, book the Honda. For a guy like me, buying a bullet would be admitting that you've grown older, weaker, and reflexes no longer good enough to handle the fast paced action of a sport bike.

A CBR 250R with ABS would be a perfect blend of Power, Reliability, Robust and smooth engine and wide Honda network.
Also it is proven with age, people have been to Leh on it and were amazed with it.
All in all a good all round bike which fits most of your requirements.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

Hey Leech, Thanks for the info. I shall certainly test ride the Honda CBR 250 R this weekend.

Also it is proven with age, people have been to Leh on it and were amazed with it.
All in all a good all round bike which fits most of your requirements.
