Yes I completely agree with you on the reliability part as well as no machine comes even close to delivering such performance from a 150cc engine.

In-fact, to this day I am yet to hear any sort of criticism about my R15 S from all of my family members & friends who rode it. Once they go for a ride on this machine, they come back with a mile wide smile on their face; and praise its performance. One of my friend who rides a Harley Davidson Street 750 even told me if he were to ever consider buying any other Indian made bike then it has to be the R15.

I might be sounding like a fanboy at this point, but even from a rational perspective it is hard to come across such a problem free bike like this one.

And your observation regarding the oil issue seems spot on. As the culprit was an improperly tightened drain plug which was not threaded-in properly; And it became loose due to the pressure/vibrations from the crankcase at high RPMs when I took the bike for a long spin on the Highway. Before that there was no such leak, but immediately after the ride I could see a small oil stain right where I park my bike.

Update:
I have since driven about 500 kms on replaced oil and not a single drop has been leaking since, neither is there a reduction in engine oil level. The ride quality is smooth and vibe free as Day 1 and gear shifts are clickity click like a Swiss watch mechanism.

I also brought this issue up on the R15 V2 thread and had lots of useful tips from experienced members over there. As per their suggestions I will be keeping a close eye on the oil level until I am sure no further problems exist.

At this point I no longer trust the SVC mechanics to do the job properly in my absence; so will get the head checked at next service. Those incompetent guys made a fool out of me at first free service by not changing the oil filter, and then at third service by skipping the oil change. Both incidents happened at different SVCs.

On Another note how many times have you had to get the valve clearances/tappets adjusted on your bike??

I have hit 7000 KMs mark on ODO and the engine sounds just fine (No loose marbles sound); So wondering if it is a gradual increase in tappet sound or it just happens altogether?

Thanks,
Chirag
Nice to hear that. I myself is a Yamaha fanboy and and back myself by making other understand how well made and high performing engineering it has got.
I owned this for 21,000 kms and except brake pad change and few chain tightening and wheel alignment nothing special was performed.

Regarding tappet adjustment. If you hear any tic tic noise along with smooth humming engine sound at idle , thats when you need to adjust tappets. I remember doing the adjustment on my first service as the bike came with loose tappets.
Also the most important suggestion for a smooth and long engine and chain sprocket life will be cleaning chains and lubing every 600-700 kms and keep them adjusted. Because most of the dirts enter engine through this mechanism.
Happy riding.

21 thousand km done and no valve clearance or tappet adjustments done till now.
Only regular services done on time, and nobody at service center advised to get these things done or checked.
From my end, there was nothing wrong with the bike, no tappet noise or anything, so I didn't ask them to check (why fix when it isn't broken, right ).

So I think there is no need to worry about valves and tappets, unless you are sure that they need to be worked upon. Also, check the service book, it will have all the jobs that should be done at certain no. of kms (For ex - air filter has to be replaced at 12k kms). I don't remember tappet or valve adjustments intervals. Check the service book and you will get a more clear picture.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

Yes mate I always clean & lube the chain every 500 KMs or as soon as it feels a bit dry. I mostly ride on good roads so the chain hardly gets dirty but I do clean it atleast once a month.

The chain is still halfway on the adjuster notches on swing-arm and is set to adjustment as mentioned in the manual (3-4 CMs free play)

I also carry a can of lube spray when going on tours.

That is precisely my line of thought. As in 'Why fix it if it ain't broken?'.

I only asked regarding the valves/tappets to gauge if there is any set interval when they loose correct clearance, But judging from your & Anunay 's reply I can tell it is not a regular occurrence. Thanks for clearing it up for me.

And I do keep my Owners manual handy (It is good reading material every once in a while )
Also change parts/consumables at specified intervals and sometimes even before that.

Off Topic:

I seem to be having a hard time with oil leaks these days. As only yesterday I discovered my TVS Scooty Zest (Used for domestic duties) was also leaking oil from the engine. Turns out the oil drain plug O-ring had lost shape due to extreme summer heat. So had to get my hands dirty yesterday and changed the O-Ring and fit a new drain plug for good measure along with the usual oil change. My mom suggested I should quit my day job and open up a garage lol

Hard to believe but 2 out of 3 of my two wheelers had oil leaks in the same week. Weird conincidence or just bad luck!

Happy riding!

1. Minimum 40km mileage. ? - Depends what Revv range you ride, I ride mine between 4-6k rpm and returns me a good 49kmpl inside city and 53 on highways when ridden under 100 kmph

2. Daily use and weekend long rides ? - Daily use yes, long rides a bit difficult as you will start to feel the pain at your shoulders mainly, but rest after 100 odd kms, you will be ok

3. is this good for family use ? - Family as in Wife alone or with kids, my opinion, Kids no, wife yes if she can sit double sided, I cant balance one-sided, so I demand my wife to wear her dress accordingly if she is to travel with me. Reason, one sided, there is no saree guard and their legs will be hanging down which is not good and dangerous for them and to us.

4. Service cycle and cost ? - Biggest drawback IMO, 70 days service interval, cost comes upto 1k (free service, without labour), after free service, might shoot upto 1600. I am sticking to this crap schedule only for warranty.

or any other choices ?

1. Minimum 40km mileage. ?
Ans: depends on your riding style. if you race around from red light to red light accelerating like hell then braking similarly at the next traffic signal, you will get low mileage. whereas constant highway ride at 90 will give you close to 50 kmpl. Under mixed city conditions expect 40-50. Please note that I am not advising to ride it like splendor, but redlining it every time you get on saddle will have an affect on fuel consumption.

2. Daily use and weekend long rides ?
Ans: You'll have wrist pain and back pain for first few weeks. If you are in good shape and reasonable health with no history of back pain; you'll be fine. For me, about 5 hours on saddle without break is doable. anything more and i'll have to take break, bike is as crisp as ever after the 5 hours.

3. is this good for family use ?
Ans: It really helps if you have other vehicles in the house (Activa and/or car) so you can choose to use either of them if need be. Buying groceries, picking someone up or dropping someone will be a bit of problem, but nothing you cannot get used to. Ladies have to sit properly (no one side seating).

4. Service cycle and cost ?
Ans: 3 months or 3k kms, which ever comes first. The free service will cost less than a thousand rupees. The paid ones cost anywhere above 1600 rs. Depending on what work needs to be done, any consumables to be replaced (Brake pads, air filters). It will cost a lot more if you crash.

or any other choices ?
Answers in red. Hope this helps.

Quick question folks.. can I replace the side fairings of R15S with those of R15 V2? I like those fish gill vents on V2 so much If yes, what would be the cost. Thanks.

Hi guys, Im looking to buy R15s next month. I heard that Yamaha going to launch R15 V3 in near future(rumor is someone already spotted R15 v3 in Hyderabad showroom) . My concern is even though v3 being launched, is YZF R15s production going to be stopped? will i face any problem while buying YZF r15s next month? Thank you in advance.

Hi There,
I assume you would have done your research before you arrived to the conclusion that the R15-S fits your needs (For the single seat) which is much more usable for a pillion rider than the split seat set-up on the R15 V2.

If that is the case then I suggest it does not make sense for you to wait for the R15 V3, as even if it does get launched in India by end of this year, it will still miss out on the single seat and the relative comfort factor of the S.

However if you want an out and about sportsbike like the V2 then you can consider waiting (but keep in mind the launch of v3 in India is only a rumour for now and Yamaha has not issued any official statement or launch date)

Another thing you must give a thought to is the Price, I am fairly sure the R15 V3 will command a premium price over the outgoing model.

Apart from all this I guess its not a major update as you are only gaining 3 HP more and the chassis, etc remains the same. Just my 2P on this!

Cheers!

A slipper clutch, USD forks and LED headlamps are additions too in V3. The former is not a must have on a 155cc bike, however the other two are significant additions. Of course, a lot depends on when Yamaha launches this in India. I feel it will be priced at a slight premium over the FZ25

• Trying new chain lube

Hi good folks,

Tried something new today.

As I've mentioned on occasions here, I've been using Yamaha's gear oil as a chain lube for my R15S's 500-700 KMs chain lubing which I do myself. WD40/Zorrik remains the cleaning agent. So far so very good, as the gear oil really helped keeping the chain well lubed. However, today I realized that the rear rim always gets coated in a layer of greasy substance with so much dust, which clearly is the gear oil splashes from the chain. That made me thinking while I was having the routine bike wash. The rear rim always gets dusty even though I clean both rims with my chain cleaning schedule.

Looks like it was time to try a new lubing agent. I'm not a fan of water based lubes e.g. the Yamalube spray which they use in SVC, but that's always one option albeit an expensive one. So in my search I noticed this thing in the neighborhood shop - Arrowchem Adhesive lube spray.

After cleaning the chain, I proceeded to spray this thing, at that moment I realized its a sticky gel/gum like lube which gets sprayed in the form of foam though.(I should've known from the word - Adhesive, duh!). Now, I yelled f@ck it and proceeded to lube the complete chain with this thing, which ended in the chain becoming shiny and sticky, looked well lubed though by a touch. It says on the bottle that it prevents rust, is water and salt proof.

My question is - did anyone try it or something like it so far and what has been their experience with the adhesive type lubes?

(I'll be ditching the gear oil lubing for a while so my option is this or the water based lubes)

Cheers.

I hope no. Next gen V3 doesn't have too in the international markets. They might release with abs in India if the indian govt makes it mandatory.
