    Re: Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi

Hello Guys been wanting to be on the forum for sometime now.Pulsar 220 has been discussed in detail out here.I am replacing my dear 12 year old Croma and plan to get this devil after a lot of look around and showroom visits and stuff zeroed down on two Pulsar 220 and Hero Hunk.Though I love this machine more and my basic use is day to day basis city drive how well does this fit in read about some ECU issues vehicle stopping in between and stuff are all those issues resolved.Though the mileage of a bike depends on the user and driving would this machine return a decent 40 kmpl I would we more than happy if the return is this much.Any special things I need to look out/do if I pick this mean machine.Any suggestions and help would be really appreciated and Thanks in advance

    1. Rust ! The bike is almost 6 years old now and i see rust in almost all nuts/pipes and even a bit on the tank outer edges. Is it the same with others ? What should i do. I was thinking of sanding and then painting them over.

    2. Mileage!! The mileage seems to have dropped below 25. Even with the worst of throttle wringing I never managed less than 30kmpl previously. My bike is running a Joel FFE which has changed the characteristics of the bike. The bottom end torque has gone for a toss and the bike misfires a bit. The mid range and the top has become awesome though and it feels very rev happy (The sound is another thing. My office commute feels like an amusement park/street hawk kind of session every day . So much better than the inertness of the CBR)
On the stock exhaust the bike used to feel bogged down after 7k rpm.

    Gentlemen! Solutions/Thoughts please ?
Aao Thakur aao ... Welcome back

    1. I have mild rusting spots at some places on the frame, but nothing serious. My tank is fine, but its only about 3.5 years old. For repainting, ideally you would need to sand down the whole tank and then repaint it.

2 & 3. Get rid of the FFE. Go back to stock, check your plugs for their state of tune. Depending on that you may need to have the bike retuned. Also your plugs may need a change. Keep the FFE for short riding sprees where you want to have a little fun, but for regular riding time will recommend sticking to stock. All the misfiring could be due to poor plug state + out of tune issues.

Fell out of love with the CBR pretty quickly. It was, as many other people have said time to time, uninvolved. A bike which hated motion. The pulsar is unpretty, rickety, not as refined, commuterish and definitely slower - but much more fun on the run. Also, the tiny issue of a 390 (Bajaj willing) or a 650(if i can digest that black "kal muha" fazer look)

Without Joel FFE - around 59k. With Joel FFE - around 3k over 1.5 years.
I'd personally suggest you to overhaul your carb for good, and work on a thorough cleaning or if you have the FI why not try replacing the pump and just general ECU reset. Regarding RUST, that's a given right. I mean ALMOST on any bikes it's a close friend. I'd suggest you to sand them properly and then opt for a good paint job, because painting over them is not such a rewarding idea.

P.S. Why don't you try the Coca-Cola method, but a can of Coke dabble it over the rusted exposed parts, give it a few seconds and sand/wipe them, you're all set. If it works for Russian cars, why not our bikes.

I'd second you wholeheartedly, yes apart from the little stints I've had with a handful of bikes I've had, including the CBR, I just can't get off of the sound, the vibration, the whine the 220 makes. No matter what bikes I ride, (R15 excluded purely for darn riding position) I just want to get back on the 220. But there's something to this machine! Something!

Will give a try with the original exhaust to check if the mileage gets any better. The Joel FFE might be creating some problems, but sure is a lot of fun on the run. People check their rear view mirrors desperately and sometimes give way. Well two riders(wifey as pillion) with oversized funky lids does look odd!

Glad that it stopped here with watch. Can't imagine if it went a little posterior.

    Cheers!
