had only one crash till date..
1)never ride behind a bigger vehicle at high speeds, even if the car is moving fast. he can stop faster because he has four tyres and more traction.
i was behind a scorpio when he was doing around 80. he suddenly braked and so did i. but i embraced mother earth, he did not
2)the moment u know u have broken a traffic rule and see a cop coming near to do his duty, take the ignition key immdiately! the cops usually take them take them first!

        Some Imp Points

        1) If you get time to react for an accident and u have an accident its ur mistake for not being sufficiently prepared for it.
2)While riding do take tension about accidents this puts a limit on your adrenaline rush and u behave sensibly.
        3) On a divider road the person who is hell bent to take ur life comes from behind so dont drive in middle of road and always keep a look in your mirrors ur enemy is behind.
        4) On divider less roads more enemies come from front. Two trucks overtaking each other ,trust me they wont even consider u are driving on the same road. So be prepared to go offroad and in Konkan the offroad is nearly 1 to 2 feet below that means if u are at 70 u already have broken bones. Two options: Brake hard and get off the road or dare it and be on the road might be the truck driver appreciates ur daring and gives u way.Trust me guys both techniques are important but you should be wise following the second technique. My friend once applied the latter technique and I was on pillion and trust me he saved our life bcoz our bike wont stop from 70 to 0 and jump 2 feet down offroad,if we would have done that we would have surely broken our bones. His confidence saved us instead he drove more in middle of road and then gave some way for truck but very risk to do this.
        5) Again be really really aware about whats coming from ur back.
        6) Dont drive at 70 plus speeds unless there is no one on road at least 150 feet from you.It gets risky so many times i have to brake bitterly and am still learning braking in panic.
        7) Trust me guys only 10% who drive bikes no braking am in the 90%. In panic how you react cant be predicted. So always learn braking on empty roads from 60 speed and then go on increasing.
8)Who told you that Lane discipline is not for two wheelers, follow it religiously what i mean is while changine lanes please see behind and change lanes.Never change lanes or take turns or get into crossections by making any vehicle brake if u do this one day some hero will hit u hard with his car or bike.
        9) When vehicles are stopped at signal and one lane is not filled with cars dont drive in that fast lane bcoz some dumb motorcycle guy will tryto come out in this lane without looking back, especially Pune dumb bikers they are the worst.
        10) You dont do DEFENSIVE DRIVING in India and you are dead trust me on this.

          Great thread....
          Here are my few cents...

          1. Never cross 60 unless you know your bike's braking capabilities and you have practised high speed braking in wet and dry conditions.
          2. Adjust your rear view mirror correctly before starting each time, especially after parking in a public place.
          3. Check RVM and Use indicator before changing lanes, most accidents happen because of sudden change in lanes by 2 wheelers. In India most HMV have pathetic brakes, so give them indication, that your are changing lanes, beforehand.
          4. In a road with a divider, drive in the left lane and leave the right lane for HMV. Never drive in the middle of the road, drive in a lane.
          5. When you are driving with a female pillion, ask them to watch the road ahead at all the time. So they will have time to react to any adverse situation.
          6. If you are searching for any building/place or any other stuff, drive slowly in the left and ask your pillion to search for it, while you concentrate on the road.
If you are driving alone, stop the bike ask directions then proceed.
          7. Slow down if you see a bicycle, dog, pedestriants trying to cross the road and auto, you never know what they will do next.
          8. If you are married and are expecting a child, start saving for a four wheeler.
Quit tabulating grudges. Let it off. Discuss it, then trash it, don't recycle it.

            cheers
i have to agree to disagree over this point. honestly i really hate it when people ride over 50 with their parking lights. its annoying. especially when your following them. its either you are confused what direction you want to turn or your just going to break in the middle of the road.

more annoying when in the night the blinkers bothers the vision of the person behind you making it difficult to overtake or even concentrate on the road. i would only use the parking lights 'when parked' on the side of the road. over a call or waiting for someone.

Another thing that really bothers me are bikes with steel/Metal saddle bags. theses things are like mirrors & when you are riding behind someone with these saddlebags they totally blind you. i have had near misses all the time..

all we need to do are buy reflector/stickers even if says 46 or a smiley stick them up instead and you will be noticed.

bikers travelling with bags put these stickers on the backpack too. i have a helmet that has reflectors and even shoes and a backpack. my bike has a rear sticker of just a grey stripe band (reflector) rs 15.

I think the author is talking about Pilot lights.
It turns on the rear light and only the pilot light at the front. And yes it is very useful during twilight.
Every bike comes with a reflector at the rear, right?

Never stare at a gorgeous girl while driving.Always concentrate on your driving. I was driving at 60 km/h and I saw a beautiful girl, she also looked at me and smiled when she noticed that i was staring at her. I was so excited after getting her response that i almost forgot the road and all of a sudden a bus came in front of me. It was my good luck that the road was very wide at that place and bus driver showed his skill and quickly turned the bus to one side. No one noticed what happened but i learned an important lesson.

Never ever ride when u are frustrated or u are thinking about some problems...

It is really nice to see xbhp spreading bike safety awareness.
Good going guys. I am sure so many rowdies, who think they are heroes when on their machines, might have had some sort of enlightenment after going through this blog.
                    Very very good XBHP.

I want to share my experience which happened last week. I was riding through a lane in a residential area. was'nt riding too fast, but i took it for granted that the road looks clean and empty, and just throttled my bike.
and suddenly from no where, a small school girl(5th or 6th std.)crossed my bike. I was like .completely terrified.I dont know how I applied the brakes, maybe my reflexes did. I always follow that "TWO FINGERS ON FRONT BRAKE RULE". The girl was saved, my bike did stop, but it skidded to the left side of road, I fell down, and had minor bruises on my toe and elbow. The sideguard of my bike got bent and the bike also got a few ignorable scratches. Thankfully, the girl escaped.
For everyone around there I was like HERO to them. The teacher of the school even thanked me for saving the girl.

Internally,I was just so fumed that i felt like slapping the girl. But when i saw her, she was so innocentthat all my anger vanished. I just shouted at her (like her elder brother).I even told the teacher to tell her students to always be carefull while crossing a road. What if it was some four wheeler over there..! It was really the mistake of that girl..!

Lesson learnt always be carefull on seemingly clean and empty roads expecially near hospitals or schools, colleges. We dont have right to cause harm to others.Prevention is better than cure.

                    Please always follow this rule.

                      This one is for bangaloreans!

On any road in general and on hosur road in particular, Respect the Volvo buses.. these are probably the most powerful vehicles on the hosur road. Their silent engine hide its presence! Usually most of them under estimate its power specially while overtaking. My brother had a narrow escape!! from day day onwards am very cautious!!!

Be Carefull with Suzuki Swift's also. Almost everyday I see Swift drivers driving rashly.Maybe !
secondly, be very very carefull when in traffic and followed by a car, just next to your rear end of the bike.Mind u..if the car hit rear end of ur bike..there's no way u can balance ur bike.

A stray dog which was lying down on the footpath suddenly jumped onto the road right in front of me and came directly in contact with my front wheel, throwing me off the vehicle (fortunately it was a residential area and a cross road so there were no other vehicles around. I escaped with just a few bruises and a dislocated elbow). Reaction time was less than half a second so there was nothing much I could do to avoid it by braking/swerving to the side. The reason it did that sudden move was because it spotted another stray entering its 'territory' . I guess it got so worked up with the 'trespassers will be prosecuted' policy that it didn't notice what vehicles were on the road.

Lesson learnt - Be wary of stray dogs trying to cross the roads and (as in my case) even those on the footpath. Some of them cross roads smartly but most lose their cool in the middle of the road and start wandering around not knowing where to go. Slow down as soon as you see one trying to cross the road in front of you. If your bike comes in contact with one, the next minute you will be thrown off your seat and there's nothing much you can do about it.

P.S - The injury taught me to buy proper protective riding gear since there are many factors that can cause you to crash on the road- not just by you making mistakes. Better safe than sorry
When I spot a lazy stray dog in the middle of road, I skate my shoes slightly against the road to make noise. This noise of slight sand between the shoes & the road scares the dog & will make it run away from the main road clearing my riding area. Though this should not be adviced, I learned this by my experience & this has worked most of the time for me. When it failed once, a dog turned back & tried chasing me.

Awareness + Skill is what keeps you out of harm's way

From my experience of driving, I would say never follow 'Share Autos' (atleast here in Chennai). They tend to stop suddenly and take right turns without even bothering about traffic following them. I know its their livelehood to get passengers, but most of them dont follow rules in doing so. So you better stay away from them !!

Here the autos or even the rtc buses just stop in the middle of the road wherever they like blocking the traffic behind. Buses never let you overtake no matter how much u flash or honk they just love the right lane. At stops bus is at right lane and people come to middle of road to get on or off .
