Re: Duke 390: Long Term Ride Review

Great review and many thanks to MG for delaying it no more. And of course the Pics are brilliant as always, especially the one taken at dusk.
You have explained pretty much everything to clear most doubts and even done some useful comparisons with D200 and N300 and other Indian bikes which adds a lot of value to XBHP review compared to reviews at other sites.

Now the little things which probably would be interesting to know-
1. How are the lights and horn?
2. During rains or dust do the wheels throw up muck on the rider? What if we remove the rear wheel mud guard?
3. How easy is the sitting pose for long rides with the way foot peg is positioned?
4. Only side stand is it an issue?
5. How good is the instrument console?
6. And lastly, how bad is the heat generated when riding in busy city traffic for say like 30min+?

Thanks again MG. If its ok can you mention the reason for hold up of review? Did they fix the temp issue?

cheers.

Re: Duke 390: Long Term Ride Review

Some super pictures with very informative review. Thanks.

Minimum speeds at which KTM 200 can be ridden in various gears (All are speedo indicated)

2nd -Can be used from standstill
3rd -13
4th -20
5th -25
6th -30

For Duke 390
My only concern with 390 is running in 1st gear in in heavy traffic. would feel much comfortable if at least i could run it in 2nd gear at slow speeds without knocking. For eg, slowing down in 2nd gear for a moderately high speed breaker, crossing it, and continuing, without shifting to 1st. How i planned was to use the 390 for daily commuting, and occasional short rides, and modify my current C5 for the longer rides. Now i am in a dilemma as to whether i made the correct decision by waiting for 390 or 200 would have more suited my needs.
are there any sure-shot ways in which we can overcome this in the 390? without harming the engine? Someone mentioned sprocket change? would it really solve the issue? Could a piggyback ECU help? or this is how the gear ratios are designed and nothing much can be done about it to change its nature and make it more friendly w.r.t running it in 2nd/3rd at lower speeds?

Awesome ride report could have had more of those beautiful pictures! :P But no mention of competition? I would love to know how it fairs against the N300 especially with respect to touring..
Regardless, Life shall go on.

Re: Duke 390: Long Term Ride Review

Time to put after market stuff like exhaust wrap, and engine heat shield and may be use Engine Ice to keep the engine temps under check and also not get grilled while riding the bike. I am quite stoked to see the performance figures are at par with what is to expected of such a bike. Though yes one will have to spend greens on a windshield or else the rider would clearly tire out from constant lashing of wind blast at high speeds.

I hope KTM does consider manufacturing a bigger tank as one of KTM power parts as it is observed in EU for some of the bikes. The limited range is definitely playing a spoilsport for the riders aspiring to stretch her legs for long distance riding. Most of the tourers don't always face mud and slush so hopefully it should not be too much of a problem.. 30 kmpl is avery decent FE for a 43.5 bhp bike, i was actually expecting lower figures on highway rides.

Cheers,

Fantastic review. Very detailed!

I have a question - how is the low & mid end compared to the R15 v1? On lower gears (1-4), the R15 v1 is usable above 3.5k-4k rpm and the bike really wakes up above 7k rpm. How does this compare with the KTM390?

Edit - Another question - in terms of feel and outright stopping power, how are the brakes compared to R15?

MG thanks for the amazing review with spot on discussion on the various debate issues that are being discussed by the various group members and BTW the pics are superb have fallen in love with the bike and indeed it would be a worthy upgrade from my Pulsar 200 DTSi.
Can you please share your thoughts on the ergonomics of the bike for a ride of say 120+kms (which would be my office ride on fridays...to release the madness!!).
Also I dont know why people are saying that 130+kmph is not good honestly i think if one is doing 100+kmph on a bike on our highways is a feat in itself and also quite dangerous..

@MG: At last!!!! Great review, great photos. Thanks a lot.

This review seriously increases our restlessness towards delivery. After knowing the review is out, I started believing strongly that the bikes are on their way for delivery. Let the good times roll.

Only 2 things pestering my mind now, 1. Bajaj strike still unresolved 2. Petrol price touching 75 bucks a liter.

Anyways, lets have fun with our machines.
