Sorry for the delay in the post, but almost forgot about this thread after becoming pet-parent.

Preface : I already gave advance to an Uncle who has a pet shop, her daughter is a good friend of mine and they had a lab earlier, so I had full faith on them. I wanted yellow/golden but being non-mating season, they were not sure which one would be there, But I was ok with any color. At home I didnt tell anything, all I told them was that one fine day, I will come home with a new four legged member.

January 27, 2015 : After completing a 3 day marriage shoot, me and my friend decided to go for a movie. And on the same day I knew that the pup would come at my friend's place. But due to some time issues, it was delayed. So carried on with the movie. As the movie got over, my friend called me and said that the pup has come, it was around 10pm. I rushed to home with my friend, grabbed some warm clothes to wrap him up and straight went to meet the pup.

Here is the first time I saw him (Link) I have already decided on the name BUDDY for him. To my surprise she managed to get hold of a yellow colored lab pup.

He was 30 days old. I know I went little early here, as he should have been with his mother till 45days at least.

Came back home and mom and dad was in a state of happy shock as they saw this cute lil thing. Mom quickly made a small carton box as his sleeping / resting area all stuffed with warm clothes and his toys.

He relived himself in the home numerous times, but I was ok with it. Wiped it, cleaned the place and again started playing with him.
Around 11.30 he went to sleep on my bed, the whole night he slept with me on my chest. I didn't sleep the first night.


For the next few days , friends came and visited him once in a while. He was getting habituated of people around him.
But after 10days, one fine morning he didnt eat his breakfast, neither his lunch. All he ate was just some one or twice from the bowl. His stool was all green and liquid. I was tensed so very next morning took him to a vet. In the mean time his poop also had blood in it.

Clicked the photos and showed them to the vet. He diagnosed him with Parvo Virus, one of the fatal and common viral among puppies.

I was depressed and sad watching Buddy loose weight and appetite. I just wanted him to come out of it. The vet said that he would be given glocose drip twice a day and medication that would be little costly, for the next 10days. If he survives the next 10days, he will come out of it. I was not concerned for the money, all I wanted was that he comes out of this.
For the next 10days, went to vet twice in a day, get the glucose drip for him alongwith the injections.

Touchwood, Buddy was fit and fine by the end of 8th day, he started to gain weight, started to have food and no blood in his poop.

He took almost a month to get in shape but he did it.

All these days, me and mom slept in shifts with him just to check if he is ok or not, and to clean if he was unable to control.

Current Day : He is 5 months and 10days old , weighs around 20kgs and is fit and fine. Too naughty, wants food everytime, gets too excited with the mention of walking and playing. He is an important part of our life now. Mom and dad are equally fond of him.

Its true "A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself."

He's 8 months now, and growing big! He can differentiate between engine sounds . Knows the CBR from the AS200 and our car. If he hears the CBR, he knows it's me, the AS my brother, and the car, our mum.

Surprisingly, he hates getting into cars, but will happily sit on the bike! I put him in between the tank and myself, and once on the run, he leans back into me and completely enjoys the ride! I've only taken him within our colony though...

We lost my friend's pup to parvo... My friend and I took care of her on shifts as well. I can understand the sadness, seeing a living being disappear in front of our eyes.

Aah dont remind me of parvo, I know what me and buddy went through in those 10days.
Mine (almost 7months) also knows my bike sound, he even knows the time when mom comes back or when I would be back from gym, sixth sense I guess. Buddy was initially hesitant in car drives, havent taken him on bike ride yet. Little scared of him falling off.

I found this thread at the right time. I am planning to adopt a pet dog from nearest NGO or through some known contacts. I think I am ready to have a pet as I am moving to a bigger place in 6 months and also there won't be any trouble from neighbors. This has been my major concern and now it's gone! I was a only-child and ever since childhood I felt lonely at home. I had friends who were just like me but they had pet dogs. I have seen them having an emotional bond with those animals. As children, whenever they couldn't express even their happiness to people, I have seen them sharing their happiness with their pets. I always wanted to pet an interactive animal, esp dogs, and I feel my parents would finally allow me to do it now without bringing in any restriction.

Before adopting I would like to thoroughly know the consequences of petting one. At present there are three mongrel pups in my compound and they take shelter and eat the food that we provide in our home daily. They have become more like pets but the problem is that they do not wish to be collared or tamed. They like going out of the street in day time and only come home for food and a good night's sleep. They are playful at times and that doesn't last longer. In short, they don't seem to be loyal and I possibly couldn't pet one of them. But what attracts me the most is that the ease of maintenance of these pups. They're practically free from all kinds of vaccinations and they take care of themselves very well. But I still fear that they are more prone to contract diseases and bugs easily due to their YOLO attitude and THUG lifestyle.

I have a few breeds in my mind. They are mostly bear hounds. I like Great Danes. I also like Labradors but I feel they've become really common. I have heard that it is good for our climatic conditions, especially for Chennai's. I am okay with cross-breed pups and I basically want a bear hound type pup which can be loyal and withstand the climatic conditions here. I have had neighbors who petted Dalmations but they suffered severely during summer. I don't want to immediately get a dog without knowing all this and let it suffer/die in my own hands. This is also the reason why I don't want to get a Great Dane immediately. Otherwise, I just love it for it's built and loyalty.

Please provide me with a list of breeds which match these qualities. Other than this, I will obviously take good care of it with proper vaccinations and other needs. I now feel that my parents also need one as they're becoming old and I stay out of the house most of the time in a day. They are finally okay with the idea of having a pet and are ready to bear the monetary expenses as well.

Dont get a pet dog just to fill that gap of loneliness , yes, it is one of the reasons, but its not the "only reason". Having a dog is like having a baby of your own, you have to give your whole lot of time to it. There would be restrictions that would come with it, like one needs to be there all the time with him, his food and water should be timely, training, vaccinations, its an "on-time" and serious thing.

Mongrel / Indian breeds if trained well can be the best of pets, but if they are there for food and shelter, your job is half done, yes they dont like being collared, they are animals, being free is their right (not to forget, those collars can be harsh on them), Mine roams freely in the house 24hours, its only during walk, that I use a leash, that too a body collar, I dont want to hurt him with a tight collar around his neck.
Vaccination is a must for any pet dog even if you are taking care of a street one, make sure he gets the basic anti rabies and anti parvo vaccines. I am associated with a Animal Care and we vaccinate street dogs depending upon the funds available.

Now coming to the breeds : It would be great if you adopt a street dog/pup, you would actually be giving life to it. I wish I could get one, but my house-size doesnt allow.
The breed of the dog should always depend on the size of the home you would provide him , not to forget the food costs too (Will come to this later)
Great Dane were/are basically hunting dogs, they need ample amount of space for running and exercise, same goes with Dalmatian and other Huge Breeds.
Labradors are big too when they are in adult life, so again the space does play an important role, in their growth.
Small breeds like beagle, spitz, daschund,pug etc are good for small/medium homes.

Next comes grooming, there are dogs which require less grooming (one that have single coat) whereas others require it quite frequently, like labra, golden retriever, etc.

Then come what type of dog you are looking for, will it be companion dog, a guard dog or show dog (I dont like to call them this)
Lab, Golden Retriver : These fall under companion dogs
German Shepherd, Rottweiler : They are guard dogs, Rotts are one of the dangerous breeds, so be careful with it.
Small breeds come under the last part, beagle being an exception , it can be a good companion dog.

Now comes the food, let me give you an example of my own Buddy, when I brought it home, I was pre decided that I wont give it Pedigree as it has leftovers which are not that beneficial. I opted for Royal Canin, its one of the costliest, 1kg of puppy food cost Rs800 which would last max 10days if its almost 3-4 months, so per month it would come to around 4000 including treats and other food items. I gave him Royal Canin in his first 3 months and then moved to Drools (3kg cost Rs500).
This breakup is just for a lab pup, the bigger the breed the bigger the cost.

Vaccination cost around 250Rs per injection here, and injections are regular till 6 months and then the frequency is less, anti rabies is mandatory every year or two (not sure which one).

Now coming from parent's point of view. Few pointers here for you, are they available when you are not there? If yes, can they do all the work associated with the dog (household accident cleaning being the main), Are they comfortable with the shedding they would have? Who will take it for walks? People visiting your home often, needs to taken care of, people sometime do avoid going to homes where there is a dog, just because they are scared of it (stupid reason imo). can they sustain his initial biting and teething?

These are just some of the points, if something else comes across will post it.

If you are ready for all this, then go ahead and add a new family member.

Let me answer the questions from last. My parents said no earlier because they would not do all that you mentioned. Now they're ready for it. Atleast one of them always stays home and is ready to take care of its breakfast, lunch and also dinner. I am going to take it for a walk when I'm home in the evening and one of my parents will do it in the morning/afternoon for sure. The dog should be a great security to them.

The dog's healthcare and food will never be a problem. There can't be a better time for my family to spend on a dog's health needs! Following a timetable for vaccinations will also not be a problem.

Now let me tell you why I want a great dane. It provides great security. Since I am moving to a bigger place it can be raised there. There will be space for it to stretch and jump outside. I happened to talk to a few people I know who own a great dane. They say it can play inside the house as a pup and it won't bother anyone much. But around 6 months, it would become nearly 3/4 of it's full height and will definitely break stuff as it plays inside. Not only that, they complain about the toughness involved in maintaining it in summer. It easily gets tired because of the heat and always wants to sit inside the house where there is less space for it's full size. Now I absolutely want to think another time before considering it once again.

I was fond of beagle but again I am doubtful if it would withstand the summer and it will definitely demand some special attention. Also I don't think it's so good as a guard dog. Alsatian/german sheperd, rottweiler, pitbull etc don't actually attract me. Plus, they're so exotic and I don't want to tame one and let them deal with the climate here. I don't think such mainstream guard dogs are necessary for my house at present.

I am interested in taking a mongrel pup home but they're mostly sight hound and they don't attract me much. Their built is often petite too. I would like to visit NGOs where they know that a specific pup is a cross of a guard dog and a mongrel. That way, I can have a dog which will be easy to maintain and also provide the security and companionship needed.

I will be getting a full body collar and I personally feel that it looks great on a labrador with creamy skin colour. I have around 6 months of time and I would like to know other breeds too so that I can find the one that suits me.

I know it feels like a new family member and I don't mind diverting most of my attention to it!

Loved the line saying to give a life to s street dog... I too have a street pup and very happy with him.

Are you sure your parents can handle its jumping, because of what I have read in all these years, old people wont be able to handle it.

As per my view German Shepherd is the best guard dog and easily trainable.
No dog can sustain extreme heat, and beagle is no exception, its double coat is water resistant just as Labrador.

Go through these once more, and think from heart and mind both, dont just go with "on the spot" decision, its a matter of his life and your 13 years of time.

Yep I know great dane is exotic too. But I see them more friendly for home as compared to german shepherd, rottweiler and pitbulls which need constant training from pup to bigger age. Thats why I had mentioned that I don't require an outright guard dog. And regarding the the jumping part, my parents aren't too old. They like great danes and in fact wanted one before I did as they had seen it earlier in my neighborhood. I found from owners of many dogs that jumping and other activities can be avoided if they're trained not to do right from pup stage. Looks is my personal preference and I never said that any other dog is not good looking. It's just that I am attracted more to these dogs first. I like how labradors look too but they are in every house I can find, having pets! If there is any other breed that suits me, I will get it and that's why I still want to know more about mongrels whose looks are in no way related to the breeds I have mentioned as my preference. I have lived next to a neighbor who had a great dane for 7 years and I am familiar to its activities. It's easier to maintain compared to german shepherd as a family and guard dog. Needs more space though! I am familiar with with labrador and pomeranian as well as they were part of my neighborhood.

I have to get to know more about german shepherd from direct owners. I also want to consider golden retriever in that case as it is furry too. Needs more space though! I am familiar with with labrador and pomeranian as well as they were part of my neighborhood.

Secondly, what others tell you is their personal way, when it comes to you, it would be different. You two are different persons with different life style. So whats easy for them may not be easy for you.

Apart from looks, availability and finding a genuine breeder of exotic dogs is rare, people have been sold cross breeds in the name of pure bred.

one of my dog owner friends also suggested german sheperd and golden retriever. Aren't their fur harmful for them in hot conditions during summer?

Sometimes I wonder how they manage to stay cold during hot summer days.

Anyway, I am going to this place called SPCA during weekend to pet a few dogs there. I will get to know them better that way! There are some dog experts at that place.

one of my dog owner friends also suggested german sheperd and golden retriever. Aren't their fur harmful for them in hot conditions during summer?

Sometimes I wonder how they manage to stay cold during hot summer days.

Anyway, I am going to this place called SPCA during weekend to pet a few dogs there. I will get to know them better that way! There are some dog experts at that place.

The fur does effect it but the breed has adapted itself as per Indian climate, one of my close friends have a female German Shepherd, after walking / playing when it goes back to home, it quenches its thirst, take a small rest in front of ac or cold area and gets back to normal. My buddy does the same.
