Hey bro. Were there any problems with the stock RR unit that came fitted on the ST7?

Hi Mel. No problems. Just wanted to change it before I had problems. Read in a few sites that the stock RR was very unreliable

          Re: Hyosung ST7

          Hi All,
Im new here and rather late to post here...
          Anyways I purchased a Hyosung ST7 on march 2014.

Awesome bike and a real appealing presence on road.
          Thats it!!!

          Second day : Brake noise.
It was sounding like some kind of metal to metal contact. Called the service station and the issue was promptly addressed by Pradeep the service incharge.
Third day : went on a 50 Km drive... The same problem.
Fourth day : took it to service station....the whole brake assembly was removed and re assembled.
On the seventh day took it for a 800km long drive through western ghats and returned to bangalore.....WITH THE SAME DAMN PROBLEM!!!!
The service station guys came and picked up the bike form residence....they also had the first free service done.

After the bike returned from service....I was not in town for nearly 2 months.
So came back a week ago....n the SAGA CONTINUED!!!

Pissed, I reached to the MD of DSK...Mr. Sunil. He promised to take care of the issue on war footing.
By then a new issue creep-ed up.... Fuel line leakage!!!!
          OH WOW.....
Left the bike at service station for nearly a week.....and when I returned to collect the bike..... they had taken care of the fuel leak....but the brake issue was not sorted...
Finally called the regional service manager and had the brake assembly changed under warranty.

Surprise Surprise.......three days later the same issue......

By this time I decided to take matters into my own hands and sat with the bike last Saturday. (Im from a mechanical background and also have worked with aerospace engines....this wasn't rocket science)
After careful inspection, I found out, that the Brake disk was the culprit. There was a maximum of 1.7mm run out when the rear wheel was spun freely.

Conclusion: The torque used to bolt the brake disk to the wheel was uneven.
I used a torque wrench and set it right.....
VOILAAAAA..... no Issues since saturday.....on Sunday went on a short trip to mysore....touched 160+ on the highway.....No even a single issue with the bike..... Now I feel the bike is performing as it is supposed to do.

My opinion, the service people need more education...And as I see...apart from Pradeep, there's nobody there whos passionate about superbikes or even passionate about biking.

          Ummm lets see.....The second Issue.

This is not about the bike at all...but how DSK is working with its customers.

I had booked my bike just before our great finance minister had rolled out the BUDGET.
Luckily in the budget there was a reduction of customs duty for CKD Units.
So when the final billing and delivery was done, we had over paid DSK by upto 30,000Rs. And DSK had also announced in their website about the price reduction of upto 20K on ST7.
Instead of collecting the excess money, I requested DSK to install a Back Rest, which was costing a whopping 36K including the brackets.
After some negotiations, DSK Bangalore MD Mr. Sunil agreed to install it free of cost.

My bike is still in the same condition as it was delivered.....no back rest....
STANDARD REPLY : We are yet to receive accessories from Hyosung South Korea.

Now im contemplating getting the cash back and use that money to design and build a back rest of my own......( which I know will be less than half of what DSK is offering)
Im working on the designs now.....lemme see what happens next.

          Regards
          Praveen

            Re: Hyosung ST7

            Congrats on your new steed. Wish you countless miles of pleasure. Been using it for more than two years without any major issues. If you live close to the Sea, take good care of your chrome. Just regular wiping with a clean cloth every few days...I've had the following issues;
            1) speedometer erratic.. Resolved under warranty. No issues since.
            2) tail light cover falling off( since it is not bolted but stuck into the assembly). This had happened twice and the whole assembly was promptly replaced under warranty. After it was replaced a 2nd time I've put transparent silicone compound on the area where the tail light cover sits in the assembly. No problems after that. The cover used to fall off after a while as the resin could not hold due to vibrations.
            3) chrome on clutch cover deteriorated. Replaced cover under warranty.
            No other problems. Great ride.
I had red on a few sites that the stock regulator/ rectifier on the hyosungs give way after a couple of years. Since I got out of warranty in April, I recently upgraded my RR with a new MOSFET RR from roadstercycle.com. Works nicely. The surface area on the new RR is much more and it is semiconductor based instead if diode based so heats up much less. I checked the stator as well. Still generated 70V so seems ok... Was planning to post a video of the upgrade but did not take the logistical problem of shooting in the parking lot into account[emoji16]. Way too much background noise. Anyways hope the above helps you . Safe riding

Im Praveen, based in Bangalore. A mechanical engineer by profession.
                I work with my dad.
We are into sub contracting and manufacturing India Aerospace components, Israel defense components and medical components. We have three units here at bangalore dealing with their respective fields...
Our company Website : Home - Machinewell Industries

The torque wrench was ready available at our workshop.... We have a complete Industrial tool kit imported from germany...
Similar ones are available on ebay too @2300Rs-8000Rs. An ideal torque wrench should be betwee 10 ft-lbs to 100 ft-lbs rated one.

Could you also tell me which make/model mosfet you have used(Possibly a link) ? I'll try placing an order for the same. I really cant depend on these Bangalore DSK guys!!!!

                Thanks and Regards

Thanks for the tip. Was looking to buy one. Why do you want to change your RR so soon? Let it run till you are within warranty. If anything does happen, you are still covered.
What I bought is this from Jack at roadstercycle.com:
                  Super Mosfet kit FH020AA
                  Item #: Super Mosfet kit
                  Circuit protection: Circuit breaker setup

It cost me a bomb but my baby is worth it.

                  Go to this link;
                  http://roadstercycle.com/Shindengen%20Mosfet%20Regulator%20about.htm

It is almost plug and play. I just needed to solder and crimp the wires. The size is slightly larger than the stock RR but the bolt holes still align. Only issue was that the coolant hose under the RR comes in the way of the new RR connectors. I used longer bolts instead of the stock ones. Used lots of washers, as spacers, to bring the RR slightly outside and clear of the coolant hose and tightened the bolts.
Also Instead of using the stock wiring harness, Iv'e connected the RR directly to the battery.

Impressive. I purchased my ST7 in March as well. I love how it looks, although I am aware that the plasticky chrome won't last, and that the bike has a few problems. In the very beginning, I had a problem starting the bike. Pradeep came and after a few tries, set it right - apparently, the stand was pressing the starter off switch even when raised.

Then I saw that DSK has forgotten to give me the toolkit. I requested it for over a month, finally had them do servicing and held back payment - after which I was given a toolkit, though I don't think it was OEM.

Next trouble was the backrest and the front screen. The OEMs were ugly expensive - I got my old Bajaj Avenger backrest fitted to my ST7, and it works perfect. Likewise, got a cheap screen from the market for about 800 bucks. The real deal cost some 15k, I believe.

Another problem was servicing. These guys seemed out to get you, once they dug in their claws by having you buy the bike. First time, the guy asked 500/- for pick up/drop off, which I paid since I stay in north Bangalore, and the servicing is in Jayanagar. My car servicing, which happens to be in Bommanahalli, has free pickup/dropoff.

Next time, these guys asked for 1000/-. I also suspect I was paying a lot for free servicing, in terms of amount of engine oil, costs etc. So I had my local guy do the engine oil etc for me. It was ok. I know, though, that for serious work I will have to go to DSK.

For example, a few months ago, one of the small chrome plates guarding the muffler (near the top) broke off. I asked my local guy, and he couldn't open the muffler. So I had to glue it together. After about a month, it came off again. I haven't put it back. I am waiting to go to DSK for the next service. Probably 2k to fit that back in.

High octane petrol is a real problem. Luckily, I have a Shell nearby. But on longer trips, I have been forced to use normal petrol. No trouble obvious, but I am sure there's problem happening inside because of that.

I hear octane boosters are available, but I don't know where to buy.

Another issue is muffler heating. My 4-year old son got badly hurt the other day. I know there's some coating available (saw in an UK website) but don't know where to get it.

All these are problems that happens with a new or not widely known brand.

However, when I go on a ride and the whole traffic stops to check out my bike, I know it's worth it all.

One question for you guys: I am trying to do the following mod, which I photoshopped from a Goldwing and an ST7. See if you think this is possible. I will want to add a steel bracket at the back for a piece of luggage. This is for my Himalaya trip in April-end - wifey refused to go along unless I make the pillion more comfortable.

The pillion seat is just fine. But my wife, with whom I am planning a Bangalore-Panchkedar trip this April, would prefer something more comfy. Such a trip would need something more relaxing. Of all bikes I have ever seen, the Goldwing pillion seat is the most comfortable.

If anyone knows of a good guy in bangalore for this mod, let me know. Its just leatherwork. I am planning to check out Rao's in Shivajinagar.
