  • Help for Uttarakhand : Planning

    Hi XBHPians,
So we all know about the recent disaster which happened in Uttarakhand & some parts of Himachal. We, the bikers, always have soft spot for the hills, don't we? I was watching the news & somehow wanted to go personally over there & volunteer for relief work. That would be a far fetched idea. But we can still do something about it, don't we.

EDIT: xBhp is going to organize a fund-raising G2G on this coming Sunday, June 30, 2013, 7 a.m. at the xBhp dhaba in Qutub institutional area where we will collect the donations from the willing xBhpians. However, this G2G is not restricted to xBhpians only. Anybody who is willing to contribute in this noble cause is welcome. You can bring your friends/family members who would like to contribute, or collect their contributions and submit it the G2G.

The money thus collected will be used to buy the following essentials

    1. Biscuits/ ration
    2. Torch/ batteries/ candles/matchboxes
    3 Tarpaulin (to make shed)
    4. Ground sheet/ Blankets
    5. Basic medicines- Crocin/combiflam/ etc ( please be careful with expiry dates)
    6. Old clothes (Request the members to kindly respect the dignity of the people who need it. Kindly donate only the stuff that is in reasonably good shape. Kindly make sure that clothes you donate are properly washed and/or dry-cleaned.

All these items will then be sent to one of the collection points of Where Eagles Dare (an organisation run by a well known and respected xBhpian, Tilak Soni who is based out of Uttarkashi himself) from where it will be sent to the flood affected areas in Uttarakhand and distributed by Tilak Soni and his men. For more information, kindly read this post

IMPORTANT: xBhpians from out of the Delhi/NCR area who are willing to contribute, kindly read this post

Thanks for taking the initiative Dipankar.

We'll definitely do something. Let me get back on this by evening. Meanwhile, lets hear what others have to say on this. I am thinking of doing something with the help of Tilak Soni who is already in the affected area in Uttarkashi and is an xBhpian himself.

Yes, Tilak can be our point-man as he is based in Uttarkashi, is in first-hand touch with the local administration and a couple of NGO's who are doing good work there. But first we need to decide in what manner are we to contribute towards the rescue and support work. Which is where we need you all to put those grey cells to work and come up with ideas.

Re: Help for Uttarakhand : Planning

Couple of points from my end.\

Our company has started CSR initiative by asking us to contribute to any of the items listed below:

Plastic sheets- Very important as they can build temporary shelters for staying.
Nylon Rope- Support for plastic shelters.
          Biscuit packets- ready to eat.
          Fabric- Old cloths
          Blankets
          Sheets
          Tetra milk/juice packs
          Disposable napkins
          Bleaching powder
          Chlorine pills
          Drugs phitkari ware
          Mosquito repellent candles
          Glucose
          Electoral sanitizer
          Led flashlight Matchbox (liters)
Now, the problem, what I think is even if we collect these materials, it would be logistically hard to send them there safely in time unless we are sure of the NGO's capability. I am just assuming. The easiest way is to collect money & wire them. But then again, I am not sure whether Tilak or any NGO would be able to buy stuff from there as some businessmen have started charging exorbitant amount for all items.

Members are requested to put their thoughts in this.

Re: Help for Uttarakhand : Planning

Guys, call it a mere co-incidence or a divine intervention, Tilak Bhai called me just before I was going to call him.

The things he told me about the recent floods created a horrible picture, far more serious than what we see in the news.

There, a lot of people have lost everything they had - their house, shops, livestock, vehicle, money, EVERYTHING and they do need help from us in whatever way possible.

As per Tilak Bhai, irrespective of who we chose as our medium of help to the flood affected people, we should avoid sending money and instead help with the actual stuff they need - plastic sheets, medicine, clothes, match box, torch, etc.

And Tilak ji himself has taken it upon him (with his group Where Eagles Dare) to collect all this stuff from whatever resources and distribute it among affected people. here's what he has posted on his facebook wall

            Dear Friends,

As we are all aware of the tragedy that has struck Uttrakhand , WED in its own small capacity intends to reach out to those affected by the destruction.
We have a few collection centers in and and around NCR/ Uttarkashi as for now where in any member can donate essential items ( please note we are not accepting any money) . These items will then be moved forward to Uttrakhand, where in WED would arrange for further distribution.

Probable items that we are collecting is :
            1. Biscuits/ ration
            2. Torch/ batteries/ candles/matchboxes
            3 Tarpaulin (to make shed)
            4. Ground sheet/ Blankets
            5. Basic medicines- Crocin/combiflam/ etc ( please be careful with expiry dates)
            6. Old clothes
Please spread the word and help us in reaching out to people in these testing times.
            Items can be donated with
            1. Kartik Virmani- 9899669052

Please mail/contact us prior , in-case you are interested in extending a helping hand.
Also please share with your friends and family .
so, we're definitely going to arrange a G2g this coming Sunday to do whatever we can. This is the basic plan we have. and this G2G won't be restricted to xBhp members or bikers. Anybody who want to come and contribute is most welcome to do so. in case you want to go to these collection centers mentioned above, you can do that too. Based on the funds collected on Sunday, we'll buy the stuff mentioned by Tilak bhai and send it Uttarkashi.

and yes, in case you want to donate your old clothes (woolen/rain gear/umbrellas) you can do that too.

p.s: If you want to donate your old clothes, kindly respect the dignity of the people who need it. Kindly donate only the stuff that is in reasonably good shape.

Ok... have you guys heard of Savemax? There is one located near Kalka Mandir, Nehru Place. It's kind of big bazaar which sells almost all type of items at good discount. If we are planning to collect money then we can visit this store to buy these items.

Re: Help for Uttarakhand : Planning

I hope the logistics would be in place to send these things to Uttarakhand.

A lesson i learnt from a similar G2G in Delhi after the Leh floods in 2010 was this

                1. Everyone has a bunch of fancy ideas.
                2. Some get opinionated on how the relief work should be done.
                3. People take up responsibilities which they are not able to follow through.

As far as i know, nothing came out of that G2G. If it did, i stand corrected.

I would suggest some basic steps

                1. Talk to the Delhi contact of the facebook post about the logistics involved in sending over the stuff.
                2. How much quantity can be transported.
                3. Once we know the volume, lets collect money with a minimum of Rs xxx per person in the G2G this weekend. More the merrier.
                4. Some core/volunteer members could work out where to purchase the stuff needed.
                5. Get it delivered to the Delhi contact/loading place.

Lets meet up and get stuff done.

                    Thanks RX.
Now the three questions that remain
                    1. Transport ?
                    2. What stuff
                    3. Volume (100 torches, easier to send than 100 blankets - volume)

I think it would be appropriate for sunilg/any others who know Tilak Soni personally, to ask these questions.

If we have this in place, all of us who are interested in donating money can collect money locally through their friends etc and give the total amount in the G2G on Sunday.

Re: Help for Uttarakhand : Planning

Some very valid points raised by you guys.

Instead of buying from any super bazaar/retail chain, we'd rather buy it from Sadar Bazaar kind of markets where it is actually cheaper. Though what we buy directly depends on the money we have in hand + the knowledge of a vendor who can give us this stuff and a very good price.

So ideally we should buy only those things which we can get maximum, though we shouldn't end up sending 100s of cartons of candles/match box just because we got it cheap.

As per my conversation with Tilak, we just need to drop the stuff we've collected to their collection centers in Delhi and they'll take care of sending it to ground zero in Uttaranchal, since they are also collecting the donations from other resources as well. Though I'll talk to him once again and confirm.

Though we'll definitely need some cars and some big plastic bags to carry the collected stuff from the G2G point to Tilak's dropping point in Delhi/NCR.

So as of now, we need immediate help on this from members:

If any one of you knows a manufacturer/supplier who can give us either or all of the above-listed items at a good price (and ideally give us a discount too for this noble cause) then do let us know.

Maybe we (NCR guys) could share the same on fb. Its Delhi! Sabke koi na koi contacts toh hotey hi hai I have shared it on my wall.

Though any supplier/manufacturer will give a discount based on the volume and the authenticity of purpose (which we might have to show him)

i too would like to contribute like everyone else, so kindly give us an account number so that those who are not in delhi can also contribute.

i have a few doubts and suggestions--

by the time our help will be ready for dispatch, maybe most of the ppl would have been evacuated so... can we help in evacuation, if our money is sufficient to hire atleast one chopper trip from affected area to nearest city by hiring private choppers. i may sound foolish.

one more thing, there are a lot of ppl stranded there, who are alive but not able to convey this to their near and dear ones, i do not know but if mobile network is working may be a working mobile phone with talktime so that a volunteer lets them talk to their family members. or a sat phone. just guessing.

                          may be food packets.

whatever you guys do.. i am in.
