  • Have You Tanked Up!?

Thursday evening while coming back from Delhi I saw long queues of vehicles at the petrol pumps. At some stations the waiting time was 10 mins while for some it was reportedly 2-3 hours. I was in my car and was pretty sure that this is just a small problem that will get sorted out by tomorrow or so. I got petrol worth Rs. 500 and came home. While on my way home I came across long queues and at some places the Mathura road was jammed due to queues spilling over the highway.

As I sat in front of my TV and watched the news at night the situation was getting grim and it looked that the problems is getting worse. The talks have failed and they are going to have a meeting on Friday noon. What about till then? By every hour the percentage of the petrol pumps running dry kept on rising after which I decided to make the move. At 5:30AM I went to the nearby petrol pump - DRY ... Second one - DRY ... Third one - DRY ... Fourth one - still running, which I could make out from a distance by looking at the queue even at this hour of the day. There was only one pump running and the cars had queued up for that. Bikers who came to get fuel were told to either get in the line or go away since only one pump was working. I got in the line. And after 35 minutes I was able to get the fuel.

Well I don't know but I really hope that the situation is not as worse as it seems now. Last night I was talking to aryan and said that maybe we are over-reacting. But, after hearing the failure of the talks and pumps running dry every hour it's better to be safe than sorry. Right now in the news they are saying 60% of the pumps have gone dry. I can imagine the kind of rush there is gonna be today at every working pump.

And all this made me think about the thing we are ignoring - The Future. This is just one day and look where we are. What about the time when this is not just a small strike but rather a global extinction of the petroleum resources. We might have a way then but things will never be the same again. The whole country seems to be coming to a stand still. Government has asked consumers to use LPG efficiently at home. The CNG stations will come down today after ONGC employees stopped the production off the mumbai shore. They say even the government buses just have one day of diesel with them. What if the strike goes for 2 more days? Just a small trailer of the future.

    Off-Topic Approved.

A real topic of discussion! Even though I have fuel in my bike's petrol tank for the moment, but this is seriously a great cause of concern. People might have been over-reacting, they might have been not but the main point now is that since the talks have failed, we really do not have any idea for how long this strike might stretch.

It would put some real pressure on an already "under pressure" economy. As for the future, like I've always said Leon, we should be totally ready for alternate source of fuel.

As for us, we should try and get some fuel into those dry tanks of our vehicles (if there are ANY fuel stations with supplies still left, that is!).

I am in deep trouble, my classes begin today and I dont have enough fuel in both my vehicles. I am not regularly driving/riding since 18 Dec, so filled up according to the need(for eg 500 bucks worth fuel last sunday ).

With commuting for 60+ kms daily(Mon-Sat) begins from today I just have 10 litres in my van and close to 3.5 litres in bike which will last only this week in slow commuting mode.

Time to board DTC wish we had better public transport.

if any one has idea about any pump supplying fuel, post here or PM me, I dont wanna lose out crucial classes that to in the begenning of ther term

            I cant miss college

The Gas based units in NCR(Managed by NTPC) are already shut, and now Delhi ones, thankfully coal based plants generally have buffer stock for 15 days and wont be hampered with supplies so power shortage is expected, donno the extent though.

There hasnt been any power cut except for the regular roster in Noida.

              @Setuniket

Here in Bangalore, HP and Shell bunks are working normally. But there is a heavy rush as everybody are in line to get tanked up. Apart from these, You could also try the Essar or Reliance bunks in your city.

Almost all of Gurgaon pumps are DRY. Saw over half a km queue yesterday at Gold Souk pump for Speed 97!!!!!!HPCL 32nd milestone was shut yday night, and people were camping there overnight!

Pumps as afar as manesar are dry. The shani mandir pump near expressway end had been almost finishing petrol last night 11:30. The diesel ran out in front of my eyes. Its mad.

I think Manmohan singh should resign. The government can't guarantee anything in peacetime or in times of militancy. Hopeless creatures

guys, Yesterday noon I heard in the TV a statement from HPCL that their pumps are not effected by the strike and they have their supplies going on.

I went to Secunderabad in the evening and came back. All BPCL pumps were out of stock, all HPCL were serving customers, most IOCL were serving customers and a few were closed.

                  Hope this is useful.

Even i spent close to an hour standing in the queue to get those precious few litres of petrol, but i hope that by the weekend situation will get back to normal.

And yes HPCL petrol pumps are working, yesterday while standing in the queue, HPCL PP guys told us that have already ordered 20k+20k litres of extra supply and they will be operational on routine basis.

This above mentioned PP is situated at apsara border.

@Bandhav: Yes, while commuting to work, I saw a couple of HPCL pumps still functioning like normal, although the que of vehicles seemed to getting longer by the minute!

P.S: I haven't got my bike to work today, took the public transport. Although I have sufficient fuel in my bike's tank, but just want to save it for the weekend, just in case this bloody strike goes on forever which I highly doubt!

I still have enough gas in my bike to last for another 100 km at least. Anyways This is what happens when you have government run utilities. Maybe its time for them to divest and for all the companies to privatize. Yes prices will be more but competition is good and more outside companies can come in.Back home in the us..never once have i expierenced a fuel shortage .

                          Am out of fuel

Just today my R15's fuel gauge has started blinking. I still have around 30 litres of Diesel in my car, so thats fine. Just opposite my office is a SHELL bunk and I thought of filling up. But seeing a queue that stood for almost 2 kms, I junked the idea. The worst part is that am getting my RTR Fi today and I do not know where to get fuel. I do not know if I should feel happy for the RTR or sad about this fuel state. Gotta check HPCL and SHELL bunks in the afternoon time.

@Leon : Totally agree with the alternate fuels and stuff, but thats atleast the status of tomorrow. What will be the status today with our regular fossil-fuel powered vehicles running out of fuel?

@RedApple: In such cases u can forget about subsidies man. During the hey-days Petrol will be sold for 100 a litre and diesel for 50 a litre. Can u live with it?

Got it filled for 300 bucks though i waited for 20 min. should last me till the end of next week with my 30+kms riding everyday. This is reallly scary. Autos are running on double meter. veggies have become 20% more expensive and to top it all, there is a dam lorry strike in Bangalore now...
