  • i'm guessing you've seen this already, its the same bike above and is now faster than when i took the below video.

Another 100 meters and i'd have crossed 150, but this is busy traffic...140 in just over 500 odd meters

Can you share the sprocket ratio used?

        • Got joels exhaust for my r15 a week ago, and i must say i am enjoying it to the core. Engine feels super revv friendly and free when compared to what it was with stock exhaust.
Havent done any mileage test yet, but considering that it was around 45 earlier even if there is a drop of say 5kmpl i would'nt mind.
Will post updates about it as they develop.
May soon be getting the big bore kit and ecu
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, 'Wow! What a Ride!' -Hunter S. Thompson

                  Not fully ‘Joeled’ R15

I started my mod a year and a half before by going big bang with 165cc big bore kit. My ride was reading ~29K in the ODO. I did post a write up with video and it was merged in R15 V1 ownership thread, and so it became unnoticed by most of our friends.
I had a wonderful experience riding the mean machine. P220s are no match and I use to have a win - win situation with CBR 250. (FYI, I weigh more than 90Kgs and I run with DB killer)
I am not a techie; I just wanted to share my experience where people would notice. Also our comments can contribute towards hot-rodding like most of other threads.
                  Details of 1st level Mod
                  • Big bore – 165cc
                  • FFE with DB killer
                  • Clutch springs
                  • Valve springs
                  • RR ECU
                  • RC Cam
                  • Simota air filter

Rode her from Chennai to Bangalore and got it done. Did a careful run-in and switched to synthetic oil (Motul 300v). There was initial cam noise that was annoying and it came down noticeably after run in. The noise is still present, but only little. The fuel economy was also relatively on the higher side.
The exhaust note has to be mentioned here. It is really music to ears with the DB killer. Without that it’s just very loud for me. As a lateral effect this exhaust sound makes you ride sanely inside city. Overall the ride experience was amazing. I did have a lot of misfire in lower rpms and higher rpms. It was little discomforting. Gave her to SVC and had the injector cleaned up, and there was no more misfiring like before, It became very rare and at only lower rpms
Did a test ride and uploaded a video when it was 165cc. I was running with DB killer, wing mirror, saree guard in place. I could duck only 50 – 60 % and of course did not do a professional launch. I presume I hit 100kmph ~9 sec.
Link to old video. (Excuse me for the poor quality)

                  R15 Acceleration1 (0-100Kmph) - SS - YouTube

As most of u guys reported, the cranking takes 2 more seconds and some more warm up time is also required for this setup. But after that, it is pure bliss.
After running like 3.5K kms, I was craving for more power and started asking Joel for more mods. Again took a very big leap and went for the following. (Rode to Bangalore again)
                  • Big bore ~180cc
                  • Bigger head
                  • Bigger valves
                  • Extra high flow air filter
                  • Hotter cam
                  • Bigger throttle body and intake manifold
                  • Front bigger petal discs, front and rear steel braided brake lines.

The moment I rode this set up I just loved this set up, it was tremendous. The ECU was tuned to this new set up and I took her to Chennai.

The torque it generated was extraordinary, Can u imagine riding a stock bike in 3-4K rpms in higher gears effortlessly, BIG NO. I sensed the biggest difference when riding in flyovers. I could see a huge improvement in acceleration. The feel of the engine was like a royal enfield (I am exaggerating). It was extra effortless and free revving. I did not time the acceleration with this set up.

I should have been able to get past CBR 250 comfortably, but I never got a chance to experience that.

My top speed in 165cc set up was struggling to cross 140(with me duckd on board->90Kgs), but with this set up I was able to cross 135+ sitting upright !!!. When ducked I could touch 145+. Unfortunately, I was able to ride her only for less than 2.5K kms. I had to go abroad for an assignment for around 7 months. I parked her inside my house unplugging the battery (already 4 years OLD). She was never touched during the seven months period.

Came back from abroad, replaced the fuel and engine oil. Plugged in a new battery and cranked. She started like I was riding her daily. I was happy to see her come to life.

I did have an unfinished business with RC, regarding the disc brake clamp for front petals. The front disc bite did not have 100% contacts when installed with the provided kit. The braking was very good though. I did opt for this as my stock discs were long due for replacement. Called up Joel, he told he will keep the new revised clamp ready when I come to him.
Fortunately, I got a new job offer in Bangalore and I was planning to relocate to Bangalore. Just as a casual discussion asked him for any more upgrades available!!!!!!(I must be NUTS, It was already a BOMB).

Visited his new shop. Decided to go for an upgrade. I had run around 3 K in this 180cc set up…
Gave him the ride for couple of days. The crank was found to be due for change, changed it to a new one along with the MOD. The following works were done.
                  • Racing rear sprockets and chain. (It’s slim and weighs very very less). I do not know the number of teeth.
                  • Front disc clamp was replaced and now the contact is very good. The braking improved. Still to improve after few kms because the old contact was different.
                  • Close ratio gear box!!!! Changed 3, 4, 5 and 6 to close ratio ones.
                  • New exhaust replaced because I wanted to go for the new stainless steel version although my old one only had minimal very rusts as it was parked mostly inside. The new exhaust is improved and it has better bassy sound to it. I’m running this without DB killer now…

It’s only few weeks old after the recent changes. As I am busy relocating, I am unable to enjoy much of its potential..

I have a huge performance improvement with this exhaust. With the close ratio gear box the acceleration is more quick and remarkable but the top speed is restricted to around 140KMPH. The 1st and 2nd have only a minimal change and after that it’s very close so that we stay in the power band always. I was able to cross 11.5 k rpm in 6th gear. It is ideal for city rides with tremendous acceleration. After 2 gears your exhaust note never changes!!! hehee..

If I can compare with CBR 250, I should be able to stay ahead of it till 140.

Last, but not the least. YES, I did spend a lot of dough. Should I have sold my nearly 5 year old R15, put some more money and gone for a CBR? Well it’s debatable as always. Hope the debate doesn’t happen here.

It feels good to get past biggies with an underdog. I have craving for more top speed also because I occasionally do trips to Chennai. I have asked Joel to revise the gearing and also inquired for any other upgrades!!!!!!!!!!.

After All these MODS, I suppose there is still room for getting Joeled. Will keep you guys posted. I have experienced close to 4K kms with the new 180 cc set up…….

Hope u get a place out here ASAP and please do post acceleration, top speed vids.

                    Cheers.

I have been running the 180cc block for the past 13 months, no issues with the block, currently test a map Joel had sent a little while back. As it stands I haven't gone for the large TB, Big valve head, new exhaust and close ratio box, these however are on the cards, hopefully soon, the 165cc block felt quicker than the 180cc as this requires the bigger valves for better output, the 180cc has nice torque low down, but has less power higher up, of course this will be resolved with the next upgrade, good fuel is a must!

Bread is known to be extremely addictive. Subjects deprived of bread and given only water, actually begged for bread after just two days !

It's good to know that Joel's setup on the r15's are going strong
Not the same in case of the FZ's. Looks like mine is the only one that went without a hitch.
Kinda boils down to the person who installs the setup. He needs to have good knowledge and we the biker need to do the rest in taking care for initial breakin period.

@Stefanm, I totally agree on the fuel part playing a very important role. I once filled up from a gas station outside city limits, the bike started knocking.
Came home and drained all the fuel, and filled it up with shell super and she was behaving well after that

Nice to know you are doing fine. How many KMS have you clocked?.. Bigger head ,TB valves will definitely make her breathe easy. Try extra free flow simota too.

165 cc feels faster?. Did you try to time both these set up?.I mean do you sense a markable difference..?... 165cc is a tight set up so it might feel faster I guess. I dont know..

I have only done around 6k on the 180cc, as I don't ride in the rains and do a lot of short journeys, the 180cc is restricted without the big valves and larger tb, the 165cc had a lot more pep at higher revs, the 180cc however has become very smooth and less vibey of late, but still needs these mods, hopefully in the next few months i'll do, along with a new exhaust. I already have the Simota air filter, though the air box is not modded, not sure if that is required. My bike was also not running for three months, one month for some mods and perpetually waiting for parts from Yamaha, one month for painting and a month diagnosing and repairing busted starter clutch and starter motor, i think most guys have gone through the starter clutch getting busted if running a cam without decompression (whether from Joel or anywhere else), however I've been running a different map from Joel, which seems to have less stress/kickback on cold starts, which I figure will put less stress on the starter clutch. One thing I do for the first start of the day, is put the bike in 6th gear push back until it locks and press start (after returning to neutral) I am currently working on having a custom made spark plug wire and cap from the US, I think this will eliminate some of the niggling issues I have been having with cold starts, though at the moment things are ok, the spark plug cap is pretty crap, I am on my 3rd, I had replaced 2 during the 2k kms i had ridden whilst the bike was stock.

IN simota there is additional extra free flow air filter also.. Initially during 165cc set up I had a simota free flow and then I changed to additional free flow simota filter.. If you have this then its OK, else check it out when u do the MOD.

I am using iridium spark plg.. nothing much in this area..
