• [Ownership Thread]: The Flynn Pegasus - Hero Honda Splendor '97!

Nothing I have to write about the Pegasus! My dad has been having it and maintenance is almost nil! And still riding like a dream!

Photos on Attachments!

Here comes story:

Hero Honda Splendor was bought by my dad from UP and it has went rounds inside India!
It went to almost all places in India!
It is the 3rd bike we had in our family. The Bajaj Cub, The Kinetic Honda ZX and 3rd is my Pegasus, Hero Honda Splendor!

He was working in Air-Force. So he got the bike through CSD Canteen stores.
On that time to present day the price has risen only by Rs. 1000-2000 for Hero Splendor in CSD.
The price when he bought was about Rs. 37000

He used to get transfers around states and states and finally ended up in TN, Tambaram at the stage of his Retirement after 25 years of service.

The bike stayed dormant in Bangalore, Yelahanka for 1-1.5 years.

Me and my dad were in Bangalore. There was some small bit of petrol in reserve.
We took my dad's friend's Libero carrying a 1-litre pet bottle for fuel.

Guess What? The Pegasus came to life shouting in the 3rd kick, Not even used choke!
We are so surprised how come it started in the 3rd kick!!

It has the old type silencer which gives Bassy-throaty sounds. ( The one with a larger hole than present lot.)
It used to make(Still making) a dag-dag sound though not as loud as an Enfield Bullet

Then the bike has been put in train and it has been welcomed to Namma Chennai, Tamil Nadu for the 2nd time!
It was already in Chennai from years 2003-2005 after which it went to Coimbatore
Then I had picked up it and started doing rounds inside Chennai!
I like riding it in 15 kmph on 3rd gear and 20 kmph on 4th gear!
It is like smoothly spreading its wings on the road! I just LOVE the sound and feel while driving like this!

Another Liking of riding it is Angry Mood! (But I don't like it to push it harder, But sometimes I am in need of POWER)
The Pegasus and open roads is an IdIoTiC Combination!
But LOVE its sound when accelerating to higher RPM and decelerating from higher RPM.
Oops! I missed it! The phut-phut sound while decelerating! I love it too!

The Pegasus used to return 75 kmpl for 11-1/2 years after that it began to tapper off!
Today the Pegasus is returning 47-52 kmpl which makes me and my Dad HAPPY that too after a long period of time without changing engine internals.
When I ride, it returns 46-47 kmpl while my Dad rides it, it returns above 50!
My Dad drives it very very sane on streets. But If he entered a major road Ex: Beach Road in Chennai, The speedo needle will never come below the 50 kmph marking! ( But, it does come down while braking :-P )

Now coming to its reliability,
You think about engine and it strikes your head that the engine is a HONDA!
Yes, It is reliable as a Honda, Not even a single part changed in engine.
The engine is not opened and it is fresh as new!
The Sprockets are the only issue that too running after 1^68^801 kms on odo (odo was not counting for a considerable time).
The maintenance done periodically on a time-period of 8 months is:
Air filter cleaning, Oil changing, Cleaning and Lubricating the chain, Lubricating external moving parts like brake, wheel hub and bearings etc , Cleaning Carburettor if needed and finally tighten the brakes!
You are good to go now!
This is the maintenance followed from beginning day 1 !

Parts Changed:
- Front and rear break shoe for a couple of times.
- Replaced Rear tyre to 3.00 x 18.
- Front tyre and rim replaced (Damaged due to transportation from Bangalore through Truck).
- Throttle cable.
- Clutch cable.
- Speedometer Cable.
EDIT -Sprocket kit.
That's all the list of changed!

Now I'm sad and almost crying but I don't have any other way.
The time may be nearing to part ways with it.
The bike is running good but me and my dad are afraid. When we are on a long trip and suddenly engine seized/stopped what would happen?
The engine's components have seen many many many time and days and years and lots of challenges like hill climbing. They are almost worn which has 30-40% Life on them.
My dad is not going to replace any of the engine components as the bike has no on-road value.
That's why riding it till its call of death comes and part ways with it.

End of my Ownership Review.

We have the same bike (old Splendor model, 96 make IIRC) at home, even same in color!
Don't discard it yet, my dad has done 2.5+L kms without touching the internals.
Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

One should not think of discarding the bike, whenever the needs arise just refurbish the engine and she will be again new and will keep you serving for another 20 years, pls don't discard such a honest and reliable humsafar.

My suggestion - let it be there with you. Don't part with it. Anyways you are not going to get a very high amount by selling it. It's like a treasure! Restore it and it will serve you for a few good years to come!

Ok since you have posted here then let me add here that old model bikes like splendor are not to be sold but treasured. We have a thread here for the legend of this series, and all tech lunatics are there in that thread. So not a problem in restoring as that bike will last till world war 3 and even outlast a nuclear holocast.

Coming to your bike then let me add that my Joy is soon touching 4 lacs kilometers and will still teach new bikes a lesson or two.

Any new bike you buy will not give satisfaction as this bike. So i may request you to re-build the engine and it will run for next decade or two. May be in next decade when bike will more electronics then these simple mechanical glories will be remembered.

If you need any help then experts like shoeb2015, paul.1911, RohIIT, are there and then i am also there.

But selling this old beauty will pain a lot. May be you will buy another bike, but keep this and welcome to the splendor thread we lunatics are waiting you as we are surprised that in this day another youngster has come who is crazy about splendor.

 This reminds me of HMC Splendor advertisement tagline, "Lage aisa, family jaisa". IMHO, Rebuilding the engine is the best thingh one can gift to a living legend. Though it doesn't make as much horespower, say as RX100 but it definitely is the ride most of us learnt riding on. #respect RohIIT I think you should have a look here.

This Thread reminds me of my good old times with my splendor. Too bad I got her exchanged for a p180 in 2006.. she served me from 2000 to 2006.. I only have one pic of her.. Felt very bad for giving her away.. would have still been loyal to me had I had it til now. Wondering where that little beast is and in whose hand she is.. probably in some junk yard

Thanks for all your cheers!
Dad says that it has no on-road value, If a cop catches bike should be parked near Police station and forget it
Any way to renew papers? All papers including RC Book lost while coming from Rajasthan

Any idea to improve mileage? Changed Air filter, Oil and dis-assembled and cleaned the carburettor. Pickup has decreased. Any ideas on that too?
rreneav1987
How dual light setup? What's cost?

What will be the cost for engine rebuild? Maybe Dad will not allow me to do anything on that bike

Also saw a self-start mechanism on a 1997 Splendor. Its gearbox and crankcase covers are different. They were round in shape and self-start motor above it! Will click pictures after charging my phone.
It is near my neighbourhood!

For procuring duplicate RC.
Step 1 : Get an affidavit on a Rs. 20 stamp paper, saying that the RC could not be found despite the police investigation.
Step 2 : Get an FIR at the police station nearest to where you lost it
(Ideally, step 2 should come before step1 but the police prefers it this way because the affidavit removes their need to search for RC).
Step 3 : Download, print and fill form 26 from RTO website (eg: transport department)
Step 4 : Get xerox of (a) Vehicle's insurance paper (b) Emission test paper (c) Driving license
Step 5 : Get a postal envelope with a stamp worth Rs 15, total cost Rs. 25 (usually available near the RTO office itself). Write your postal address, phone and vehicle number on the envelope.
Step 6 : Pin all the papers above and get them signed from the Superintendent at RTO office.
Step 7 : Pay the fees for a duplicate RC at RTO cashier (Rs 235 for smart card). Pin the receipt with the 7 papers above.
Step 8 : Get the whole package signed from the PRO/RTO at the RTO office
Step 9 : Submit whole package at RTO office
Step 10 : Relax and wait for the RC to be delivered to your postal address

I think whole engine rebuild shall cost you around 10,000/-rs, just try to convince your dad that if a person in your house get's old or fall ill we usually don't discard that person, and so is the case with this bike,

On the self start option i believe then you have to change whole of the side chamber, cdi, wiring, starter motor, battery etc. and all other ancellories, which will again hike the budget.

Mileage is about 44-45 kmpl. Till last week, it returned 50 kmpl. doesn't what happened this Monday!

There are lot of things that can affect mileage. major is the fuel adulteration.. the quality of fuel matters. Which fuel station do you fill the fuel in?? HP, BP, IBP, Indian Oil?

another reason could be air pressure..

one more can be the AFR mixture.. I am not good with carbs as I haven't used a carb bike in like years. few guys who can help you out better are psr sir Divya Sharan sibun ravi@17bhp who are some experts I know with carbs AFR mixture tuning..

Get a photo of the spark plug and upload it here.. maybe that can help us identify if the mixture is lean or running rich..

Spark Plug - Doesn't know whether it has replaced. Plug may not be changed from buying it! Atleast it should be 10 years old. The engine is never opened and touched. As the slogan "Fill it, Shut it and Forget it"!!
