  • Help me to select the best bike (Scooter)-tvs, honda, hero, suzuki, mahindra

    Hi Friends/xbhp team,

This is my first post in our xbhp. (Thanks Xbhp team for approving me).

Friends - Kindly help me to pick the best one also share your experiences, suggestions and opinions.

I am planning to buy a First bike in my life (scooter model). I have many confusions to select the best scooter available in the market now.

I have below concerns to be taken into consideration.

    1) Should have a good engine and it must have a good long term life.
    2)Good Mileage
3)Easy Maintanence and readily available spare parts at low cost.
    4)Suggest metal/fibre body.

    Available Choices:
    1) TVS Jupiter
    2)TVS WEGO
    3)Honda Activa 3G
    4)Suzuki Access 125
    5)Suzuki swish 125
    6)Suzuki lets
    7)Suzuki all new access 125
8)Hero Maestro Edge (hero's own engine first time launced)
9)Hero Duet(hero's own engine first time launced)
    10)Hero Maestro
    11)Mahindra gusto (110/125 cc)

I have not considered Yamaha alone as it was a engine and better performance but still it has below average mileage and spare parts price was high.

Friends/xbhp team I am waiting for your valuable feedback, own experience and suggestions from you.

    Thanks in advance.

Why no Yamaha? Yamaha has wonderful scooters in their line up.. The Ray, RayZ and Fascino..

I got my wife a RayZ.. I have munched more miles on it than she has.. It is light weight and easy to nimble.. Power is best in class thanks to its light weight.. My suggestion, test ride the scoots mentioned in your list..

Hi sir, Thanks for your valuable suggestion. Yes Yamaha is also doing good with performance and mileage but I guess spare parts and service are bit costly. Correct me if I am wrong. Thanks again.

Hi prasanth, Thanks for the detailed update. Yes Honda is king of scooter but it is lacking in some features that TVS and Suzuki can give for the same price.
Thanks again for your valuable update.

The new Wego and new Access 125 are superb. I have ridden the old wego and I really liked it. Suspension on the wego is brilliant. Also the new color scheme with matte grey paintjob, blue decals and black alloys looks sporty! Maestro edge also has a host of features, do check it once. Go through the maestro edge ownership thread here on xBhp. Test ride all the scoots and then decide buddy. Keep us updated.

To be Honest, I haven't had to change any spare part till now. Besides, Yamaha has long lasting spares and possibly that's the reason they cost you a little more (I am not sure as well about the cost)

                BTW, your budget?

                  Sorry for late reply..

You can read some reviews of different scooters here:

I have driven TVS Wego for the last one year - no doubt good scooter. Latest Wego comes with CBS which still missing in Tvs Jupiter.

If you are looking /giving more importance to latest features, then go for Hero Duet or Hero Maestro Edge.

Before buying Maestro Edge, I did a comparison of features in Jupiter and Edge and finally settled with Edge (extra features on Edge - Side stand on warning, External fuel filling with flap cover, immobilizer, Integrated Breaking, Digi-analog Console, Ignition switch control for opening Seat cover as well as Fuel filling flap cover. Also, Boot lamp & USB port comes with VX variant whereas in Jupiter these two are optional and one has to get it as an extra accessory?)

Also suggest you to test drive couple of models and take a decision (ofcourse I did not test drive any scooters so far but purchased them after reading many reviews and ownership experience).

                    +1 to the above post.
Maestro Edge seems the most logical choice.

                      Friends,

Adding Updates from my side regarding my decision and experience I faced while visiting near by showroom in Chennai.

I have visited showrooms to get quotation about
                      HONDA - Activa 3G, DIO
YAMAHA - Ray Z, Ray ZR.
                      SUZUKI - Lets , Access 125 , All new Access 125
                      TVS - Jupiter.

                      My concern:

My Dad is very much impressed in Yamaha (Ray Z and Ray ZR (new arrival) because of its style and he is ready to get me a scooters from Yamaha. But I am worried about the mileage , maintainence cost, Spare parts availability & cost and engine reliability (Will it be a better choice than HONDA?).

                      Need suggestion:

Pls suggest me to make a decision whether I can go with Yamaha. If Yes , what one to select ? Yamaha Ray Z or Ray ZR(Disc or drum). Also pls answer about my concerns mentioned above. Also if you suggest any other bike with better choice also most welcome.

                      Showroom experience:

Honda - Visited HONDA showroom this week. No proper response,no welcome gesture for customers and they are not interested to make the customers to get impressed and to buy the bike.

Suzuki - They gave the good hospitality.Made me to convince to select all new access 125. Overall good experience.

Yamaha - Same as HONDA. No one ready to explain. I have asked doubts in Yamaha ray z and Yamaha ray ZR but they are not even aware of the specs and they did not treat us well.

TVS- Same as Suzuki, good gesture but no knowledge to explain about the TVS Jupiter but they are ready to impress the cutomers and make them comfortable.

Hero - I did not make visit still.

Please read above and share your valuable feedback. Waiting for all the valuable response. Thanks in advance.

Re: Help me to select the best bike (Scooter)-tvs, honda, hero, suzuki, mahindra

                        Hi,

Even i am from Chennai and recently bought a TVS Jupiter one month ago, and bought it for pass light, telescopic suspension, alloy wheels with tubeless tyres 12 inch , and thats all nothing much in specific. I just needed a scooter in addition to my bike, for more flexibility, ease of drive and large storage space.
Dont worry about the dealers not responding , its very common, nowadays rarely any dealer takes interest in selling their vehicles , they know that people are going to buy so they dont do any special thing to impress a customer and even the person selling the vehicle is not aware of the features, such is the sad state of automobile dealerships in chennai. I read all the specs / brochure of a bike online and went to the dealer and asked the salesperson a question regarding a feature, and he gives the wrong answer.

The hero dealer in adyar is quite responsive, try the hero maestro edge test drive if possible. Yamaha ray is a very good model and even one of my friend is planning to buy the Ray ZR. There is not much difference between Ray Z and Ray ZR except the disc brakes. The core engine remains the same and only the features vary. Disc brakes are good but if you are a defensive rider then it wont matter you much.

About Mileage Ray ZR & Ray Z have claims of 66 kmpl whereas Jupiter is 62 and Activa is 60 kmpl so dont worry about mileage. Mileage is all about how you drive and maintain the vehicle, and your bike has got good claims. My Jupiter claims 62 but in city driving conditions gives around 50 kmpl. So dont worry at all about the mileage. Even tomorrow for example if you come to know that Activa gives 55 kmpl and your ray zr gives 50 kmpl and you drive 1250 km per month at fuel rate of 65rs per litre then also you will have to spend only Rs.150/- or so extra over activa per month. . Your monthly usage of KMs and your economic condition will help you take a decision.

General Biking Discussions: Questions, complaints, concerns, rants & everything in between, of course related to biking.

As far as Honda is concerned, since they know their Activa is a hit they literally do bring any changes to it. And most people blindly buy Activa just for the name. When i went to take test drive the new activa 125 cc with disc brake, the salesperson was starting a new vehicle and he was literally pressing the electric starter for 30-40 secs continuously, he told as its a new vehicle and is ready for delivery to a customer he cant give a test drive of the vehicle. I left from there pitying the customer that he is getting a vehicle which takes so much time to start.

If your heart is set on Ray Z or ZR then go for it, Yamaha has got a good reliability and now with the blue core technology it has entered the commuter segment and is competing with other leaders like TVS, Honda etc. Both Z and ZR have same engine. Ray Z has integrated backlight with indicators cluster whereas in Ray ZR the indicators come out protruding like those a of a bike. My view is integrated lights are good and easy to maintain. My bike's left indicator got damaged because of lots of people getting on / off improperly. Mostly in bikes you will find that the left indicator gets broken or damaged first.

                          Hi RSK,

Thanks for your valuable feedback and explanation. It really gives me a good idea to select the one I need. I can see the price difference is also not much difference between Rayz/Zr or TVS Jupiter. I have dilemma between ray z/zr vs TVS Jupiter because in most of the reviews and shootout many recommended to go for TVS Jupiter.
Also I could find much conversation/reviews about Yamaha ray z/ ZR. If you could share me the link about Yamaha ray z/zr user reviews it will be helpful. Thanks.

Currently my interest is towards Yamaha Ray Z/ZR.

I have 3 yamaha scooters in my extended vehicle family. Two being 2 year old rays and one, a year old fascino. All 3 scoots deliver mileage north of 50 kmpl. Infact my fascino gives a mileage of 55+. Maintainance is near 0. Apart from the regular lube changes ofcourse. I am very happy with yamahas. They are sturdy, very well put together, run well and can easily keep up with regular traffic. The only thing is they lack features like external fuel filling etc.
