I don't think it will hamper the bike market as being speculated. I think people who are going for Maruti 800/Alto will go for Nano now. They are getting a similar car for a lesser price. Regarding flooding of roads with Nano, I highly doubt it though it will definitely let the families to push their budget a bit and get "The Car" but not many.

Precisely the reason it could flood the roads! Initially, because of the production and the waiting period, that might not be the case, but say some-time (6 months to 1 year) down the line, there WILL be quite a few Nanos on the road, which can make life difficult in the already choked to death roads of our country.

People who bought a bike just for commuting (and also because they could not, perhaps afford a car) will definitely shift to the Nano, apart from having a bike for general commuting as well.

Anyhow, the future of Nano remains to be seen.
          :)

I still doubt the "flood" thing.

Tata Nano will not hit the premium bike market, but the basic bike market. Some person who has saved money for years to buy a new bike and has thought that it might be better to save some more and buy a car, Nano is a perfect vehicle. Rest assured even if the Nano is a problem for everybody, Bikers have a reason to smile i.e. then only true bikers will ride two wheels less posers etc.

In my opinion we still don't have the proper infrastructure for it.. Even when there aren't Nanos in the street yet, we crawl inch-by-inch in case of traffic jams... so, we can just imagine what happens when Nano is out in lots.. I am not a critic of Nano, I indeed admire and respect TATA for caring for the nation and it's citizens with least profit motive (from what I see)..

Nanos hitting Hero Honda or two-wheelers in general, I don't think so.. coz bikes give ease to move in traffic.. For daily office/ college commute bikes/ two-wheelers will still be preferred, as being on time matters.. However, for family people who would like to goto restaurants and other in-town trips, like visiting someone, they'll prefer Nano more than other people..

It is just second-hand car market which going to get the hit most, then some on two-wheeler market.. And, anyhow.. there is still time for Nano to be available in ready-stock..

IMO, the people who are the major buyers of Hero Honda.. for them, Rs. 100k is still out of reach...

Though, I feel it will affect Hero Cycle (Not Hero Honda) in a positive way.. after some much clog in the roads, people will turn back to cycles and the sales might rise.. Then.. Brijmohan Lal Munjal could proudly say to Mr. Toshiaki Nakagawa to get lost... have had enough of your stickers and paint..

The initial bookings for the Nano haven't been too encouraging. Tepid is the word. In spite of the very encouraging reviews, everybody seems to be waiting and watching as to how the car will turn out on the road. Here in Bangalore, only a few hundred booking forms have been sold by Concorde motors. The guys at Concorde told me that they expect bookings to pick up once test drives are offered. But all this is a far cry from the huge clamour most of us expected for the Nano. Hope things pick up soon. Meanwhile, I checked the Nano out yesterday at Concorde and the car looks neat and the finish was very decent. It is real tall though and the interiors were pretty nice except ofcourse the spartan plasticky dash. Heck what was I expecting for two petis? The price will come upto 2L for the top end LX version. With power windows, central locking , etc it looks like a great deal but it will be 35 kilos heavier than the other lower versions. So there might be some grunt lost which is not very enticing. My dad asked me whether we'll book one or wait to see the response. I'm confused. On one hand the car will make for a great city commuter but I'm still wary of Tata's quality levels. If it turns out to be good, we'll have had a great bargain and a nice city runabout. If we don't book now, we might have to wait for real long. So I'm kind of sitting on the fence right now. I feel like going for it just to drive something so unique and so radical. My buddy who works for Taco has driven the car for almost an hour and he says that it is a little noisy, though more like a air cooled Beetle burbling. Actually I like the old beetle's burble . Apart from that he said that it drives real well and there is decent "pulling", just like a M800/Alto. And he is putting money where his mouth is, just to drive the revolution and support Ratan Tata's huge idea. And he's pushing me to buy one. A pretty convincing argument from a very reliable source. So, I guess I'l bite the bullet once I get to take out a Nano for a short spin. Talking of which, no one at Concorde is real sure as to when they will offer test drives. Let's see how it pans out. Now, I wish we could get the 600c twin for a bike project. And will we get a Pete's kit or something like that to bump it up a bit and have some real fun?

We will also need a state of the art junkyard in all cities with automated car crushers and metal grinders as they have in the west....

Nano will definitely be a HIT amongst college goers ... The craze for bikes no longer exists amongst college students... College students are buying bikes just because cars are much more costlier.. Of course there are few exceptions...

^^ I think the college students would much prefer a Xing which would come around that price rather than going for a Nano simply because it is a better car.

I don't know the fate of the Nano, but all I can say is the second hand market is going to take a good hit because of it. Expect prices to drop.
