re: Bajaj Discover Ownership Thread

Hi to all the members of the forum,

Even I am facing a strange problem with my discover 100 cc DTSi motorcycle (02 and half year old and run for 42000 km). Of late it has been consuming engine oil at approximately 200-250 ml for every 1000 km. on hard revving it is emitting a little or faint black smoke from the exhaust. Is this normal? The pickup and mileage are absolutely normal (70 Kmpl) i city traffic. I am not facing any other problems like starting or stalling. Also examined the spark plugs they are in good coke colour. All the periodic maintenance is done by me and is done promptly. (Oil change at 2000 km, air filter change, spark plug adjustment and timely replacement of required parts ) The air filter was changed only some 2000 km ago. The mechanic is of the opinion that the vehicle needs to be re-bored shortly, but this vehicle has clocked only 42000 km till date. isn't this too early for a rebuild.Kindly suggest what might have gone wrong.

Since i am a DIY kind of person, I am considering to open the head and to check tappet clearance. I am also considering changing/ lapping of valves. Can any one please let me know the tappet clearances of Discover 100 DTSi. I request all the forum members to give their opinion and suggestions.

Regards

Pointers:
1. Black smoke is not normal.
2. 200-250ml/1000km oil consumption is too much

I had faced similar problem recently but the oil consumption was not more than 100ml. My problem was solved after Valve adjustment

Solution:
Check tappets first if never touched till now.
Adjust Valves as per below:
Inlet Valve gap: 0.05 mm
Outlet Valve Gap: 0.10mm

Engine has to be in cold condition and piston at TDC.
Do not attempt DIY if you have never done this before Because you need some special tools like Gauge to measure clearance. Also the four bolts on the top cover would be jammed. Hence, search for some skilled mechanic to get the job done.

Dear Lokesh027,
Thank you for the quick response. I will be continue running the bike for some more km (say 5000-6000) and see if any more problems surface/ the smoke increases. By the way I have a feeler gauge to check tappet clearance, but don't have the tool for holding the tappet. Can you let me know where can I get this. Also I have a doubt related to the engine oil filter. Should this be changed every 10000 km and has any done done this?

1. Adjust tappets/ valve clearance first as per the specifications I mentioned above.
To hold the tappets you can use small pliers even I do the same. Just need to be careful while tightening the nut.
Again, engine should be cold and piston at TDC.
2. Oil filter should be replaced at every oil change
3. Keep check on oil level every 500kms thereafter

As you believe in DIY, you can move forward and get this done yourself. Also check DIY section too

Thanks Lokesh027,

Many thanks for the response. Since I find that the entire forum is ver much about bigger bikes and we find a lot less regarding the common man's bike i.e. the 100 ccs like HH splendour and Bajaj Disover etc. The data for bajaj discover is far less than the HH splendour and other bikes. I request all the members of their forum also to post DIY's and other technical information regarding smaller bikes and particularly regarding discover as we hardly find any information on the net.

Thanks all once again
Cheers!!!!!!!!!!! and a happy weekend ahead.

OK after riding for nearly 1800 kms after the last oil top up i got my bike serviced and the mech told me that there was hardly any engine oil left. Now i am pretty sure there is an issue.
Lokesh027 let me check what you told about the white smoke. Also can you tell me whats the max oil capacity in the bike?

My bike doesnt idle properly. Turns off quickly. I just held the throttle for a min or so and then let it idle. After a min it turns off. I kept revving and at high rpm i can see faint white smoke. Seems to be very light. Should i check this after driving the bike for a while?

Goto any mechanic and tell them to set idle time properly. The you won't face quick turn off issue.

The mechanic told me since there is oil spillage this will happen. When i go more than 40km/h and abruptly stop it will turn off. Something like spark plug head gets covered with oil.

Dear benryu,

Some thing is seriously wrong with your run in, rather I would say looks like a fault with your handling. These small sub 100 cc engines are designed for city traffic and need great deal of compassion and care. (especially with bajaj vehicles which cannot withstand abuse). Even sometimes with utmost care these engines have a very short life. You would have gone for a new block piston kit (approx 1300 Rs here in Hyderabad and comes along with a new set of piston rings and is of the stock specifications)and run it in same way for approx 2500 km and thereafter continue to ride in a same manner i.e. at approximately 50 to 60kmph. I would insist on strictly no modifications since these are sub 100 CC bikes and don't have the grunt for performance. Buy a bigger bike to satisfy your need for speed.

Um i dont know about the run in. Initially until first service my dad drove the bike. He's a very sedate driver and doesnt cross 40. I learnt to drive after first service and used this bike to learn and i dont drive beyond 55-60 coz of the vibes. What exactly needs to be checked or replaced? Mech at Kun All said it will cost 8-9k. Checked with Bajaj also and they said similar amount.

Dear benryu

As the case with a smoking bike, the maximum damage that can happen is the block piston might have worn out and needs to be replaced along with the oil seals. As in your case check with the mechanic if the seals are in place and are sealed properly. As a last resort change the entire block piston kit (new, as I mentioned in Hyderabad it is 1300 approx). You can get it from any of the bajaj dealer. Along with it the oil seals will cost you around another 200 Rs. Check the valves and replace if they need to be replaced (bajaj genuine valves cost you Rs. 250 ). Also in a rare case the timing chain may also need to be replaced(don't know the cost). After replacement of all these parts the bike will be as brand new. Run in the bike properly for approx 2000 to 25000 kms and keep riding the bike sanely. Again don't attempt any mods. All the new parts and labour should not cost you more than 2500 approx. Don't get fleeced by Bajaj Dealerships. Find a good mechanic for the job.

Thanks @sarada06884 Let me check out the prices at Bajaj authoried spares. I dont know any trusted mechanic so that is also a cause for concern.

After last service and oil change bike is very smooth. I have run 35k kms and maintained really well. No accident till date and its a 2011 model. How much can i expect to sell it for?

35K Km is too short for an overhaul. The selling price depends a lot on the condition of the vehicle i.e. the scratches, overall maintenance, condition of the tyres etc. For a 2013 model bike in good condition, the price is 28,000 Rs which can go up to 30,000 Rs. I Don't know the price there in your place. I would advise to go to a two to three used bikes shop and enquire about the price of your vehicle. Then go to some more used shops and say that you want to purchase a bike. You can get the approximate price at which it can be sold and bought. Then fix some intermediate price and sell it on OLX or Quicker.

By the way how is your vehicle doing now?

Like i said after servicing and refilling oil its smooth and good. I can hardly notice any white smoke. How can i check this issue other than exhaust? Like without opening the engine.
