  • @antz.bin... just checked the cramster india site but couldn't find the Raptor, is it no longer available? Btw... sorry, i did'nt get this - 'So, even though you will be sweaty at the end of the day, you wont be dehydrated.' How is it possible?
@ all... how is dsg nero for pune city climate? What is the difference between dsg nero & phoenix? (both similarly priced)

by sweaty, he means that the sweat does not evaporate so you do not continue to lose body fluids.

On a hot summer afternoon, when you are riding, the sweat is evaporated quickly. the faster you ride, the faster the sweat is evaporated and the faster you lose water. hence, you need to take frequent water breaks and lesser pee ones :P . however, if you do not use a ventilated jacket, since the sweat does not evaporate, the rate of fluid loss is a bit less.

but still, i'd prefer to be comfy with more water breaks and less pressure of peeing :P... to hell with dehrdration :P

In summers, you might *feel* that the jacket is very comfortable and helps you keep cool. But in reality, it can severely dehydrate you within 100km of riding in the sun. With a Textile jacket, you can keep going all day much more easily. Hence, useful only inside city for short commutes. Impractical for summer touring. Textile jackets help retain the body fluids. So, even though you will be sweaty at the end of the day, you wont be dehydrated.

In winters, if the temperature drops below 20, it will be waay too airy to wear without the liner. Even with the thermal liner, the airflow is still too much as the cold wind can still get to you through the zippers (as the liner doesn't cover it from inside). Getting a textile jacket for any winter commutes/touring is the smarter thing to do.

In light rains, since the jacket is mesh based, it won't even be able to save you in case of drizzles, and only the chest and shoulders are spared for sometime (due to the sponge based chest protector and the shoulder leather inserts). Arms get wet. A textile jacket will at least save you in case of a drizzle without needing to stop for putting on a Raincoat. For anything more than a slight drizzle, both jackets are useless without a Raincoat.

And thats the reason why even though I own both the aforementioned jackets, due to its extremely limited usability, not many people have seen me wearing my DSG Maze.

If however, the usage will be purely city, a Mesh based jacket is the smart thing to have.
        Dear antz,

Thanks a million for your incisive analysis.

Sorry for the bother but one question. I am asking you as you own both types so please humour me.

Does the Maze feel "airy" while riding - lots of air circulation around the body vs the Raptor? I'll tell you why. I perspire HUGELY, just HUGELY in the summers and any clothing which retains the sweat is terribly bad for me. So,a really well ventilated jacket is critical to me. I don't mind the water breaks and pee breaks but just cannot stand the perspiration being retained on my person. I don't mind the cold - have seen minus 30 in Siachen - but heat sucks the life out of me.

In my opinion, no jacket other than a truly waterproof one - either a pure rubber one a la Duckback or a Neoprene one - can be really completely waterproof. It can be a bit water resistant but that is about all. Like you said, anything beyond a drizzle warrants a raincoat. And I usually don't ride in the rain - my CBR's tyres don't like it. And again if I do, it is with proper rain wear

With this perspective, would you recommend a Maze?

        Thanks

No, Actually the Raptor feels 'airy' while riding if you keep the vents open. It is not like a regular 'winter' jacket. Rockerzzzzz's opinion is based on the fact that he wore a 'Winter' jacket for most of his touring till recently. The Maze feels as if you are not wearing a jacket at all. If you need the 'extra' ventilation, you might as well try it. But I would still not recommend it for a summer tour. Believe me, as long as you are in motion, the vents do an adequate job. When still, the matter may be subjective, but how long does it take to pull down the zipper and 'let the air-force in' .

I know you are from the army, but still, starting a tour cruising along on the 1st 15deg C morning at 100kays will surely leave me with a cold for the rest of the road trip OR reduce the cruise speed severely.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Thanks for the tip. I will check out both of them when in Pune next.

Actually, I have a Siachen parka from Richener of Switzerland. It is excellent for summers and winters but has no armour protection. So I guess I will HAVE to go in for a proper riding jacket.

If you want something which can work in winters, highway cruising in summers and bit of rain than check the DSG Falcon, as the new ones come with chest padding also now and its an all rounder jacket.
