Canon 550D/Nokon D5000/D3000 would be good starter DSLRs. They are one level above their starting level and have features taken from their bigger siblings. You can start with their kit lens and as you shoot you'll relaize which focal lengths you lack or require and can invest in lenses. I must warn you that if you that if you get serious it can burn your pockets pretty quick! ;-)

          just want for learning
Personally i would suggest you to start with Point and shoot ( as you said, for learning). get a good point and shoot with all manual features, set your hand, understand basic terms, work on the processing stuff and then invest in DSLR.
As there is a saying " Buying a DSLR, won't make you a Photographer, but only a DSLR owner (Aryan da )"
And then invest in Good DSLRs like 450D/500D/550D. (End of game? no, the game has just begin, now comes the main thing lenses, confused..?)
Taking a long jump isn't that easy

And if you already own one ( Point and shoot ) then why this statement "just want for learning"...?

          BDW answer to your question.
For learning you can pick D3000/1000D

          Varun

I even play with my Scale Models

          2006- HONDA DIO
          2007- BAJAJ PLATINA (sold)
          2008- YAMAHA YZF R15
201*- HONDA SBK (some day :D)

            • @Sherry: Care to share the kind of equipment that you used for creating those photographs?

@Manan: It's not about being "wanting to be a professional" or not. It's got more to do with the kind of usage that you see yourself putting in with a D-SLR. Getting different arsenal of lenses is the main expenditure. You would eventually find out that the "kit" lens (the EF-S 18-55mm) has some limitations. Then, you would hunt for other lenses, and that is how you would end up spending a considerable amount of money in the lenses, filters, et al.

That is why getting a digital camera would serve you perfectly, atleast since you are starting out. This is my personal opinion. Atleast, that is how I started out 7 years back!

The Fujifilm 2000 is a decently good camera, although I would like to know why do you feel that the Samsung camera is bad? Is it because of the IQ (Image Quality) or some other parameter(s)?

I have been using a Canon Powershot S3 IS digital camera since the last 3.5 years or thereabouts. Although, I won't really be the right person to suggest you any particular brand of camera, but if it's Canon you are looking for, I can give an opinion or two.
                  :)

I will recommend you the following:

                      EOS 550 D 18-55 kit,18MP -Rs 47 k

550D is a superb product. Got full HD (1080p) 30 fps video recording as well.

@Manan: If you are hell-bent on getting a D-SLR, then get the EOS 1000D, but I would suggest you get a nice prosumer camera/ bridge camera which would, I believe, satisfy your needs in a wonderful way.

But IMO a super zoomer is not camparable to the very basic of DSLRs(100D).
A high end point and shoot will cost about 34 k to get a 10 mp cmos and some creative control over the shots(Powershot 1IS ),cams like p90 is not comparable. And a fixed lens.

but the tele in excess of 560 mm is cool.

                            but at 25 k 1000d sounds better.
especially if one cannot upgrade the cam very frequently.

                            • @Koch: Upgrading a cam frequently is not the question. The question is getting newer lenses. Getting an arsenal of lenses would eventually cost you a LOT more than getting a prosumer camera. Moreover, there are many digi-cams that do not cost an arm and a leg!

However, at the end of the day, it all depends on the one who is investing his/ her money. They should be the one to judge whether getting a 1000D/ or any other model is well worth their money and the effort.

oh, yeah, you are true. its just my opinion.
I know its not cheap to get a big array of quality stabilized lenses.
But a real enthusiast can never bury himself under a kiddish ccd sensor and fixed lens for long.

My preferred set up: will buy a 550 D body or 18-55 kit, and borrow a 300 mm tele and probably a wide angle when needed from my friends who have a good collection to play with

                                just my opinion.
