Bikers’ Bluetooth headgear spells headache for cops

Mumbai: As the traffic police lead a clampdown on non-ISI mark helmets, there is another worry that is threatening to become a severe headache. A new headgear for bikers with a Bluetooth device has entered the city’s market and, much to the
cops’ chagrin, is steadily gaining popularity.
The hi-tech helmets are fitted with a speaker phone and a small microphone that need to be paired with a cellphone and regularly charged. With the Bluetooth, a biker can not only talk on the phone but access a GPS system and listen to music. Not surprisingly then, the traffic police-who are cracking down on bikers using non-ISI helmets or imported helmets with foreign safety certificationare not amused. “This kind of a device is not specifically mentioned as prohibited under the law, but anything that distracts a driver or a rider is illegal and dangerous not only for him but also for others. Anyone seen we a r i n g such a helmet while riding a twowheeler can be punished,” said deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Brijesh Singh.
Even the bikers’ community is divided over the use of Bluetooth-fitted helmet. While there are some enthusiasts, others criticize it as unsafe. “Say, if the rider is having an argument with someone while speaking over the Bluetooth-enabled device or if someone calls him with some bad news, he may lose his concentration and that may lead to a fatal accident,” said Sajid Shaikh, a vintage bike specialist. But some say by wearing these helmets, riders can comfortably speak on their mobiles, without having to hold on to them and that way, they would not lose balance of their twowheelers. “Despite the ban on using a cellphone while driving
or riding, many, particularly bikers, continue to illegally speak on phones. At least, with these Bluetooth-fitted helmets, riders would not have to hold the phones and lose control of their bikes,” said Iqbal Shaikh, a motorcyclist. Another resident, Rajesh Dave, demanded that if the device was not allowed, then the police should also stop motorists from using Bluetooth-enabled mobiles while driving.
Priced between Rs 7,000 and Rs 15,000, the helmets can be found in bike accessories shops in some parts of south Mumbai.
According to a source, these helmets were only meant for those participating in dirt biking or going on long trips; if the Bluetooth is paired, two riders on a deserted stretch can communicate with each other within a distance of 2 km.
HELMET GOES HI-TECH Helmets fitted with a Bluetooth device began being imported in 2010 and soon had two-wheeler riders using it Traffic cops say they will take action against bikers wearing these helmets as talking on a mobile while driving or riding is illegal. These helmets are not certified by the Indian Standards Institute; they have the certification mark from the country they are produced in, which is not acceptable here
The Bluetooth device allows the user to navigate GPS systems and, when attached to a music player, to listen to songs If a traffic policeman catches a rider wearing a Bluetooth-attached helmet, he can impose a fine of Rs 100
The Bluetooth of one rider, if paired with that of another, can also act as a wireless; instead of using earphones, the bikers can talk to each other via Bluetooth, but they have to be within a distance of 2 km

In Raid this year, many people were carrying these kind of cans. Have heard from those, who have used it, that it works.

I was carrying one such can with me on a ride in 2008, when I had a flat. I used it but it just didn't work as expected. It could be due to a "big" hole or may be the can was used after its expiry date, as I have bought it long time back.

PS - Read the servicing interval "Servicing done every 2000kms"; I'd start off asking why it was done against the manufacturer's suggestion!!!

Try selling in Nana Peth, you will get much higher price. Also check at Yash Motors, the shop is in close to Bombay Motor Accessory Shop, besides the petrol pump in Nana Peth. They give good resale value.

You have not been fortunate enough to lay hands on this bike. This bike REALLY IS nearly brand new as it has changed nearly every part be it body or engine till now. Only part that was not changed was the rider which would happen shortly.

My deepest condolences to the new buyer.
