After making the post above, I decided to try checking out how actually geotagging of photos taken with my N82 works. I had to get the latest share online app, download settings from flickr, activate my account and make a few test uploads before things started working.

Here is a grab shot I took of chintu_sbk on the last G2G at the xBhp dhabha in front of fore school of mgmt.

Click on the image above to see the image on flickr and click on the map button on the flickr page to see the location of xbhp dhabha. You can select satellite view and get some pretty detailed satellite view of the area.

Here is the method I followed:
        1. Downloaded and Installed Nokia Sharing and blogging app from: Nokia Europe - Sharing & blogging - Support - to do the download, i started it on the pc and then copy/pasted the URL as a sms to my phone. You can always download the appropriate version on the pc and then send it to the phone using PC suite. I do not have PC suite on my current comp and with WiFi the phone does not take much time to do the downloads directly.

        2. Went to the flickr nokia help site from my phone's web browser and downloaded the cfg file directly on the phone. The URL is: Flickr: Help: Nokia and Flickr <-- this url asks you to follow a more complicated method, but on my N82, just clicking on the download link for the Nokia configuration file installed and activated flickr as a service on my phone. This is the help page for using Nokia phones to directly upload on flickr. And the configuration file is provided in the answer to the question: I don't see Flickr listed as an option on my Nseries device. What do I do?

        3. Went to the gallery on the phone, opened the last photo and went to options/open online service to start the Nokia Share Online app.

        4. Selected flickr as a service and logged onto my yahoo account using the phone's web browser. At one point the web browser got stuck and i had to ask the phone to reload the page.

        5. Once I got logged on, flickr activated nokia uploading on my account and sent another configuration file. This saved the settings for the configuration file on my phone.

        6. Found this photo and clicked on the upload to flickr button shown on the right hand side of the phone - this has buttons for delete, send, print, etc..

This whole process took a bit of time as the guide on Nokia's site mentions flickr as an available service, while my phone refused to find it as an available service. A bit of googling brought up a few pages + some basic common sense got this procedure.

The sharing app by default uploads images at 640x480, which is small size. One can try uploading at medium or original size, but eve 640x480 files are around 60-100kb and that takes up a bit of time when using GPRS. Using WiFi, this is much much faster!

PS1: Sunny, how do I disable the forum from automatically putting the link target page's title in the post? This can end up eating valuable server resources also.
PS2: I am using a N82, the procedure might not be same on the N73, but I do not think it would be significantly different. Check out the guide on the link to the nokia sharing and blogging site for details on how to go about doing it on your phone.

How to access internet on my Wi-Fi Mobile through my Wi-Fi PC/Lappy

I was thinking today if I can use my N95 mobile to browse the internet through my Laptop. I am not sure if anyone has tried this or not but I thought it would be great if I can find some way to do that since my mobile is Wi-Fi enabled and my Laptop too. I am using internet through a cable and thought of utilising my Laptop wi-fi to share that connection with my N95. So, I googled and found it.

I followed the instructions here - How to Access Internet on your mobile through PC and ...WALLAAAAA...It's on . Now, I can access internet through my mobile around my house without worrying for the data charge from Airtel . And moreover, it is damn fast than the GPRS. So, which site I am hitting first? YOUTUBE !!!

If you have a laptop with WiFi and get your internet using some broadband provider, then why not get yourself a WiFi router. Then you can use both the laptop and phone around the house. Nowadays most broadband providers give a WiFi router for around 500-1000 rupees extra when you take the connection. Alternatively you can buy a WiFi router for around 1800 from nehru place.

As far as youtube is concerned, you can also try hooking the phone to a TV and then checking out the youtube clips on the TV. I did this a few times till the novelty wore off, but it is sure a nice way to check out youtube

PS: I suppose you already know how to use the phone as a modem for your laptop with a data cable or bluetooth connection.
PS2: Airtel has a relatively unlimited GPRS plan available. Depending on your negotiating skills, you can get it between 250-599 rupees per month if you have a postpaid account. This is quite a lifesaver if you need to use the net at odd places but not often enough to justify purchase of a data card.

Why to invest into making this all work when I have already achieved it at ZERO additional cost?

Well.. you should check out the flexiblity of using a laptop with WiFi! You can use it anywhere in or around the house. I frequently take the laptop to the bed, to the terrace, balcony, across rooms @ home and all this is because of the WiFi router. Also I do not need to ensure that the internet connection is situated anywhere near my laptop. The WiFi router was the first thing I bought after I got a laptop with WiFi and I have not regretted spending the cash for one bit.

Having a WiFi access point allows me to log on to the home network using the phone w/o having the laptop around or switched on. My WiFi router and DSL router run 24/7!

Also I do not know if you can use WPA when doing peer to peer WiFi connections. I would never use a WiFi network w/o WPA encryption. WEP is very weak and having no security is an invitation for terrorists and other freeloaders to use your net connection for free..

Thanks. But I not sure how the N73 will be able to geotag since it doesnt have a GPS. It can only happen in the GPRS packets are used to detect the physical location, which I think is not possible too.

I guess I already made my point clear. It is about utilizing the resources that I have to their maximum capability without investing anything. What you are telling me is not what I want. We can get zillions of gadgets around us to do things. We can get dozens of SANs, 50 type of secure routers and 100s of network switches. But, this thread is about mobiles. And, that was my actual point to specify something that we can do with our Wi-Fi mobile. Hope it clears the confusion.

@Sunny: I believe there is an alternative way to geotag on a non-gps enabled mobile. You will need an external bluetooth GPS however to do so. Check out this link Nokia Location Tagger. It has been tested with N73 too. Maybe it will help.

The N73 can not geo tag w/o an external BT GPS unit. IMO too cumbersome. But you can definitely post using gprs connection directly to flickr. This in itself is a nice way to keep people posted during trips.

You can also do the geo tagging offline by syncing the track logs from a GPS unit with the time of your phone/camera. There are quite a few software available to geotag photos using this method. But in that case you will have to geotag on the computer and upload from the computer. Something I have never really felt worth the effort. This method is plain effortless which is where the beauty lies..

One more thing i forgot to mention, in my flickr account i had to enable geographic locations from the exif data. By default, i think it is disabled on flickr.

I get your point about making more use of existing equipment, but my point was if you had considered getting a WiFi router, esp since it is virtually free these days.. I always advice anyone with a WiFi enabled laptop to at least try out WiFi at other places and then to decide for yourself..

BTW.. why would I require dozens of SANs, 50 types of secure routers and 100s of network switches? Even big datacenters would not require that many Storage boxes, routers and switches

We can discuss that in the PC thread. And talking about their need in datacenters well there is no limit to extending our resources. From mobile you went to laptop and then wi-fi routers. I just pushed it a little more ahead than you were thinking. Hope you get my point, again.

Shucks!! This is the second time in the last 18 months that my cell got stolen. Previously, N91 4 GB, and now goes the SE K790i. This made me decide that I gotta stick to basic phones from now on.

So I rounded up the choices and found Motorola W270 as the safest bet. Got a music player, and I don't need a camera cell right now. If anyone has used the W270, please comment on the music quality, headset comfort and the menu feel; I've used a RAZR and it's menu system is bakwaas, but I can live with it if the music player is OK.

Hehe.. i'm in a similar situation as yours.. my phone died and I did'nt want to put my money into the current high end sets.. got myself a W270.

The music quality is average, the bundled headphones are crappy and dont fit me right. Since its a basic phone the menu options are less in number and managable. There are enough hotkeys (9) from the home screen to take you to most used options, so thats a boon.

Battery life is so so.. but it uses USB port for charging so I can get one anywhere I want. I've bought a cheap handsfree set to cut it open and use it with a better earphone, it should then be ok.

Overall a manageable basic phone. You can also look at phones that are priced about a thousand more that come with bluetooth and vga camera. I wanted a sub-3k phone so stuck to this.
