The Official Pune Offline Meet(G2G) Thread

The debate in the three to four posts preceding this post is the whole reason that we had the G2G yesterday. I am seeing a lot of suggestions today..a good thing and bad at the same time as these contributions would have been good had they come when we were discussing our new mandates.

Regarding the wholesomeness of the gear, a helmet, armored jacket, riding gloves, knee pads/riding pants and ankle covering shoes/riding boots is the most basic that one can get.

As decided, no skipping out on the same!! I know that for a few, the complete riding gear would be either "not necessary" or "not affordable". But as I said, safety comes at a price. In this case, it is about buying gear. If many people come upfront, they can negotiate group discounts too.

A few posts back, Niks had suggested dropping the senior, junior, newbie tags to avoid discrimination. My question is...who discriminates? The senior reference to one of my earlier posts has to do entirely with the fact that the people in context were old timers (and hence seniors).

If you wish, I can address them as old timers..would that be better?

I personally don't believe in elbow/knee guards as separate entities, the reason I never bought them. Knee guard for instance, hamper my knee from holding the tank(that I always like to do) and they also damage the tank.

In fact, this reply of you comes as a surprise at least to me, since you are a very senior member than majority of us and me and many others know that you have more kilometers riding experience than many of us.

All i can say is this if the tank paint gets spoiled you can always re paint or get stickering job as that would be much cheaper in case of any fatal injury to the knee.

Worst scenario replace the tank cover saar.

As this reply of yours can really make things bad for many newbies and they know knee guards are compulsion and a major protocol in our pune chapter, they are waiting to join us for rides but are kept aside for not having gears, will use this reply of yours as excuse and cross question back.

So you see the consequences can be really bad for them.

Biggest problem is the unavailabilty of gear at planet DSG.And i didnt find AXO shoes or alpinestar knee guards anywhere else.
Waiting for the right size boots since weeks..Also for the knee guard stock!

I do agree with the knee guards scratching the tank.I really dont want to put any vinyl on my tank.So riding pants (with knee protection) as an option to knee guards wont do any harm i guess.

As it is,those knee guards arent for sports bikes where you need the tank grip.Those are for dirt bikes/street bikes which dont need tank grip.Atleast thats what the only smart guy at the shop told me.I know we get them cause riding suits are not everybody's piece of cake.& are impractical in our day-to-day routine & not everybody is a sport rider.

I heard that DSG is launching its own riding pants now. Btw, I am looking to buy a pair of gloves, mostly DSG Primal. Anyone else? We could club our purchase together and get discount.

I feel nav is being misquoted here. He said he prefers riding jacket over elbow guards. Jackets already have elbow guards. He prefers riding pants over knee guards, so riding pants too are armoured at the knee , aren't they ? ? So he is in my opinion not promoting anything unsafe.

completely agree with NV here & a good consensus following the G2g to mandate for basic gears

I think this was but just a logical outcome of what we have been trying to implement over the years & if it does drive away some than so be it

The real issue is to implement all the valid points discussed & that is where we fail sometimes giving rise to the same discussions every 3-4 months

A solution to above will really be helpful across both the Mumbai & pune chapters.

PS:continuing the knee guard thing -- scoyco pants are cheap (2500) almost the same price as good knee guards & can be used daily too.

As for me the only time I have been hurt in the past decade (3 times)have been in the city (always the knee area) when not wearing guards.

I am in sync with Satyen to introduce on an experiment basis but the fact remains that one of incidents will continue to happen & there's little that can be done.

The only solution lies in the hands of the members that make up the team. I believe this is a group responsibility and everyone is responsible; much like swarm logic.

This is a culture change for many and an "out of the comfort zone" experience for others. Till people get used to it, each person must ensure that the rules are followed by themselves and others around.

What would be needed is a bimonthly review of the rides in the review period. I know, I'm sounding like a typical manager but then that is what we have learned and need to use in this case too. Once the culture sets in, things would automatically fall in place.

This gear is mandatory for rides only.For g2g's you need to be
1.thick skulled (good impact resistance)
2.thick skinned (with good abrasion resistance)

Why not? Actually, we also passed a resolution to have First Aid Training imparted to all the members, batch-wise, over a period of time. There are a lot of hospitals and Organizations that offer these courses; some of them for free. Interested?

Yeah sure, and the same debate of free vs paid continues to happen on that forum. But the First Aid training is more of a post mortem to the issue we are targeting...

My issue was only with The gear part. I was always ok with everything else. The rest would stand Irrespective of whether you knit yourself in leather or ride stark naked.

Cost of buying knee guard and repairing/replacing tank will be more than a riding pant. Hence, I waited to find a riding pant (for the uninitiated, I have been searching for one since 2010 - though I didn't visit the shops on a daily basis) and recently bought one.

How many people you know who have fallen/crashed and have hurt their knee so badly that they need some serious surgery & what kind of speeds they were doing and how the accident happen?

@NV: Don't you think that in the basic riding gear, the riding jacket should be optional instead a decent jacket (leather / thick material) with elbow guard be enough? Just like the knee guard are min required, instead of riding pant.
PS: Let me know if this is not the right place to discuss such stuff. Can wait till the next meeting to happen.
