Tata Nano Launched - Will it hurt Bikes?
Collapse
X

Yes It will hit the bike market and where it hurts the most, especially sub 150 cc segment. Those who can afford will buy it in long term loans(~5 year loans) and instalment being equal to bikes. Butttt it will take time, lakh nano's for now is nothing.
OTOH I want it to hit the market very-very hard and make sure some companies suffer hefty losses, hit margin and sales badly, this will force companies to focus not on mileage but performance oriented products.
and maybe we can get to ride 250's and 600's sooner. BAL, YMIL & HMSI listening

1.In one of the press releases it was told that no version of nano will be given out for taxis , its a car for the masses and would not be used as taxis.
2.With people going in for nano who used to buy 150-223 cc bike for commuting , the bike market will look forward to catering the needs of the enthusiasts only
.100cc cummuter segment will stay since the fuel cost, maintenance , insurance , initial investment will be very less as compared to Nano.
3.Traffic is going to be a big problem in all the cities.Highway traffic should be unaffected so bikers need not worry much
.
Am i being too optimistic?

Ahh, Nano-I expected this thread to come up soon! I feel a biker buys a bike because he wants to travel on a bike! Thats one reason why the big bike market in India is growing by leaps&bounds, whereas car market is going towards smaller&smaller cars.
That aside, Nano is for sure going to hit the used cars, as well as entry level car market. It is a blessing for the families which did not buy a family car because their budget ended at around 1.5lakhs, or they did not want to go in for a 2nd hand car. Also for people who basically want a low cost (the lowest cost) 4 wheel commuting option.
But it is sure a curse to the already overcrowded city roads!
P.S. @Aryan, I'm in the market for the Ninja 250 too. Got bored of even watching the videos on YouTube. Just wanna see it in the flesh now!
Quench my thirst with gasoline!

a car can never give you the kinda rush a bike gives....(save for the FERRARI"S,LAMBO'S,PAGANI'S,ASTONS ETC).......
BUT STILL ITS VERY GOOD CAR FOR THE PEOPLE WHO MOVES THEIR FAMILY ON TWO WHEELS......THUMBS UP TO MR. TATA FOR GIVIN US INDIANS CAR SO CHEAP....
As for me i'd rather be drivin an R15 than NANO for almost the same cost.......

The autos always command huge premiums, and most of the time sold in black, as the demand is on the higher side, the landing cost is way higher than 1.5 lacs.Originally posted by prabhubravo View Postwell I felt it will replace the autos..
a new auto costs 1.5L apprx
so they might prefer a 'car' to an auto
Niks has already stated it, nano wont be available for the commercial use purpose.Originally posted by inder.cool View PostYaar izzat nahi hai kya 'Nano' ki ... that they wud b used for Autos..!!
Look at the bigger picture dude, it will provide the people with greater mobility. E.g, In Delhi NCR, people wont mind moving towards the outer areas like bhiwadi, meerut which was not the case earlier. The launch of car like nano will increase the geographical boundary of a city in a different way altogather.Originally posted by torque_ankur View PostLaunch of nano is a great news, but I think it might affect traffic condition, since its price is low so this will flood the roads with Nano, thus increaseing the traffic density.

Perhaps nano launch will filter the "Bikers" market. Only high segment bikes will be seen with the bike enthusiast.
So any potential Nano buyers on xBHP?

1 year down the line:
Nano gradually starts notching up good sales as its production increases.
100-150cc Segment = People will start holding off purchases, but sales wont be hit much.
150-223cc Segment = Nothing would change. A few cash rich dads might hold off their sons R15s and 220s. They will say " Son, i will get you a car!! "
Scooter Segment = Will start taking hits as parents would start buying Nanos for their girls. Obvious enough!!
SBK Segment = What!! Nano.. Get a life
5 years down the line:
Nanos would be everywhere.
100-150cc Segment = Bike makers will finally feel the pinch. Only the frugal 100cc guys doing 100km to a litre will survive. The executive segment would be the "Exotic bikes segment"
150-223cc Segment = The enthusiasts will keep on riding. XBhp will keep on growing. HH will realize that Karizma R/S/T/U/V/W/X wont do the trick.
Bajaj will finally get the Ninja 250R
TVS Menace will finally make it to the showrooms
Scooter Segment = Only scooterrettes will survive. To be driven by children going to schools.
SBK Segment = What!! Nano !! Get a life
PS: Dhoom 6 on a Nano

Sir Jee I fully agree with you but the I regularly face the messy, over crowded traffic from delhi -gurgaon. Thats why I said that.Originally posted by BANDHAV View PostLook at the bigger picture dude, it will provide the people with greater mobility. ya, the first set of nanos is not for commercial purpose, but down the line it must be available.
Im sorry if I made you feel that I dont ve the 'izzat' for nano, Or is riding an auto humbe?Originally posted by inder.coolYaar izzat nahi hai kya 'Nano' ki ... that they wud b used for Autos..!!
I had a friendly talk with most of the auto drivers(ofcourse not all autos but the ones which I rented)about owning a nano and from that, they will prefer to own/ride a 'cab' instead of an auto, so that get little more or same mileage but more profit(as cab metres run faster than auto's)
well, me too gonna book or compete for the nano, so that we can bring my granni faster to the hospital in case of emergency(touch wood), instead wait for the cab to reach the village and then take her.Last edited by prabhubravo; 04-03-2009, 07:19 PM.

I believe that Nano will hurt bikes a BIT after 2 years from now. Nano's price is 1.3 Lacs+, and it is for commuters. Commuter bikes are at 25% of Nano's cost.Originally posted by prabhubravo View PostOur family friend who bought another auto recently said he paid 1.5L for it.

So, for Nano to become a challenge to commuter bikes, it has to drop down to 60k something... Which will happen in 2nd Hand market, after 2 years from now onwards...---
