Re: RE Continental GT (Cafe Racer)

    Hi,
Visited the showroom to book my TB500 and My friend who went with me ended up booking a GT.
    Me:why the GT?

FR: GT saw me and begged me to take him home...so i did oblige and gave him a warm and cozy home.!!!

I was told no sari guard on GT as its registered as a single seater bike so no sari guard is required while registering at RTO.
also can some one throw some light on these....why are these here.....i have seen dual sari guard on HD's .....so are these to fit dual sari guards?.....but why on GT?...does it mean RE working on a cruiser based on the GT frame?

          Hi Omkar,

Congrats for the new bike !!! Proud to share that I am also an owner of this beauty.
I see you have mentioned that you upgraded it to Free Flow exhaust (MegaFlow).

Could you please let me know the total cost for this?

            Royal Enfield Continental GT

I am following the xbhp forum for quite a long time ago and had read several experiences of my fellow bikers with their mean machines. Actually the fact is i started loving my bike from the time i started following xBHP, until that time the bike for me was just a machine to travel. Sorry for being off topic but i would like to take this oppurtunity to thank the moderators for allowing me to become a member at this forum and secondly to all of you my fellow riders who inspired me to love my bike more than to just ride it.
Now coming to the point of actually starting this thread. I had owned several small sized motorcycles in the past starting from a hero honda cd 100, to a mean TVS Apache RTR 180, to a smaller commuter range of Mahindra centuro and a pair of thunderbird 350/500. I am currently owning a Royal Enfield Continental GT ( yellw colour). Coming on the bike it was a really difficult choice of choosing this bike as there were two important reasons. The first one was that my previous motorcycles were second hand as i was not having enough funds with me to bring myself a new bike and second was this was my first brand new bike which i wanted to own and that too on loan. Before choosing this machine i was surfing the internet in all the time i got to choose a bike which should have all the good looks combined with loads of power. But to my dismay the reviews of this bike on several sites were not warming for me. So i decided to go with a classic 500. On 4th July 2014 i went to Soniya Motors, Bhandup an authorised Royal enfield dealer to book a beast for myself. The moment i entered the showroom saw several beauties lying up there from standard to a classic and thunderbird. There in the corner was sitting the most beautiful of the lot a GT with a red colour. On just seeing that bike one thought came to my mind " Do hell with the reviews i will buy a GT". Initially i was a bit worried on choosing it but decided to follow my heart and gave a booking amount of Rs. 5000/- to the dealer. My excitment got doubled the moment i heard that there was no waiting period for the bike and it will be delivered to me as soon as the loan is processed. But the very next moment my excitment fizzled through by breathe as i thought to myself that all the Royal Enfield bikes comes with a minimum waiting period of 2 to 3 months then how come this one is readily available. May be its not been more demanding and it would be a huge regret on buying this one. I tried to clarify my query with the sales person sitting there and he replied to me saying that Sir its your choice at the end of the day as far as this bike goes you are the first person who is booking this bike from our showroom and if you ask me i would recommend you to go for the classic or a thunderbird. I returned from the showroom without giving the deposit amount wanting some more time to think. I again started searching the internet about this machine and there was more of a negative response towards this bike from the owners of the bike. Several days passed by and i failed to see a single GT riding in my locality so that i can get some personal feedbacks. On 10th July i went to the showroom again and i dont know what happened to me at that time as i booked a GT yellow colour for myself and gave all the needed documents to them. I just followed my heart at that time and thought OK whatever the end result would be atleast i would regret of not buying this bike.
Need to catch up with some work. Sorry for my english and my grammatical errors. Will continue my love story with this bike very soon.

              Re: Royal Enfield Continental GT

              Hi GT Owners,

Dhiren, Comforting to hear someone went through what I am going through right now. I fell in love over two pretty lengthy test rides I took of the GT and although I own a pretty nice bike right now, I have been wishing to have another one for those weekend rides in and outside the city limits. I was initially apprehensive of RE having owned one a decade ago and then selling it off for peanuts just due to the reliability issues, but I hear they have been somewhat resolved now.

I am not really into the super fast Jap/Austrian bikes and though the CLassic 500 seems like a safe bet, its just too common these days. Didnt like the seating position of the TBird either. Anyway, could you tell me what the ownership experience is like so far.?

I believe others on this thread are also long term owners, so this is a shout out to all of you! Please tell me in general how is this bike to live with and maintain? I have posted the query in the RE forum on this site and the What Bike to choose forum as well but havent received any replies since there are so few owners. I also dont know anyone who owns the GT.

Omkara you seem to have owned this beautiful machine for close to an year. Please share your insights and your long term review of this bike. Basically not just the good but the bad and the ugly bits as well. Really hoping a lot for your response.

                Recommended Oil for RE Conti-GT

                Hey Guys,

Hope you've seen my intro thread.

Just wanted to know which oil is best recommended for the Conti-GT. Till now I'm using what the RE Guys have put in, but after 2 quick services now that my service interval will be at 6000km, I'd like to use something which will not only boost the performance but also help the engine run a little cooler & smoother. Right now I feel a good amount of heat on my right leg after being in a bit of traffic.

My earlier experience of 10yrs with the Unicorn was with Castrol Magnatech and I really liked that oil. I've read about Motul Semi-Synthetic being most recommended for newer RE bikes. RE experts What's your take on this?

Also this being my first Enfield, It'll be really helpful if you can guide about the particular things I should be looking out for, taking care of or changing for better performance, reliability and life.

                Regards,
                Kaushik Iyer

Motul oils do a resonable job for RE's. Also, stick to the recommended grade and things will be fine.

Re: Recommended Oil for RE Conti-GT

oil update - Changed the oil by my self 2weeks back. It was a pretty big pain honestly & took a lot of time cause sleeping down on the pavement & working is not necessarily ergonomic. But It was very much fun & engaging, tough was not pretty straight-forward since there are 3 bolts to drain. Changed the oil filter.

Refilling was not as expected, I filled slowly and waited for the level to come in the oil-peek window. Thought that was it, but after I started the engine & warmed it up the level went down drastically!!! not sure where the oil went possibly in all the nooks & cranny. So filled it again, did this a couple of times now it's proper.

Feedback - I noticed that the revving was much smoother & better with this, going beyond 3k easily without any fuss. It also reaches the rpm faster. I had expected the engine to run a little cooler but it's not made that much of a difference, maybe marginal.

Probably next change will be semi-synthetic Motul-5100, I've heard that it really very good for RE.

Re: RE Continental GT (Cafe Racer)

Either there are hardly any GT owners here or simply they're not very much active!!

Anyway I recently saw an amazing thread - Ninja San, quite an inspirational thread, pushing the bike to it's limits of customization. Which made me wonder, if anyone has done something like this to their GT!!! I'd certainly like to customize mine going into the future, one of the things on the list is a plonking a in-line twin engine into this frame. though its a long shot but it'll definitely happen in future.

Right now I'm thinking of little bit's & bobs, eg adjustable levers for instance, or a decent exhaust, Rear brake upgrades etc. But I've found hardly anything like that on Indian GTs . Also apart from Hitchcock motorcycles UK I don't find anything which can be a proper bolt on performance, or accessories kit here in India. Any help in that direction will be of help.

Performance Mods need Ecu mapping, if you change the combustion system. Few guys selling aftermarket ecu..
Change air filter, Exhaust and porting/Polish cylinder head. Add small Visor if you want to and Swap rear break with ktm. I have seen few mods job like handle bar , Visor, etc but not sure in india.

Well I've read about the Hitchcock Power Commander & I've seen that for some other motorcycles power-commanders are available locally here not sure about Conti GT.

Though I'm still waiting for the 1st year to be over before getting into high-performance bits.

I'm actually looking for a Wind shield which can help in long distance riding.
