  • My Dilemma with FZ-16

    Hi guys,

I was planning to buy the LOTS ( FZ-16) this week... but two of my friends who own it have put me in a confusing position...

    They say.. :

    1. The average is bad... around 38.. has crossed 1200 km nd has done 1st servicing as well..

    2. Turning radius is bigger than the rest of the bikes.

    3. Problems with the self start, doesnt start on the first click sometimes..

    4. You have to use ymaha lube of Rs 500 during every service thats what the guys at yamaha recommended, if u use some other brand they will nort cover warranty, also chain oil is too costly, as its cahin is different, u cant use normal oil, "kharab ho gayi to koi mechanic haath bhi nahin lagayega"

    5. both Initial cost & Owning & Operating Cost. for the bike is high as servicing is costly..

    6. here u have to pay both thinngs much higher than any other bike in the same segment it requires special yamha parts, yamaha lube, etc. no local brand..

So now i'm in a very confusing position as i dont know what to do..

    I had shortlisted Puslar 150 , FZ-16 , RTR-160 and CBZ-Xtreme..

kindly put some light on the chices and also the above mentioned dilemma...

This is my first bike and i would love to own the best option possible.

    Thanx
    Neil

I don't want to suggest that this is the best bike or what ever but there are many misconceptions in the info you have got. Let me try to clear some:

      1. The average is bad... around 38.. has crossed 1200 km nd has done 1st servicing as well..
Please read the ownership thread for yesterday's and today's posts. Yes, FZ is a tad lower on mileage front compared to other bikes in its segment.

      2. Turning radius is bigger than the rest of the bikes.
The FZ is very flick-able and the turning radius isn't high for comfortable city riding. However, the rear tyre is pretty fat and you feel the width when you turn but it handles very well and turns easily.

      3. Problems with the self start, doesnt start on the first click sometimes..
cannot comment on this but I haven't seen or heard this in our ownership thread so far. there was a discussion that the FZ's self start has a decompressor and that should aid in easier start. dunno much abt it.

Yamalube costs Rs 180 and 220 for two different variants. Same or lower than other oils in the market. It is very good oil. You do not need to use the Semi Synth oil that costs over Rs 400. Also, you have all the right to completely deny using Yamalube if you want to. All that warranty story is just bull s**t. They make about 15% on each oil can and that is good money.

As for the chain, you can get your own chain lube if you want to maintain the bike well. OKS is good and cheaper as it is made in India as against not that great but expensive ones. Most bikes you have around have open o-ring chains except the Unicorn, Hunk, and the Suzuki GS150R. Not very sure if the new Pulsar 150 too comes with a O-ring chain. Any open chain needs a little extra maintenance than a closed chain.

      5. both Initial cost & Owning & Operating Cost. for the bike is high as servicing is costly..
Which city are you from? I think the Service center people are following "make hay while the sun shines" method and trying to sqeeze money out of customers.

      6. here u have to pay both thinngs much higher than any other bike in the same segment it requires special yamha parts, yamaha lube, etc. no local brand..

Yamaha spares are among the cheapest in the Industry. You don't need to buy any add-on accessories that are expensive. Yes, the bike is costly to buy and no comments about it.

So now i'm in a very confusing position as i dont know what to do..

      I had shortlisted Puslar 150 , FZ-16 , RTR-160 and CBZ-Xtreme..

All are good bikes. Each one you have listed has its own character and their owners like or dislike them for those reasons. Go with what your heart says.

Oh BTW. I'm a MBA student doing my MBA from Symbiosis , Pune. I am currently in Delhi for my internship. Was thinking of buying it from here and taking it there.

But i have heard that there is some Non-Mah. number plate registration thing where in no Non-Mahrashtra vehicles can b driven without registration and all. My father is in defence services and i havnt heard nethin like this before, even though we've travelled all across india. Wat can be done about it ??

So will it be wiser buying it in delhi and taking it there ?? or should i go and buy it there only ??... sorry guys...too much confusion.. :P ...

If u want some good poser value, some awesome handling and a very good city bike with a comparatively lower FE, then go for the FZ 16.

Else look at the other options. Have a test ride of them and decide amongst your priorities.
When everything comes ur way, u r in the wrong way ;)

instead of the Fz take a look at the new Pulsar 180 or RTR 160 . both are great bikes and are cheaper to maintain and run as well .also cost less too .

                  1. Buddy...the average of FZ is indeed around 40 kmpl...i think its decent....

                  2. Yes..the turning radius is a little bigger than other bikes but you never notice it because of its superior handling and flickability.....unless you are
turning it in your parking space

                  3. Nope. the self start is the best in class....starts even when the bike is soaked in heavy rain on first click...

                  4. the service dealer there is trying to rip-off you....you can use the normal yamalube costing rs.220. and all open chains need a little extra care...yes OKS is a good option as HYDBIKER said...

                  5. The servicing cost is almost same as the other bikes you mentioned...

                  6. Yes. the bike is expensive but its spares are cheaper than most of its competitors...

Hopes this helps you...So ...its upto you buddy....cheers....

Performance wise - RTR and P180 are best
Braking - RTR and Fz equally good
Handling - Fz is little better than all due to monoshock but RTR is the sharpest handler .
Mileage - RTR is best Mileage
Comfort -FZ is comfortable for rider but you may wanna check the pillion comfort as many pillliions dont find it comfortable , RTR due to Clip-ons and rear set sporty position takes a toll after long hours of ridin .
Maintence cant say much but personally ive never spent on anything other than service bill that is 240 every time till now[8k kms]

See I dont mind the 40kpl thing... my only hesitation is the aftersales problems faced like.. the bike not starting wth self nd have to drag along since no kick start...or the milage going down considerably to say 30-35 or something...

can anything be done wth the console ?? i dint like it much ...

out of P150 - RTR160 - FZ16 ... i just need to narrow down to the final decision...

so can anyone compare these three on pros nd cons..
Thanx a lot guys... (its just the excitement of gettin a bike thats makin me write so much)...please bear wth me...:P....lol..

Im not really sure if its gonna be of any use to the thread poster. But anyways atleast to clear up Insane's doubt im gonna go ahead and post

                              OTR Bangalore:

                              1).Yamaha FZ-16: 75,000 + Misc. INR
                              2). HH Karizma R: 82,000 + Misc. INR

If one is able to avail of the annual road tax payment scheme (Govt. employees etc), which is 115 Rs a year, then the Zma OTR becomes 75,000 INR.

                              Cheers !
