Fine dust was stuck between folds of viscous filter, it was not coming/falling out on gentle taps. Apparently that dirt had soaked up/out some viscous material through the membrane. So, I used a 20mm paint brush to reach between the folds and managed to gently nudge about a teaspoonful of that dirt.
I was surprised & contented then; not now though.
Have I done any serious harm to that filter?
So basically you gently scraped of the surface dirt with a paint brush right? It yes then I think it should be ok as long as you have not damaged the upper layer of the filter (possible if you have used a hard bristle brush). I will say that replace the filter anyway at around 10-12000 kms.
A simple paper type air filter can be cleaned with compressed air blown from the inside out.
However Dazzler's air filter is a VISCOUS PAPER TYPE AIR FILTER.
While the outer layer are dry paper to filter large sized dust particles, the inner layer is an oil covered layer which traps finer dust particles leading to better filtration and longer life. Even in dusty conditions this type of air filter can survive easily for 10k kms.
What the service centre people are saying is 100% correct and it is definitely NOT OK to clean a viscous paper air filter with compressed air.
Unless you are 100% sure of your facts please do not spread misinformation on this thread. The fact that Dazzler's air filter is not to be cleaned by compressed air is CLEARLY WRITTEN IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. Further there is a sitcker stuck right next to the air filter under your seat which says the exact same thing WITH A DIAGRAM to make it clear.
For more information please see my DIY thread on the same from my signature. Not only does it have the procedure to replace the filter, it also has pictures of the relevant pages from the manual as well as a pic of the sticker.
p.s. : Do not take this personally - the ALL CAPS are only for emphasis, I am not shouting or anything here. I felt the need to emphasise because not only are you spreading misinformation, you are defending it. I just want to say that the Honda engineers who designed this filter did a little bit more research than you did when they decided to fix this air filter in dazzler and not sponge/mesh/sry paper type.
I do hope you will take this constructively and have a look at the link in my signature.
Peace.
Thanks for the info. I could not judge clearly whether Honda Dazzler has Viscous type or Paper type Air Filter from the post mentioned by fellow xBhpian.
My bad i confused Viscous as Paper type Air Filter.
What exactly did you open? Sorry I did not clearly understand you.
EDIT: It's Honda Dio (102cc) 2011 make.

Despite reading this in owner's manual & from warning stickers, I couldn't curb my curiosity about viscous air-filters. I opened Dio's filter cover, after dusting I got a teaspoon full of boost like powder. So, how much viscous material did I take out?

Air Filter cleaning is recommended with help of compressed air in every servicing, this will not let the dust settle in the Air Filter. If you don't clean it, the filter might clog up and bike's performance will be affected.
Mate, these can't be 'cleaned' like new. But it is recommended to clean the loose dust with pressurized air. This will allow it to run for the given range. If this isn't done, the air filter will clog the flow as low as 4k kms in dusty places. This is what @Devil is trying to say.

Try cleaning the Air Filter in your every service and you will not need to change it till 10k kms. Viscous Air Filters are the one that can be cleaned without any hassles and easily.
Cheerz!!
There is a difference between normal dry type paper filter & viscous filter. If a viscous filter is cleaned by compressed air, the viscous oil in it may dry up. It's that oil which traps the dust & does the job of air filtering.
A dried viscous filter is of no use. So its written in manual that this filter should not be cleaned but only replace with a new one at specific intervals.
Has the SVC told you that, Viscous Air Filters cannot be cleaned?? If so, they are taking you for a ride. Viscous type Air Filters are the easiest and hassle free when it comes to cleaning.
Cheerz!!
Yes, SVC has told me that these filters cannot be cleaned and only be replaced as per the manual.as they say that its a paper type filter which may get cut while cleaning hence is not recommended.
Paper type/viscous air filters can't be cleaned and it has to be replaced i myself have a dazzler and i change is every 7k kms as its not possible to clean.

Paper type Air-Filters are often cleaned inside-out(reverse flow) using a jet compressed air. It's said, trying to clean a viscous type only makes it worse. Recently, I cleaned (removed accumulated dirt) Dio's viscous air-filter; response is better though.

Air filter in Dazzler is viscous type air filter i,e (paper type) which can't be cleaned and only replaced its like use and throw, as per the manual it has be replaced every 10k kms. As i stay in bangalore where the dust is more so i replace it every 7k to be on the safer side.
Hope this helps.....
