Well,I m not a teche,may b you know better.....
but as those sounds are there from the begining,so i dont think thats doing some harm to my engine or so.......

i m really scared to hear the word "piston".i had my past experiences with my Gladiator.

it's a slight rough noice u hear when you'll put ur ear close to the engine that qualifies as the piston noice, hear it according to the exhaust beat you'll get it, same goes with the tappet noice too.
All noices are normal with the RTR engine structure right from the FIERO days. The Magician"

Actually once in my Gladi,my engine was seized, pistons were wore-out(strictly due to my negilence).there i used to hear the "piston noises".HH Dawn - TVS Star City - Yamaha Gladiator - TVS RTR 180 - Honda CBR 250R - Yamaha R3

Renny, I would beg to differ on this....Originally posted by rennycornelius View PostIts the noice you hear in the morning the most when you start your bike after parking it overnight when the tappets are not "lubed".
Its kinda metallic noice that gels with the sound of the engine very well (try to hear it according to the exhaust beat and you'll recognize the noice)so you got to lend big ear to it, the noice gradually subsides when the engines reaches its operational temp but in case of RTR the noice is always there, specially while taking off in 1st gear (sharply), accelarating off a speed breaker, and it remains audible till 3rd gear mosty till 3500-4000RPM, anything above is the exhaust note which never lets you hear that.
Anything covering your hands is usefull.(plain leather gloves have advantage over cloth)
it'll save your hand from ugly bruises when you'll fall even at crawling speeds.
There wont be any "Tappet noise" in the morning (or when the engine is cold) and it only increases with an increase in the engine temperature.
The tappet noise is something similar to the sound that a coin makes after falling on floor (sort of rhythmic 'tunn.... tunn..' or 'chan... chan....').
The 'gurr.... gurr....' sound is the normal sound that any engine makes 'coz of friction in the moving components of the engine; the amplitude of the sound depending upon the state of the engine and its refinement.
The 'tak...tak...' sound that one hears after the engine is switched off comes from the silencer 'coz of contraction of the metal as a result of cooling; which is absolutely normal.....

i dont know any super techno reason behind it but my bike "milds" down after 10-15kms in the tappet noise department, the noises cant be due to the slack in the cam chain as the engine is also fitted with automatic chain tensioner like in the FIERO.
TBH there's not much of the compression knock noise in the RTR too, the PULSAR's have loads of it

I think your bike is making some other kind of noise in the morning(may be due to some other reason)...Originally posted by rennycornelius View PostThen you got to hear my bike in the morning....

when I start my bike in the morning, the thump sounds very sweet....no extra sound.
But its great, that you are not hearing the tappet noise.....good for you man....
and I asked my mechanic today again,he said Tappet sound comes only when the engine heats up....

Ok, thats the so-called tappet sound. my doubt is, is it a thing to worry about..? I mean, if one begins to hear some tappet noise, is it a bad omen.. ?
is it a thing to be sorted out, or just leave it there..? Any harm to the engine..?

Yes, it comes only when the clearance expands due to increase in engine's temperature.Originally posted by sambit View Post

Damn
The fuel filter is out of stock in Indore.
TVS must do something about the availibility of the parts, the plug is out of stock too and so is the rear tail lamp, RTR180's sprocket kit, parking lamps, and brake fluid.Last edited by rennycornelius; 08-15-2010, 01:56 PM.The Magician"

No harm at all.its absolutly normal....its actually the case of every RTR(cant say about the FI though).
Tappet is loosened for excellent pick-up.

The rear wheel of my RTR wobbles while riding which causes it to handle a little wierd at times. Probably the rear wheel is out. Can this be fixed or do i have to change the wheel?
I have also noticed a "tak tak" coming from the rear left side of the bike whenever i hit a bump or a pothole even at slow speeds. I am unable to identify the sound and even the guys at the service centre havent solved the problem. The tool kit isnt under the seat so that causing a sound isnt possible.
