  • HID causing battery drain

    I had recently bought a HID kit for my apache classic at Babloo, Vashi. My bike had done a 32k+ km on odo so I was advised to replace the battery before installation. Together, it was a big expense for me but it was quite thrilling to ride in the night. We had gone to Alibaug recently on a weekend trip on 4 rides and I purposely delayed the return journey so that I could lead the rest of the bikes in the name of safety...

    The excitement was short lived because after few days, the light started to flicker and go off after 10-15 min ride. Later I found the light was not a problem but the battery was. The new battery was almost dead after the light went off...!

    I had checked the battery at exide showroom, and was shocked to see the battery charge going down when the throttle was raised (even with lights off).

    The mechanic tried to find out if there if something was wrong with the rectifier but everything was fine. He has asked me to run with the stock light and check if battery goes down. Back on halogen, so far the battery seems to be fine though I did not check the output with multimeter.

    I am yet to go back to the mechanic. He was confident there cannot be anything wrong with the connection since all are fool-proof sockets in the electricals. He might suggest me to install a "cut-out", wonder how it could help... Can anybody tell me what could be wrong...

      dude where exactly are u placed??
      I am facing the same problem and after much R&D found out that the cut out is the only way out coz our batteries dont support the HID kit.
      btw if ur mech is here in mumbai i would really be intrestd in the cut out thing. Am really without a headlight now.

          There is no way these cut out thingies or relays are going to help your battery mate.
          You need to accelerate the charging mechanism. check out the Relays and DC headlights thread here.

            buddy... so you dont remember me? santhoshxtra.. razor had told you had put on the HID but surprisingly you face the same problem....

            I am planning to visit the mechanic tomorrow evening at 7.30 pm at Vashi... would you like to join me.. lets try this thing since it is not too costly...

              Hi guys, Am Sajan, have you rectified your batt charging issues? Am also after this batt issue, mine is P150 and doing some R&D to re route the light coils to batt charger. Pls update if you have sorted it out.

                Does your HID connects directly to the bike's socket or does it have a relay in the wiring kit? How have you converted to DC?

                If the issue, is battery draining out within minutes of switching on HID then check out

                  Rahul, its been tried and tested for many but atleast for me no.I have rerouted the existing light wire to a relay and a 2 way switch to swap AC/DC .Yes you are right, the wiring harness is also having a relay inside so I will be having both at a time, but I dont want to remove the bulb relay as any time I can go back to the old good halogen. My stator coil is capable of feeding a 100/90 without any delay. I am getting a batt backup of max of 45min for the HID and after that I am back to the old goody halo. I am working on it but need time to visit the mech. Hopefully this week. How about you? I have seen your earlier post facing the same issue with P200 with HID what about that?

                    Its very simple. Your alternator is not able to supply enough current for the high rated HID + the other electrical loads and charge the battery as well whether you are running on AC or DC. The Alternator is designed for a particular load (Wattage). Putting a relay (cutout) is not going to help to reduce the electrical load, infact it will result in the increase of the load marginally due to the current drawn by the relay.
                    Only solution is to increase the alternator output by modifying the windings. Again this is going to put additional load on the engine, resulting in low pickup, more fuel consumption etc.

                    Modifying the alternator is discussed elsewere in the forum posts by members who have carried out these mods .

                    I personally have experienced this problem in my Maruthi-800 when I installed 100/90 Halogen bulbs with additional relay. During night driving, switching on the Head lights slows the car a little and in the morning I find the battery very weak. Also after a couple of months the bulb wiring sockets burnt out( could not handle the extra current). Reinstalliing the standard bulbs solved the problem. BTW the battery was brand new.

                      Thanks Sudharma, that was very informative, but my stator coil is already a 100W, and I just want to use that power to boost the batt charging as my HID is squeezing the battery to to last drop. And at last I've done it. I just used a high capacity RR unit to feed the batt. Now the system is perfectly alright even with my 50WX2 Spot lamps+HID together, as the RR unit is feeding the battery @ 8A @4K!!. Since my stator coil is 100W, its delivering this much, but even with a normal 60W stator coil can deliver a max of 5-6A with a higher cap RR. So guys dont worry with HID's battery frying here's the solution. I have tried 2 other custom RR circuits but it didnt helped me, and there was a considerable drop in rpm when I connect these RR's and now a slight change something around 500-700 max!!

                      Invincible, have you sorted it out? If not lets discuss.

                          So you already had 100 Watts Stator. Good. So once the battery is fully charged, you have all the 100 watts for acc. & lighting. But how are you getting 200 watts ( 50 watts x 2 spot lamps + 100 watts HID) out of a 100 watt Stator?. ) In this case stator windings won't fry? Leave alone loading the engine. Am I missing something here?I am happy that you got the problem sorted out.

                            Whoa! Slow down. The HID is 35W only! The problem here is that full 100W is not utilized. The HID runs on DC. But a major chunk of the 100W is supplied as AC, which the HID can not use and is lying idle. So, the battery supply which is about 20W at most has to power the HID and charge the battery too. It is obviously impossible to do so. Hence the discharging,

                              Thanks for the clarification Abhijeet. I was confusing the HID with the Halogen. Hence the question.

                              Could you or any one else provide some general Info on HIDs here? I am new to this area.
