Any P220 Fi's still running? Mine is lying parked since 2020. Need to see what is the part availability scene especially in Bangalore if anyone is still using these. Surely I will need new injectors and tank among other things to get this started.

Hi all fellow "first batch" 220 DTS-Fi owners.

Wanted to check if anyone in knows any garage or mechanic in Pune that has the Delphi ECU diagnostic tool.

Let me give a bit of background. I had booked my 220-Fi way back in Feb-2007 and my bike got delivered from the first batch in April-2007 (Pune). I have lots of fond memories with the bike like checking with my to-be wife whether I should spend ~90K (a lot in those days); eventually buying it. Going off on trips just after getting married to all the beaches of Maharashtra starting from Alibaug, Murud, Harihareshwar, etc etc.. all the way down south to Ganpatiphule, Malvan, Vengurla and then in Goa till Colva and also Karwar in multiple trips over a span of 2-3 years.

Then we had our baby, bike was retired and an i20 took its place in 2010. Till that time the bike had done ~42K Kms in 3 yrs .. Over the years i20 gave way to a VW Jetta in 2015 (lovely car; done 90K kms all over India; but thats a different story) and bike was seldom used. Still it was working till around 2018 when I just left it at my old house in Aundh and moved to a new place in NIBM. And then Covid hit and over a period of 4.5 yrs of gathering dust, the bike was as good as scrapped.

A week back I don't know what got into me, I just got it washed by my car cleaner, got 2L of petrol and filled it. I had a 12V lithium battery pack (of one of my RC toy car) and I connected that (the old battery was obviously not even worthy of trying a charge), pushed the button and whoooaa.. the fuel pump came to life. And within 10 sec there was petrol all over the place .. basically the rubber running from the fuel pump to the filter had all gone brittle and burst due to the pressure.

Not to loose heart, I got a couple of spare pipes (and 200 NS fuel filter) and just did a quick replacement; primed it again and all good, pressed the starter button and my God the bike just came to life in one go... Maybe I am lucky but man this machine is good. really good..

I rode around and it seem to work great. So got it serviced, (there were no brakes as the DOT4 fluid had become gel).

After spending just a few Ks (2.5 to be precise), everything is in perfect working condition, all electrical, gear shift even engine power and that crisp throttle response. I was confident enough riding it and could easily do 90-100km/h.

    BUT

I see the tuning has gone a bit off and there is some error in the ECU (check engine light comes ON after 3-4 mins and stays on). The bike still runs great, albeit it feels hotter than what I was remember being accustomed to. I took it to all the known Bajaj service centres to me in Pune (Sai Kothrud, Ishnya Shivajinagar etc). No one seem to have the diagnostic tool for this 2007 model and therefore no one can tell why the engine light is ON.

I got so excited (call it nostalgia) that I even applied for registration extension (15 yrs expiring on 17-April-2022), paid green tax etc.. It will be great if someone can just adjust the CO (make it a bit rich) so it doesn't overheat and also not stall (sometimes) when I close the throttle while rolling.

Any help or pointer to where I can take it in Pune will be of immense help ..

I don't mind shipping the bike or even trying to get it started once and ride non-stop to Bangalore for service at a place which still works on 220FI's, but people/mechanics have increasingly started saying that even all that effort may not result in a very reliable motorcycle, hence thinking of giving up and getting Carb-conversion done.
Carb conversion is the more practical thing to do, but for people who in today's day and age still have the OG 220 Fi, practicality isnt a word in their life ;-)

I don't know if it is worth exploring and seeing the possibility of porting over the Fi of the current gen 220, but that maybe too expensive a cost as it might involve having to get the complete wiring harness and sensors and what not.

I saw it later, loved Rajiv Bajaj's speech and the journey of the Pulsar brand. It brought so much nostalgia for me from riding a borrowed first gen P180 in college to owning my 220!

After that if you still have the stalling issue there could be a million other possibilities from the fuel pump to even the electronic components like if the RR unit is fine, etc. But a good starting point is to check the state of tune (read the plugs), and then have the idling + CO setup done along with a check of the fuel & air filters to ensure there is nothing else contributing to this behavior.

But the question of whether this whole thing is worth it or not is a very personal choice

PS: I think, dropping Bajaj an email to see if they would be ready to sell the diagnostic tool to an individual would be an option worth exploring as well.
Thanks Praful, as always, for providing helpful responses (since 2007 at least on this thread)!

Let's see, covid hasn't made things easy, need to double think every visit to a garage :-/

    Hi All,

I recently had the engine reworked and needed to replace the fuel pump on my old old 220 (2007 fi). The mechanic (non Bajaj, as Bajaj SS folks were unable to help) had said in advance that it would better to convert to a carb setup due to the lack of service/spares support for the FI system. Not wanting to lose the Fi, I insisted and still went with it.

It worked well for a bit (note that I didn't ride as much due to the Covid situation), but has started having problems keeping the engine running at idle or when just rolling the bike with the throttle closed. The bike basically stalls unless there is at least some throttle input.

I know it's probably been discussed on this forum a million times, but should i finally give up and go for a carb setup. I don't use the bike often now but I still would like to be able to just step out for ride not fearing when the engine might stop running.

The other option would be to find a experienced 220Fi mechanic in another city(I'm in Hyderabad these days, so maybe one in Pune/Bangalore) and get the bike to him to see if it can be fixed, but I'm not sure if it's worth it at this point.

Any help/tips would be really welcome.

Its drivable now. Few things still need work. Completed a 12h journey on it, driving mostly at around 5k rpm. Covered 615km with 12l of fuel. Now I'm hearing this noise from the engine on idle which wasn't there before. It goes away when the engine warms up. What could it be? How much would it cost to fix it?

The magnet to the contactless switch of the starter button has rusted away.
if you are unable to get the original RH switchgear, do try the one from SWISS (part #SAP-0544CA) http://www.swissautoonline.com/plist.pdf

No, new BS6 220 right switchgear is fully different. BS4 220 switchgear would work but not a direct plug and play, Bajaj did change the connector post 2011 bikes, so you might have to manually cut, splice and rewire accordingly.

Only good thing is Bajaj still uses standard wiring color codes which is unchanged, so it'll be easy.
