Re: Issues with the FZ16

Fellow comrades, When I go past bumps, ditches, pits & rough patches, I feel a vibration in the handlebar assembly & odd sound coming out of the whole front end (console head) of the bike. This was once rectified in SVC with replacement of a set of bolts. Now the vibration is worse,, it feels like the whole assembly is going to dismantle & I would have 'the great fall'

I request knowledgeable FZ owners to throw some light. I would also like to know the name of the bolt set & where exactly are they located in the front end of the bike?
I appreciate the help!!

Post your query in FZ ownership thread. That is more active than this thread.

The issue might be on the fork cone set. The balls might have lost lubrication. Tighten the fork such that the handlebar should swing freely to either side when you swing it. Ride it again for few kilometers. If you still have the same experience replace the fork cone set.

I replaced my fork with a new one during last servicing, a month back!! Is it because of that?? I am able to relate to your explanation slightly, thanks!

If the fork cone set is weak-

1. You may completely believe that the front suspension is not doing its job properly.
2. Whenever you use the front disc brakes, towards the end when the bike stops, you will hear a "khat" kinda sound.
3. The handlebar may give you a rattling feel when you ride over gravel or bumpy roads.
4. On the center stand, when you swing the handlebar, it would not rest completely on either side. It may lock up in the midway.

The best way to check for loose fork or weak fork set is to get in front of your bike. Bend down a little and hold the bottom end of the fork (i.e) right hand holding the axle head and left hand holding the lock nut and try to pull them towards you. If there is play you need to tighten the fork. If it still persists change the fork set completely.

I guess this is exactly the matter What's pissing me is the fact that I replaced it recently & created a small scene in SVC for the bomb of 3300/-INR (consumables & service)
What do I do now? Is it a matter of just tightening a few bolts (set) or do I need to replace my fork all over again (panicking). Please educate & advise. Thanks!

Next time, the SVC guys are gonna get it bad

I hope you tried all the points that I mentioned earlier, especially the last one?
Tighten the nut (picture below) and ride for a few kilometers. If it still persists change the complete fork cone set.

Thanks!! Got it.... will check & update (now in office) "fingers crossed".

Sigh, how much does a biker go through when his/her ride is not well.

Very true mate. Sometimes most of might feel we could've stayed ignorant. Knowing things has its own advantages and disadvantages.

I followed your instructions; this is intact & shiny, just below, where the rings of the fork can be seen is greasy and that is how the SVC guys explained/justified the new installation.

One more possibility/hint: A similar thing has happened to my bike long time back & I remember the SVC guys buying a set of bolts (costed bet. 60-70/- INR) & fixing it somewhere in the front-end cluster. I could not watch'em do it due to certain reasons. EOD, I paid for it but I do not remember the name of the set & where exactly they fitted those ("ignorance is bliss", I regret). Now, my close relationship with my bike is compelling me to conclude that the same problem persists.
Any idea, what I am talking about??

The grease is from within the fork set. It comes out mostly when it has reached threshold. Are you trying to tighten it by yourself? If yes, first you need to loosen the shiny nut. Second you need flat head screw driver and a plier to tighten the lock nut. Check play of steering and then tighten back the shiny nut. Or you could ask a local mech to tighten the FORK.

Check in the receipt for the name of bolts. We might have clue. However if they already changed the bolts that area shouldn't be a problem.

all the problems sometimes happen when the front fork has a bent.. or is not 100% in its shape.. chaosaddict.. has you bike had a fall ??
if yes.. get the fork checked..
my brothers R15 had the same problem and was facing a lot of noise and vibs..
the best thing which you could do is to get your bike checked at a SVC and tell them your problem very clearly.. talk to the head mechanic about your problems..

Ride safe and have fun.
Regards

Sure. Patience is virtue bro. The worst you could expect is about 300.00 or 350.00 to replace fork cone at the SVC since they've already suggested replacement. Keep us posted bro.

I went to the SVC on Saturday & spoke to the head engineer or so!; he asked one of his guys to take a ride on my bike & report. All said & done, he concluded that the problem was because of loose fork adjustments (NOTE-same bunch of people replaced it ) I was like 'dafuq' - ch#@$ya SVC guys!! Issue resolved & no money paid. The bike feels way better now that the vib. is gone. I am just conquering miles now!!

thanks for the morale support people..
