I guess Google Maps and other freeware require GPRS connection, which can be a limitation in areas with low coverage.

That stuff from mapmyindia is for GPS receivers...I doubt if it can be used on Nokia handsets.

Edit: guess i'm wrong...they are for Nokia as well...just checking out the coverage on their site

Can be used if your phone has an internal GPS reciever, else you can buy a small reciever from them itself!

yup google maps basically uses the GPS to pinpoint your location on the map that it downloads dynamically (Using a data connection GPRS/EDGE/others when they come to india). heck it can even be accurate without GPS (upto a radius of 1500mtrs in the city and theoretically within a radius of 30KM in the open(the max radius of GSM)) as it locates the tower you are connected to.

Map my India allows downloadable maps and depending on the detail of the map you are in safe hands. (But requires GPS to function (not a technical limitation as it too could bank on towers))

Let's see if I can start work on getting google maps to accept downloaded maps. I have read somewhere it is possible using the current APIs.

I've created maps for a Garmin as my college project using a total of 5 softwares. But I won't recommend them to you, there are doubts on the accuracy. I'll see the Nokia API and try loading some stuff there too, once I can grab the phone.

By the way, Motorola's offering comes with many maps from MapMyIndia preloaded, many more compared to Nokia's current. Will be seeing that set as an option too.

@Archi its possible to upload your own map using the current google map api but its not easy an you think , the images are cut using a tile cutter and it cuts the image into various sizes for various zoom levels. making use of this on a desktop / laptop / tablet pc is easy when it comes to a handheld device or mobile its going to be tricky .

The best phone that comes to my mind in that budget is the N78. It has everything you need.

                            Here is a review.
All About Symbian Review: Nokia N78 Review - Part 1: Hardware, Design and Connectivity

The battery here provide 1200mAh so it will last plenty too.
Oh yes its just under your budget.
